FLAVIUS CHENEY, OF SENECA FALLS, NEW YORK.
ERASER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 263,387, dated August 29, 1882.
I Application filed April 17, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FLAVIUS CHENEY, of Seneca Falls, in the county ofSeneca and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Erasers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to blackboard and other eraser-s, and has for its object to provide means for retaining the dustarising from its use, so that it can be afterward removed without inconvenience; and to this endit consists in certain improvements in the construction and operation of the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View; Fig. 2, a longitudinal sectional view, and Fig. 3 a transverse sectional view.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates a block, of wood or other suitable material, forming the handle of my improved eraser, and provided with the usual concave sides B B, to enable it to be more readily grasped by the hand of the operator. In the bottom of block A are formed a series of parallel longitudinal grooves, C, all open at but one and the same end, D, as shown.
E is the eraser proper, formed of felt or other suitable material, and glued or otherwise secured to the bottom of block A. The eraser is also provided with a series of longitudinal parallel rows of perforations, F, opening intothe grooves C.
The operation and advantages of my invention are obvious. In erasing, the blockA is held with the open ends of the groovesC upwardly. The crayon-dust which "is loosened from the blackboard or other device in erasing will, instead of flying about, pass through the perforations Fin the felt into the grooves C in the block, which thus form a receptacle for the same. When it is desired to empty the dust from the grooves it is only necessary to turn their open ends down, when it will readily fall out into the receptacle prepared to receive it.
It will thus be seen that my invention is simple, durable, inexpensive, and of superior convenience and utility. Even should the handle be formed without the grooves C, the perforations in the eraser would form d ust-receptacles, from which it could be readily shaken when desired.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcut-- The combination, with the block or handle provided with the series of parallel longitudinal grooves, all open at but one and the same end, of the erasing material provided with corresponding series of parallel longitudinal rows of perforations, each entire row opening into the same groove, and the perforations extending entirely through the erasing substance and open on the surface thereof, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FLAVIUS CHENEY.
