prevent the slider from running or being forced. off the rows of fastener elements, slider-arresting end stops, usually in the form of staples, are applied at the ends of the fastener. The conventional end stop applying machine, sometimes referred to as a press, comprises a frame, an anvil on which the previously assembled slide fastener is positioned to receive the staplelike end stop, and a swinging (or reciprocating) head functioning to transfer the end stop from a hopper and also as a hammer for driving the end sto through the tapes of the fastener positioned on the anvil. The anvil is usually carried by a stationary arm integrally connected to the frame and is preferably interchangeably mounted at the end of said arm in alignment with the hammer end of the head.
Heretofore, the operations of assembling the slider on the fastener stringers and of applying the end stops to the assembled fastener have been separately and independently performed. For example, the two fastener stringers were drawn through'the slider channel to effect engagement of the fastener elements thereof for a desired length of fastener by one worker, and thereupon the assembled fastener was supplied to the end stop applying machine, usually operated by another worker, who proceeded to position the assembled slider on the anvil and thereupon to put the machine into operation.
It is a principal object of this invention to simplify the manufacture of slide fasteners, and particularly the aforesaid operations of assembling the slide fastener parts and of applying the bottom end stop to the assembled slide fastener, through the provision of an attachment for the end stop applying machine which allows both said operations to be performed in the same machine in immediate succession and by the same operator.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an attachement for an end stop applying machine enabling the assembly of the slide fastener parts in a simple, convenient operation and which further presents the end of the assembled fastener which is to receive the end stop to the anvil in proper position to receive the same.
Yet another object of the invention is the provision of an attachment for an end stop applying machine by which the slider is secured in a convenient position such that the fastener stringers may be assembled therewith and the fastener elements thereof engaged for a desired length of the fastener, and so that the end of the fastener which is to receive the end stop is presented directly to the anvil.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of an end stop applying machine and associated mechanism which permits the operations of assembling the slide fastener parts and of applying the end stop to the assembled fastener to be performed on the same machine,
and without the requirement of the previous time-consuming and skill-requiring separate operations heretofore necessary to achieve such operations.
A more detailed object of the invention is the provision of an attachment for end stop applying machines incorporating means carried by the anvil or anvil carrying arm of the machine frame for facilitating assembly of the slide fastener parts and which is so positioned as to present a length of closed fastener to the anvil, in conjunction with means on the anvil functioning as an abutment engageable by the end of the closed fastener and which thereby locates said fastener end in proper position on the anvil to receive the end stop.
A further specific object of the invention is the provision of an attachment for an end stop applying machine as aforesaid incorporating slider clamping means for fixedly securing the slider in position such that the fastener stringers may be drawn therethrough in the direction of the anvil and their fastener elements engaged, thereby to close the end of the fastener which is to receive the end stop, in conjunction with means for quickly releasing the clamped slider upon application of the end stop. The above and other objects and features of the advantage of the invention will be seen from the following detailed description, taken with the accompanying drawings illustrating preferred forms of an attachment functioning as aforesaid, wherein, Y

As seen in Figs. 1 and 3, the clamping member is fixed to the frame It, whereas clamping member 28 is mounted for limited turning movement about its mounting pivot 21, and the jaw end of the latter clamping member is springactuated towards the related jaw end of the fixed clamping member by a spring 23 reactive between the outer ends of said members. By further reference to Figs. 1 and 5, it will be seen that the jaw faces of the clamping members are shaped to provide both a slot 29 and a recess 30-for re '4 ceiving the pull tab 3! and attaching ball 32 of a fastener slider 33, and that the upper end faces of the clamping jaws are disposed in the horizontal plane of the top face of the anvil 15, thus to provide a positioning or rest surface for the slider body. Accordingly, the clamping members 25, 26 are effective not only to space the slider 33 horizontally from the anvil [5, but also to secure, through the medium of its pull tab, the slider 33 in such manner that the slider body is supported on the upper end faces of the clamping members and generally in the plane of the top or working face of said anvil i5, and also with the lower end of the slider, through which the interlocked fastener elements emerge, facing the anvil. Thus, the slider is conveniently mounted so that the fastener stringers 3 35 (Fig. 6) may be readily inserted through the divergent channel branches of the slider and drawn through the slider channel in the direction of the anvil, thus to present a length of closed fastener to said anvil. The closed length of fastener is determined by the spacing of clamping members 25, 26 from anvil, which is so chosen that the fastener is closed for a length of say ten or twelve opposed fastener elements 36, 37. and hence is adequately assembled.
As seen in Fig. 5, the anvil is provided on its top face with an upwardly pointing projection shaped as a thorn or pin 33, which serves as an abutment against which the endmost engaged fastener element bears as the assembled length of fastener is drawn towards same by the machine operator. The placement of the thorn 38 is such i that when said endmost fastener element abuts same, the fastener is suitably positioned to receive the staple-like end stop 36 from the swinging head i l moving against the anvil, which upon impacting the latter causes the end stop to penetrate the fastener tapes as, 35 and to be firmly clinched thereto, as is well known.
