Itis-desired'to produce a jointer having an exceedingly longtable surface as, compared to :g-thOSB presently in use. This requires an over-all table length of, the order of eighty inches, and due to the greater length and theoverhang relative to the supporting standard, the weight must be kept as low as possible and factors causing misalignment of one section of'the table relative to the other, must be coped with, and in addition, thejcost of'the structure must be kept low in view of competitive conditions. j An object is, there- .-fore,- to produce jointers having tablesupporting bed structures; which satisfy these requirements. A major portion of the upper edge of the side plates l and H is flat as indicated in Figure 3 and resting thereon is a longitudinal sheet metal plate l8, which provides a table top for the bed A. The right-hand end of the table thereby extends slightly beyond a cut-out portion I9 and to the outer side of each of the plates l0 and H is welded an arcuate bearing pad to which bearing elements 2| (Figure l) are bolted. At the right-hand end of the bearing pads 20 (Figure 3), the upper edge portions of the side plates incline downwardly as indicated at 22. It is along the edge portions 22 that the adjustable bed rides as will hereinafter appear.
Beneath the table l8 and for reenforcing and supporting the side plates 10 and in upright position are transversely arranged sheet'metal spacer plates 23, 24 and 25, which arewelded in position. Near the left-hand end of the assembly is a flanged plate 26 which is welded to the a side plate flanges 12 .and the side "plates'ior reenforcing purposes. It will be apparent that the left-hand .end (Figure 3) of the bed A is open and insertable therein may be a drawer (notshown), which is suspended from giiideplates 21 depending from the under side of the table l8. v

Closing the outer end of the bed B is a steel.
As shown casting having a vertically disposed, longitudinally slotted plate 42, which extends laterally to one side of the table and carries a table extension 4! on its upper portion. The longitudinal plate 3! abuts against the rear face of the plate 42 to which it is welded and the longitudinal plate 36 overlaps the other end of the'plate 42 andis likewise welded to it. A space is left between the table extension 4| and the table 35 and this space is filled by weld 4 Id, which is subsequently ground and polished to present a flush table top. 'In order rigidly to secure the table 35 to the plate 42, the latter has a longitudinal g-roove42a at its upper portion (Figure 10A) to receive weld 42?). Upper and lower guides 44 and 43 respectively are formed in the outer face of the plate 12 for suitably receiving and guiding the end plate F of the jointer fence F.
It will be apparent that the table 35 extends laterally beyond the longitudinal upright plate 36 and welded to the under side of this'extending portion is aplate45, the loweredge of which-is flanged inwardlyas indicated at. The table '35 has a longitudinally extending'portion to overlap a portion of the table I8 of the fixed or stationary bed A.
The inner portions of each of'the plates 3B and 31 have their edges upwardly and inwardly inclined, as indicated at 48, with an intermediate recessed portion 49, andinterposed between these ftheir'side edge portions to the inner sides of the longitudinal upright plates 36 and 31. Each of 45 the plates has a hole 5l in alignment with the hole in the other plate and integral with the lower edge of'each plate is an extension 52 which 'has'a narrow neck 53, opposite side edges of'which flare divergentlyoutward. As shown in Figure 10, the extensions52of the plates 50 project outwardlybeyond the inclined edge portions of the longitudinal plates.
Interposed between the two plates 50 and weldedthe'reto is a pair of spacer plates 54,-each of which engages the lower edge portion-of each plate and also the subjacent outwardly flared portion of the extension 52, these spacer plates being welded at their ends to the plates 50 and extensions 52 in order rigidly to secure these parts together.
Connecting-each pair of outwardly flared edge portions of the extensions 52 is a sheet metal strip 55, which is welded in place. The strips 55 slidably engage surfaces of the 'gibs 32, on the lower subassembly of the stationary bed A, and
are somewhat longer than the gibs to allow for desired adjusting movement thereon.
