1 Claim. (01. 153- 1) This invention relates to improvements in presses for clamping handbag body materials to handbag jaws, particularly that type of press disclosed in my co-pending application, filed March 20, 1950, Serial Number 150,653.
The principal object of the invention is generally to improve such presses in a manner to facilitate their utilization in the manufacture of handbags.
Another object of the invention is to provide improved operating means for such presses whereby the same are operable with a minimum of effort in a minimum amount of time.
Still another object of the invention is to construct the press so as to provide for the operators safety to the fullest extent.
A further object of the invention is to construct the press so that the same has a novel mode of operation particularly adapted to the manufacture of handbags.
A still further object of the invention is to construct the press so that the same is adapted to rapid readjustment for various types of handbag frames.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a general side elevation of the device with certain parts broken away to compress the figure.

Referring to Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, '7 and 8, the device of the invention includes a cast head member 15 which is configured to provide a sloping front, a recess l 6, a rear extension I1 and mounting pads [8 by which the same is secured atop a suitable table l9.
Secured on the sloping front face of they casting 1 5,, by means of Allen ,head cap screwsor the 2 like, is a cover plate 20 provided with a laterally extending step 2| at its lower edge, see Figs. 1, 2, 9 and 11. Secured on'said step by a single Allen head. cap screw 22 is a male die member 23 which, as best shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, extends laterally beyond said cover plate in either direction. As shown, the sloping face of casting I5 is provided with an edging boss 25 at either side thereof; and it is to this boss that the cover plate 211 is secured.
Mounted on steps 25 cut in the bosses 24, unclerneath the cover plate 20, is a slide 26, see Figs. 5, 6 and 10. As best shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the said slide projects downward and forward beyond the lower ends of the bosses 2 3 and the cover plate 20. Near its lower end the slide 26 is provided with a lateral groove 21 in which is secured by an Allen head cap screw an extrusion of a female die member 28. Referring to Figs. 1, 7, 8 and 10, it will be seen that the female die member 28 is provided with a concavely formed face 50 for cooperation with the male die member 23. The female die member 28 is, best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, considerably shorter laterally than is the male die member. The reason for this will become apparent hereinafter.
In order that the slide 26 may be moved upwardlyand rearwardly between the cover plate 25 and the steps 25 to effect the cooperation of the male andfemale dies, said slide is provided with an aperture 3|, see Figs. '7, 8 and 10. Provided to fit in said aperture 3| is the forward arm32 of an actuating lever 33 pivoted as at 35 in the casting I5, It will be seen that a clockwise movement of said actuating lever 33 will, through the engagement of the arm 32 thereof with aperture 3! move the slide 26 upward and rearward and effect the cooperation between the said male and female dies. However, as it is desired that the slide 26 normally be retained 'in its lower inefiective position, a coil spring 35 engages in a well 36 in the upper edge of the slide and tensions the same downward and forward, see Figs. 7, 8 and 10. I
The other end of spring 35 is mounted on a short post 31, see alsoFigs. 5 and 6, which projects from a lower extension38 of a plate 40 which extends across theupper portion of the recess iii and is secured by bolts 4! to the casting l5. The lower extension 38 of said plate projects downward into the saidrecess, so that the post 571 is located as low as possible. As shown, the spring .35 does not. extend in a straight line from the post 31 to the well 35 but rather in an arcuate line. 'The effect of the spring 35 remains the same however.
In order to cover the spring 35 and protectit from damage the means shown in Figs. 1, 2 3 and'12 is provided. Such means comprises ,a cast cover member 43.,having a pair of .feet 44 which are secured atop the bosses 24 by suitable 3 bolts, and a cover plate 45 which extends down- W r sad altars into temperament-isms with the cover plate fil herein'above described. At its lower end the cover plate 45 rests atop suitable extrusions 46 of the bosses 24. Cover member 43 also is provided: with an-.;extension plate 6.8 which engages between'ears dfl of the casting l5 and covers the upper end of the recess 16.