The attachment aforesaid also incorporates means for efiecting quick release of the clamped slider, and to this end the frame it mounts a cam 42 actuatable by a handle as, the cam being shown to have part-circular section and a flat chord-like face 42a cooperatively related to an offset horizontal-surface it formed on the movable clamping member 26. In the normal position of handle '23, the cam 42 is inactive, thus permitting the spring 28 to maintain the clamping jaws closed. However, upon handle t3 being swung in upward (counterclockwise) direction, cam 32 engages on the offset surface #34 of the clamping member 2%, thereby actuating it to its release position illustrated in Fig 3.
With the attachment secured inwardly of the anvil I5, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 5, it will be understood that the operation of assembling the slide fastener parts requires simply that the stringers be drawn through the slider in relatively outward direction, that is to say, towards the operator standing forwardly of the anvil. However, assembly in the opposite direction may be more desirable or convenient to the operator, in which case the anvil and attachment secured thereto are turned 180 to the alternate position,
in which the attachment is disposed forwardly of the anvil, shown in Figs. 7 and 8. According to this latter positioning, an operator standing forwardly of the attachment pulls the assembled fastener away from himself, i. e. towards the anvil, with the thorn 38 functioning as an abutment for the endmost fastener element. and thus end stop st.
. Referring to Figs. 9, 10 and 11 illustrating a modified form of attachment functioning similarly to that previously described, the attachment frame it may take the form of a substantially -shaped body member, whose lower arm is extended and shaped as a sleeve adapted to be shifted over and secured to the anvil [5. The upper arm of the frame is provided at its end with an under surface which is horizontal and disposed substantially in the horizontal plane of the top surface of the anvil I5, and with a vertically disposed slot-like opening 52 of horizontal section corresponding generally to that of the pull tab 53 of a slider 54 which is adapted to be inserted into the slot from the lower end thereof, whereupon the slider may be positioned as shown in Fig. 11. When so received in the slot 52, the pull tab is adapted to be clamped by means of a clamping plunger comprising a stem 56 operating in a bore 5'! extending horizontally through the upper frame arm and communicating with the slot 52, and a head 58 operating in a counterbore also containing a spring 59 reactive against the underface of the head and thereby normally urging the plunger to its release position as shown in Fig. 9. However, the clamping plunger is normally maintained in clamping position by means of a vertically disposed actuating plunger operating in a bore, Ell provided in the vertical arm of the frame 58 and communicating with the aforesaid bore 5?. Said actuating plunger comprises a large diameter head 6! at its upper end, an intermediate stem portion 52, and a lower largediameter head 63, the upper head 6! being connected to the intermediate stem portion by a conical portion 64. The lower head 63 operates in a counterbore also containing a spring 55 reacting thereagainst and normally urging the actuating plunger downwardly into engagement with an eccentric cam 66 actuable by a handle 6?. With the handle in its vertical dependent position seen in Fig. 11, cam 66 is inactive and the upper plunger head 6! engages against the head 58 of the clamping plunger, thus forcing the latter outwardly, or to the right as shown in Fig. ll. Accordingly, the stem 55 of the clamping plunger is positively actuated against the pull tab 53 inserted in the slot 52 and thereby firmly secures the slider lid in the plane of the top face of the anvil i5, and in position such that the fastener stringers may be threaded into the slider and drawn towards the anvil, thereby to present a length of closed fastener thereto as previously described. slider, handle 61 is swung upwardly in counterclockwise direction, whereupon cam 55 effects raising movement of the actuating plunger against the force of spring $5 for a limited amount such that the conical portion t4 thereof comes into line with the head 58 of the clamping plunger, which latter is now free to move inwardly under the force of spring 59 toa retracted position releasing the slider pull tab 53.
As with the prior described form of attachment, the attachment illustrated in Figs. 9-11 together with the anvil [5 may be turned to the alternate position shown in Fig. 12, in which the attachment is disposed forwardly of the anvil, thus permitting the machine operator to assemble the slide fastener parts by drawing the stringers away from himself, if such is more convenient to him.

6 have been illustrated and described'as separate from the "anvil 55, said frames may be formed integral therewith, in which case the anvil forms an elementof the-attachment. i Without further analysis, it will be appreciated that an attachment according to both of the illustrated forms achieves the aforementioned objects of the invention in simple yet exceedingly As distinguished from the prior procedures involving assembly of the slide fastener in an operation physically separate and removed from that of applying the end stop, the attachment of the present invention permits the slide fastener parts to be assembled in the same machine employed to apply the end stop and in an operation which not only immediately precedes that of applyingthe end stop, but also one that presents the end of the assembled slider that is to receive the end stop to the head and anvil of the stop applying machine, thus greatly simplifying both of they involved operations. It will also be, observed that the slider clamping means incorporated in both forms of the illustrated attachment permits the slider to be clamped and released in exceedingly simple manner and with a minimum of time and effort, which is of advantage in facilitating and speeding up the aforesaid operations.