The subassembly T comprises a relatively short sheet metal plate 56, which is disposed betweenand welded to the longitudinal plates 36 and '31. This plate similarly has an extension 5'! provided with a reduced neck'5t', the extension "having outwardly flared or divergent edge portions, as shownv on Figure 1.3.
Spaced laterally from the plate 56 is a narrow plate 59 which is similarly welded at itsends to thepinnerzsides of the lOngitudinalplatesSBl and. 31. The plate 59 is inclined outwardly and connecting the inner side of the plate 59 tothe plate ,56 and: extension '51' is a curved spacer plate 60, which. is shaped toconform to theoutwardly flared edge portions of thelextension- Welded to the outer edge portions-of the spacer plate 60 and the extension 51 on eachsideis a relatively narrow strip 6| which, as shown in Figure'lo, is in. alignment withthe adjacent strip.55 of the subassembly T and'accordingly projects outwardly from the inclined edge portion 48. It will be understood that the guide strips SI of the subassembly-T, are longer than the gibs 32 of the uppersubassembly on the :"stationary bed A (Figure 3)- andslidingly engage same for guiding-the verticallyv inclined adjusting movement of thetadjustable bed B relative to the stationary-bed A; I Y
. The mechanism foreifecting adjustment'of the relatively thereto but cannot shift transversely.
At the opposite end of the rod 63 is a bevel gear 64, which is engaged by a bevel gear 65 on one .end of a shaft which has a hand wheel 66 at the outer end. By turning the hand wheel 66, it will be manifestthat the bed B is caused to move .inclinedly upwardly or downwardly relative, to the stationary bed A; After the desired adjustment. has been made through" the operation of the hand wheel 66, L-shaped screws, 61;.w-hich extend from the outside through holesinthe longitudinal plate l0 of the stationary bedA and .into screw-threadedholes 68 (Figure 8) in the adjacent gibs of the upper and lower subassemblies, are tightened for frictionally holding; the parts stationary, a, conventional floating ib (not shown) imposing a binding action against-the strips 55 and ,6] as will be readily understood by those skilled in this art. v The above described jointe frame structure is particularly advantageous in the case of ex-' .ceedingly long tables where the overhang is' subin such cases not been achieved satisfactorily. By the improved sheet metal welded fabrication above described, not only can true and accurate table alignment be secured, but the weight as well as the cost of the structure is materially reduced. In addition, the strength, ruggedness and durability of the frame parts are greatly'increased so thatthe useful life of the machine is noticeably prolonged.
, It is to be understood that numerous changes in details of construction, arrangement and operation may be effected without departing from the spirit of the invention especially as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is: v 1. In a jointer having a stationary table sup! porting bed and an adjustable table supporting bed I on the. stationary bed, the statiouary bed comprising a pair of laterally spaced upright longitudinal sheet metal Plates,,downwar.dly inclined upper edge portions at the innerendsot said plates, a plurality of spaced transverse spacerplates betweenand welded .to the inner sides of said upright plates and disposed atone side of said. inclined {edge portions, a table top welded to the upper edge portions of said upright plates, a subassembly between said upright plates in. the region of said inclined edge portions and welded thereto, said subassembly includinga pair of upright transversely arranged plates. with the advanced plate elevated above the other. plate, extensions projecting upwardlyat the side'edge portions of said last plates, and a gib welded to the corresponding extensions of said plates,,the gibs being inclined corresponding to that of-said inclined edge portions and being arranged adjacentv thereto, and means on said adjustable bed slidably engaging said gibs. i-

gibs being.inclinedcorresponding to that of said inclined edge portions and. being arrangedadjacent thereto, and means on said adjustable bed slidably engaging said gibs.
