Patented Apr. 21, 1953 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to fence construction, and more particularly to an improved reinforced concrete fence post for supporting and securing the elements of a wire fence.
The main object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved concrete post which is simple in construction, which is easy to set up, and which is arranged to firmly secure and support the elements of a wire fence at any desired height on the post.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved cement fence post which is inexpensive to manufacture, which is sturdy in construction, and which is substantially weatherproof.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claim, and from the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of a plurality of improved fence posts according to the present invention, shown arranged in operative position and shown clampingly supporting the wires of a fence.
Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevational view of one of the fence posts of Figure 1 and showing the fence wires clamped adjacent the lower end of the fence post.
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 6 3 of Figure 2'.
Figure 4 is a horizontal cross sectional view taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the top portion of a modified fence construction incorporating the improved fence post of the present invention.
Referring to the drawings, the improved fence post is designated generally at II and comprises an upwardly tapering body of reinforced concrete construction, as shown at IZ, said body hav ing four sides and being integrally formed at its lower portion with the opposed outwardly projecting horizontal anchoring lugs I3, I3. As shown in Figure 1, the body I2 is adapted to be positioned vertically with the lower portion thereof embedded in the ground and with the anchoring lugs I3, I3 located substantially below the surface of the ground, whereby the earth packed around and above the anchoring lugs I3, I3 serves to securely anchor the post in upstanding vertical position.
As shown in Figures 2 and 3, the reinforcements in the post may constitute U-shaped rods It on opposite sides of the body I2 disposed in downwardly facing positions and formed near their lower ends with the loops I5 which project outwardly and which define the reinforcing structure for the outwardly projecting anchoring lugs I3, I3.
Embedded in the body I2 are the vertically 6 spaced transversely extending sleeves I6 which extend completely through the body I2 and which are open at their ends. The sleeves i6 are spaced substantially uniformly so that adjacent sleeves may receive the legs of U bolts Il in the manner shown in Figures l, 2 and 3, whereby fence wires I8 may be clampingly engaged by the bight portions of the U bolts, the wires I 8 being clamped against the fence post and being secured by the use of nuts I9 threaded on the legs of the U bolts I'I. As shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3, the fence wires I8 may be clamped to the post at selected heights on the post, as for example in the manner illustrated in Figure 1 where the wires are secured in spaced relation to the top, center and lower portion of the post, or in the manner illustrated in Figures 2 and 3, where the wires are secured to the lower portion of the post.
Referring to Figure 5, the fence post III may also be employed with fence boards 20, the boards 20 being secured to the post by bolts 2| extending through said boards and through the sleeves I6 at a selected point on the post, as shown.
While a specific embodiment of an improved fence post structure has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modications within the spirit of the in vention may occur to those sklled in the art. Therefore, it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention except as defined by the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
In combination, a reinforced concrete fence post of square cross section and tapering upwardly in cross sectional area, said post being adapted t0 be mounted vertically in the ground, a pair of opposed laterally extending, substantially at, rectangular, horizontal anchoring lugs of substantial length and width integrally formed on and projecting from the sides of the fence post adjacent to its bottom end but spaced from said bottom end, a plurality of vertically spaced pairs of coplanar parallel sleeve members arranged in a common vertical plane embedded in said post and extending transversely therethrough, respective U bolts having their legs extending completely through the respective pairs of sleeve members, and respective nuts threaded on the ends of said legs, each U bolt being arranged to straddle a fence wire and to clamp said wire to the fence post in a plane substantially normal to the plane of said anchoring lugs.
