It is an important object of the present invention to provide an improved unitary sheet designed primarily for beds of day-bed type which are of lesser width than the usual single bed. Individual sheets are usually employed for these narrow beds but such sheets are considerably wider than the 24 to 28 inch width of the more compact beds which are also used for sitting purposes. When, however, a sheet of the width used for a full double bed is used for a narrow bed and the sheet is folded along its longitudinal median line to form upper and lower sheet sections, dificulty is experienced in making-up the bed by folding down the head section of the upper section.

In accordance with the present invention the unitary sheet may initially be of the same size and shape of the usual double bed sheet and there is formed at its upper end a cut-out section of limited length and lying on both sides of the longitudinal median line. Thus when the sheet is folded along this line and the fold line is positioned at the back of the bed, slightly below the top surface, the unitary sheet has all of the appearance of a neatly arranged pair of single sheets of considerably narrower width than usual single sheets.

The blankets may then be arranged on top of the layer of sheets and the upper or head section, together with the blankets, folded downwardly in the usual manner.

The unitary double sheet of the present invention effects a considerable saving in material as well as in laundering charges while still providing an upper and lower sheet of adequate width for narrow beds. It is particularly useful in hospitals, where narrow beds are frequently used, since it reduces the time in making up the bed because of the fact that the upper and lower sections are automatically placed in register.

Most convertible beds or two-purpose couches are of a width no greater than to make it comfortable for sitting purposes and for the purpose of the present invention a sheet of the size of a standard doublebed sheet may be used.

It is first folded along its longitudinal median line El and a section then cut out which may be eight inches or thereabouts in width extending inwardly of median line II and of a length equal generally to the width of the usual pillow. The longitudinal edges I2 and the transverse edge l3 of the cut-out section may then be finished as by hemming or facing (not shown) and the sheet is ready for use.

In use, the sheet may first be folded along line I I to form upper sheet section [4 and a lower sheet section 15 and the folded edge draped down over the, back ed e of the mattress It as shown at H. The opposite longitudinal edges l8 of the sheet are in substantial alignment. Depending upon the respective widths of both bed and sheet, these edges l8 may drape over the front edge l9 of the mattress or they may coincide generally with the front edge of the mattress as shown.

When the sheet is to be used it is draped over the mattress as shown in Fig. 1, and the head portion 22 of the upper'sheet section is folded downwardly, either before or after the blankes are placed on the bed.

In the modified form of the invention shown in Fig. 5 the upper section 24 and the lower section 25 are defined by longitudinal fold line 26 and the cut-out section is disposed in the upper sheet section only, one longitudinal edge 21 thereof being aligned with such fold line and the other edge 28 being spaced inwardly thereof. These edges are connected by a transverse edge 29.

These edges may then be finished in any suitable fashion such as by facing or hemming. In this arrangement edge 21 will usually be tucked downwardly at the rear of the mattress and edge 28 will lie along the upper rear edge thereof.

In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 6 the sheet sections 3| and 32 are connected by the longitudinal fold line 33 but in this instance no material is removed. The sheet is simply out along such fold line as shown at 34 and the only space between the opposed edges is that resulting from finishing the edges.

Applicant is not limiting the invention to a bed sheet for a narrow bed of the kind described but on the contrary it may be embodied in sheets for full-sized single beds and also for double beds.

While three forms or embodiments of the invention have been shown and described herein for illustrative purposes, and the construction and arrangement incidental to three specific applications thereof have been disclosed and discussed in detail, it is to be understood that the invention is limited neither to the mere details or relative arrangement of parts, nor to its specific embodiments shown herein, but that extensive deviations from the illustrated form or embodiment of the inventionmay be made without departing from the principles thereof.

I claim:

1. A unitary sheet forming upper and lower sheet sections for relatively. narrow beds and formed from a generally rectangular blank folded along its longitudinal median line and having a cut-out portion at one end of the sheet in the area through which said median line passes and extending longitudinally for a distance less than the Width of either section.

2. A unitary sheet forming upper and lower sheet sections for relatively narrow beds and formed from a generally rectangular blank folded along its longitudial median line and having a cut-out portion at one end of the sheet in the area through which said median line passes and extending longitudinally of the sheet for a distance less than the width of the section, the width of said cut-out portion being less than its length. i

3. A unitary bed sheet which when folded along a longitudinal median line, forms upper and lower sheet sections and formed from a generally retangular blank, such blank having, at one end thereof in the area of said median line, a cutout section extending longitudinally from such end a minor proportion of the length of said sheet and being of a width less than its length.