3. In a jointer having a stationary table supporting bed and an adjustable table supporting bed on the stationary bed, the stationary bed comprising a pair of laterally spaced upright longitudinal sheet metal plates, downwardlyinclined upper edge portions at the inner ends of said plates, a pluralityof spaced transverse spacer plates between and welded to the inner sides of said upright plates and disposed at one sideof said inclined .edge portions, a table top welded to the upper edge portions of said upright plates, a pair of subassemblies between said upright plates in the region of said inclined edge portions and welded thereto, one subassembly being adjacent the upper end of said inclined edge portions and the other adjacent the lower .end thereof, each. subassembly including a, pair of upright transversely arranged plates with the advanced plate elevated above the other plate, extensions projecting upwardly at the side edge portions of said-last plates, and a gib welded to the corresponding extensions of said plates, the gibs being inclined corresponding to that of said inclined edge portions and being arranged adjaoent thereto, the adjustable'table bed comprising a pair of upright laterally spaced longitudinal sheet metal plates, upwardly inclined lower edge portions on the inner end portions 'ofsaid last plates, the inclination thereof correclined-upper. edge portions at the inner ends of said plates, a plurality of spaced transverse spacer plates. between and welded to the inner sides of said upright plates and disposed at :one side fot-isaid inclined edge portions, 9; table top welded to the upper edge portions of saidupright plates, a pair of subassemblies between said upright plates in the "region or. saidinc'linededge :portions and welded thereto, one subassenibly being adjacent the upper end of said inclined edge portions and the other adjacent thelower end thereof, each subassembly including alpair :ofupright transversely arranged plateswith'the advanced plate elevated above the other plate, extensions projecting upwardly at the sideedge portions of said last plates, anda gib welded to :the corresponding extensions of said plates, the gibsibeinginclined corresponding to that of said inclined edge portions and being arranged ad- =jacent thereto, the adjustable table "bed comprising a pair of'uprightlaterally spaced longitudinal sheet metal plates, upwardly inclined lower edgeportions on the inner endportions of said lastplates, the inclination thereof corresponding. to that of said first longitudinal plates a plurality of spaced transverse spacer plates between and welded to the inner sides of said last longitudinal plates, 2. pair of spaced fsubassemblies between said. last longitudinal plates in the region of said inclined edgeportion,

side of said inclined edge portions, a table top welded to the upper edge portions of said upright plates, a pair of subassemblies between said upright plates in the region of said inclined edge portions and welded thereto, one subassembly being adjacent the upper end of said inclined edge portions and the other adjacent the lower end thereof, each subassembly including a pair of upright transversely arranged plates with the advanced plates elevated above the other plate, extensions projecting upwardly at the side edge portions of said last plates, and a gib welded to the corresponding extensions of said plates, the gibs being inclined corresponding to that of said inclined edge portions and being arranged adjacent thereto, the adjustable table bed comprising a pair of upright laterally spaced longitudinal sheet metal plates, upwardly inclined lower edge portions on the inner end portions of said last plates, the inclination thereof corresponding to that of said first longitudinal plates, a plurality of spaced transverse spacer plates between and welded to the inner sides of said last longitudinal plates, a pair of spaced subassemblies between said last longitudinal plates in the region of said inclined edge portion, each subassembly including plate means extending transversely of said last longitudinal plates and welded thereto, extension means on said plate means projecting outwardly beyond said last inclined edge portion, and guide strip means on said extension means slid'ingly engaging said gibs respectively.

In a jointer having a stationary table supporting bed and an adjustable table supporting bed, the stationary bed comprising a pair of laterally spaced upright longitudinal sheet metal 10 plates, horizontally disposed upper edge portions on said plates, downwardly inclined upper edge portions at the inner ends of said plates, brace means connecting intermediate portions of said plates, a table top connected to the upper horizontal edge portions of said'plates, means interposed between said plates in the region of said downwardly inclined edge portions providing sets of laterally spaced parallel gibs, the adjustable bed comprising a pair of laterally spaced,
upright sheet metal plates having upwardly inclined edge portions at the inner ends thereof,
