UNITED STATES KATHARINE S. LATHROP, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
SKIRT-PROTECTING COAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,541, dated August 29, 1882.
Application filed October 8, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KATHARINE STUART LATHRoP, of San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Coat for Ladies, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
The object of my invention is to cover and protect the lower parts of ladies dresses and underskirts.
The invention consists in a ladys coat provided on the inner side with a folding edge along the lower end of the coat, which folding edge is adapted to cover the lower parts of the skirts and dresses to protect them from mud and moisture, this edge being supported by a series of tapes fastened around the waist under the skirts that are to be protected.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. I v
Figure l is a perspective view of the rear of my improved coat for ladies. Fig. 2 is a front perspective view of the same, parts being in section to show the construction. Fig. 3 is an inside view of my improved coat for ladies.
A coat, A, for ladies wear, is made to fit very closely and of such length as to almost reach the ground. The end of the material of which the coat is made is folded up on the inside of the coat to form a folding edge, B, about twelve to fifteen inches deep, and extending around the lower edge of the coat on the inside. A series of loops or eyes, C, are attached to the folding edge B. A series of ribbons, bands, or tapes, D, are united by a series of transverse bands or ribbons, E, of sufliciont length to pass around the waist of the wearer. The lower ends of the tapes or ribbons D are provided with books or catches F, which are passed into or through the eyes or loops C of the folding edge B. The ends of the tapes or ribbons E are provided with hooks or catches G, and with eyes H, for the purpose of uniting the ends of the tapes or ribbons E after these tapes have been passed around the waist of the wearer. The coat can be made of cloth or other fabric, rubber, or
any other suitable material, and the bands D and E and the edge B may be provided with buttons and button-holes or other devices in place of the hooks and eyes for the purpose of securing the tapes D to the pocket and uniting the ends of the tapes E. v
The coat is used as follows: The tapes or ribbons E are passed and secured around the waist over the short skirt or petticoat J, or below all those petticoats or skirtsK that are to be protected from being soiled. It is evident that the long skirts or petticoats only need be protected, as the short petticoats do not reach very far below the knee. That part of the coat A that forms the folding edge B is folded up on the inside of the skirts, as shown in Fig.2, and the hooks F are passed into the eyes or apertures (J for retaining the edge B in a raised position. The lower parts of the dress and long skirts are thus protected from moisture, dust, or mud by the folding edge B. When the coat Ais tobe removed the hooks F must be taken out of the eyes C. The tapes or ribbons D and E are not removed, but are worn until the walking-clothes are removed altogether.
The curved-up edge of fold B need not be of the same material as the coat A, for the coat may be of rubber and the turned-up edge of cloth, or vice versa. The folding edge is preferably sewed in the coat proper.
Having thus described myinvention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a ladys coat having the folding edge B on the inner side at the lower edge thereof, of a series of ribbons or tapes, D and E, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a ladys coat, A, of the folding edge B, the eyes C, attached to this edge B, the tapes D and E, and the hooks F, attached to the ends of the tapes D, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
KATHARINE STUART LATHROP.