As many changes could be made in carrying out the above constructions without departing from the scope of the inventionJt is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. An attachment for a fastener end-stop applying machine including an anvil having a horizontal working face, said attachment comprising the combination of a frame member incorporating means at one end thereof for detachably securing the frame member to the anvil, slider securing means operatively associated with the frame member and being spaced horizontally from said securing means comprising means defining a vertically disposed slot for the pull tab of a slider and a horizontal positioning surface for the slidebody which is disposed substantially in the horizontal plane of the working face of the anvil and means normally operative to clamp the pull tab received in said slot, manual means for rendering said clamping means inactive, and an abutment on the working face of the anvil for the endmost fastener element of a pair of fastener stringers assembled with the slider and extending between said slider and anvil.

An attachment for a fastener end-stop applying machine including an anvil having a horizontal working face, said attachment comprising the combination of a frame member incorporating means at one end thereof for detachably securing the frame member to the anvil, slider securing means operatively associated with the frame member comprising a pair of substantially vertically disposed clamping jaws which are horizontally spaced from said securing means and are mounted in said frame member for relative approach and separating motion, the clamping face of at least one of said clamping jaws being recessed to provide a vertically disposed slot for the pull tab of a slider, the upper end faces of said jaws being disposed substantially in the horizontal plane of the working face of the anvil and providing a positioning surface for the slider body, and spring means operative normally to araeaors actuate said clamping jaws relatively towards one another, manual means for imparting relative separating motion to said clamping jaws, and an abutment on the working face of the anvil for the endmost fastener element .of a pair of fastener stringers assembled with the slider and extending between said slider and anvil.
3. An attachment for a fastener end-stop applying machine including an anvil having a horizontal working face, said attachment comprising the combination of a 'C-shaped frame member whos lower arm is provided with means at its end portion for detachably securing the frame to the anvil and whose upper arm is spaced horizontally from said securing means and is provided with a vertically disposed slot-like opening for the pull tab of a slider and a horizontal positioning surface for the slider body which is disposed substantially in the horizontal plane of the working face of the anvil, means operative in said upper arm for normally clamping the pull tab received in said slot-like opening, manual means for actuatin said clamping means to an inactive position, and an abutment on the working face of the anvil for the endmost fastener element of a pair of fastener stringers assembled with the slider and extending between said slider and anvil.
4. An attachment for a fastener end-stop applying machine including an anvil having a horiaontal working face, said attachment comprising a frame member having means at one end thereof for detachably securing the frame to the anvil, slider securing means operatively asociated with the frame member and being horizontally spaced from said securing means comprising means defining a vertically disposed slot for the pull tab of a slider and a horizontal positioning surface for the slider body disposed substantially in the horizontal plane of the working face of the anvil and means normally operative to clamp the pull tab received in said slot, and manual means for rendering said clamping means inactive.
'5. An attachment for a fastener end-stop applying machine including an anvil having a horizontal working face, said attachment comprising a frame member having means at one end thereof for detachably securing the frame member to the anvil, slider securing means operatively associated with the frame member and being horizontally spaced from said securing means and comprising a pair of substantially vertically disposed clamping jaws mounted in said frame member for relative approach and separating motion, the clamping face of at least one of said clamping jaws being recessed to provide a vertically disposed slot for the pull tab of a slider and the upper faces of the jaws being disposed substantially in the horizontal plane of the working face of the anvil, and spring means operative normally to actuate said clamping jaws relatively towards one another, and manual means for imparting relative separating motion to said clamping jaws.
6. An attachment for a fastener end-stop applying machine including an anvil-having a horizontal working face, said attachment comprising a (l-shaped frame member whose lower arm provided at its end with 'means for securing the frame member 'to the anvil and whose upper arm is spaced horizontally from said securing means and is provided with a vertically disposed slotlilze opening for the pull tab of a slider and a horizontal positioning surface for the slider body disposed and substantially in a horizontal plane of the working face of the anvil, means operative in said upper arm for normally clamping the pull tab received in said slot-like opening, and man-- ual means for actuating said clamping means to an inactive position.

An attachment for a fastener end-stop applying machine including an anvil having a hori zontal working face, said attachment comprising the combination of a. frame member having means at one end thereof for detachably securing the frame member to the anvil and incorporating means having a horizontal positioning surfa e for a. slider body which is spaced horizontally from said securing means and is disposed substantially in the horizontal plane of the avcrlling face of the anvil, said last means being provided with a vertically disposed slot opening through said positioning surface for receiving the pull tab of the and an abutment on the 'WOl..'-- face of the'anvil for the endmost fastener element of a pair of fastener stringers assembled with the slider and extending between slider and anvil.
