COMB WITH SELF-CONTAINED CURLING DEVICE Walter Raphael, New York, N. Y., assigner to General Patent Production Company, New York County, N. Y., a rm Application June 12, 1952, Serial No. 293,062
(Cl. 132-l1) 1 Claim.' l
This invention relates to a comb with a selfcontained hair curling device of the type used by women.
It is well known that curly or wavy hair is greatly desired by womankind but unfortunately nature does not bestow this type of hair upon all womankind. The permanent Wave or the home hair curler is therefore required by most women.
Unfortunately, however, curling devices which are presently upon the market are bulky and cumbersome.
It is an object of this invention to provide a curling device which may be used in connection with a comb and which will disappear within said comb when not required.
It is a further object of this invention to provde a curling device which will retract into the body of a comb automatically.
Brieily stated the invention -comprises a comb with a hollow handle member and a plurality of spaced teeth depending from the handle member. In the preferred modification of this invention a horizontal slot is provided in the top porti-on of the handle member. A curling device, which is preferably a pointed rod member is disposed within the hollow handle member and an additional handle member is secured to the hollow handle member and extends through said slot. A spring member is disposed about the pointed rod member, one end of the spring being secured to the handle member and the other end to the additional handle member. In addition it is preferable to provide an additional slot in the iront portion of the handle member communicating with the slot in the top portion of the handle member so that the rod member may be held in extended position when desired.
The invention will be further described by reference to the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this specication.
Fig. 1 is a front view, partly in section, showing the comb with a self-contained hair curling device made in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a front view, partly in section, showing a portion of the invention when the hair curling device is in extended position.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the invention showing the means that may be provided to temporarily secure the hair curling device in extended position.
Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the invention taken along line d--li of Fig. l.
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the invention taken along line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
There is provided comb II which is formed of handle member l2 and spaced teeth portions I3. Handle I2 is hollow having hole I4 disposed therein. Handle I2 is also provided with slot I5 communicating with hole I4 in the top portion thereof.
The curling device used in this invention is a rod member IS bearing point I'l at the front end thereof. Additional handle I8 is secured to rod member I6 and is disposed within slot I5. Holding member I9 is secured to handle I8 so as to prevent disassembly of the device.
Spring 2t is disposed about rod member I5 and is made of wide coils. One end 2| of spring 2i) is secured to handle I8 while the other end 22 of spring 20 is secured to the interior of handle i2.
With the description of this invention given the operation of the device may now be set forth.
When it is desired to use the device as a comb only rod member I6 is in retracted position within handle I2 and is held in such position by the action of spring 2t. When it is desired to use the curling device however handle I8 is grasped and drawn along slot I5 to the end thereof. This movement, however, is performed under tension sin-ce spring 2|) is compressed.
When the curling device, i. e. rod member I6, is fully extended handle I8 is turned toward the front portion of the comb. It is pointed out that rod member I6 is capable of being turned within handle member I2.
When handle I8 is turned toward the front portion of the comb it is disposed in slot 23 which is connected to slot I5. Handle I8 is then let go and is then driven back into oset portion 24 by the action of spring 2G. However since offset portion 24 extends only a short distance rearwardly handle I8 is firmly held in place and rod member It is held in extended position.
When it is desired to retract rod member It when the curling device is no longer used handle I8 is turned toward the top portion of handle I2 with a short push forward to re-engage the front portion of slot 23. Handle i8 is then let go and spring 2li pushes rod member Iii into handle I 2.
The foregoing specic embodiments of this invention as shown in the foregoing specification are for illustrative purposes and for purposes of example only. Various changes and modifcations of this invention can obviously be made within its spirit and scope and will occur to those skilled in this art.
I claim:
A comb Ivcomprising a hollow Eharzai-le Lmember, a plurality of s'p'aoedteeth dependingr froin-said handle member, said handle member being provided with a horizontal slot in the upper portion thereof communicating with the hollow portion of said handle member; an "eiitensibleipoi'ted rod member adapted to be used as a curling device disposed Within said handle member, an
additional handle member Aseoureizl `fto said r'o'd i member disposed within said slot, a spring meme ber disposed about said rod member, one engi of said spring member being secured to said additional handle member, the other end of Zsaid spring member being seeured to said first-named 20 whenfsaiilro member-isdn exteniedlposition.
