ROOFING-'TONGS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 263,381, dated August 29, 1882.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS BABB BEESON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Roofing-Tongs or Double- Seamers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to that class of tongs which are used for the purpose of roofing, and relates to certain construction and improvements in and on roofin g-ton gs, but more especially to that description of tongs patented to me by Letters Patent N 0. 204,526, hearing date June 4,1878.

In all the figures the same letters refer to the same parts.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved tongs. Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 represent the edges of tin in roofs and the bends given to the same in bending or seaming. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of my tongs when in use and applied on the tin root. Fig. 7 is a section taken on line a; a; of Fig. 1.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same.

This invention consists in certain hereinafter-described constructions in my hereinbefore numbered and dated patent of June 4, and consists in providing certain equivalent construction to the tongs, and in providing a plate as an equivalent to the rollers, as set forth in the hereinbefore-stated Letters Patent.

In the annexed drawings the tongs have two jaws, A and B. The jaw A is provided with the flat surface (6, which terminates in a recess, a and into this recess a is fitted the flat metal plate a and, as shown, is held in position by bolts a. Fig. 2 represents the uprightjoint of tin before the operation of bending due to the action of my tongs. Jaw A is then closed down, and the fiat piece a of the jaw A, together with the flat face a of the same jaw, closes over the joint (I and makes the bend d, leaving the tin edges in that form" ready for the next operation, which is that the tongs are reversed, so thatjaw Ais turned round and the bend d closed, as shown in Fig. 4.

Fig. 5 shows the finished joint, with the double turns,the seamer, ofa smaller size, having likewise bent and closed over'the bends.

The plate a is cheaper than the roller, and is placed there in lieu thereof. It is susceptible of being adjusted to any angle and removed, if necessary.

The handles a and b are provided with suitable terminating handles, all of which can be either screwed into the bosses or cast in or riveted, as may be most expedient.

Having thus described the construction and operation of my invention, what I claim, and

desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows:
