Description

UNITED STATES ATENT viii AQLWH- W FFlC OIL-CONDUCTOR FOR CAR-AXLE BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,490, dated August 29, 1882,
Application filed June 14, 1882. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUS DE LONG, of Allegheny city, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oil-Conductors for Car Axle Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to promote efficiency and durability in oil-conductors for car-axle boxes.
The invention consists in animal hair washed, picked, carded, and oiled to adapt it for use as an oil-conductor for car-axle boxes, as will be hereinafter fully described,
In preparing my oil-conductor, I take animalhair as obtained at a tannery, and which is considered as a waste material, and thoroughly wash it to remove the lime applied in removing the said hair from hides preparatory totanningthem. Thehairisthoroughlydried, is passed through an ordinary picker, and then through a carding-machine, and is then ready for use or market.
For conveniencein packing the hair for market and in removing it from the packages for use it may be moistened without oil to remove its fluffiness or tendency to fly about, so that it can be conveniently handled. The hair is used in the same manner as cotton-waste for bringing the oil in the axle-box into contact with the axle-journal, and thus keep the said journal lubricated. This hair is an excellent oil-conductor, keeping the axle-journals lubricated as long as there is any oil in the axlebox, and is also very durable, wearing much longer than the materials ordinarily used for this purpose, and not being so liable to burn or char from the heat.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. An oil-conductor for car-axle journalboxes, consistin g ofanimal hair washed, picked, and carded, substantially as herein shown and described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, animal hair washed, picked, carded, and oiled to adapt it for use as an oil-conductor for ear-axle boxes, substantially as herein shown and described.
JULIUS DE LONG.
