Hereto fore. to facilitate the use of both bobby pins and. hairpins by individuals as Well as beauty operators, it has been proposed to provide dispensers by which such pins will'be made available one at a time, as required: For hairpins the problems has been relatively simple,'req'uiring mainly means for preventing jamming-in the dispenser. However. unlike hairpins, the ends o'fa bobby pin are normally pressed together and must be opened before use. To avoid the damaging effects of opening bobby pins by teeth orfingernails, a bobby pin dispenser thus must possess the additional capability of presenting the pins to the user in open or spreadcondition. v i I It is the primary object of this invention to provide an improved bobby pin dispenser having means for dispensing the pins one at a time in spread condition. I
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved bobby pin dispenser for dispensing spread pins from a stack, including means for preventing jamming of the pins.
An additional object of the invention is to provide an improved bobby pin dispenser for dispensing spread pins wherein means are provided for preventing jamming between pins either while stacked or during dispensing, and for individually ejecting the pins laterally of the stack with their spread ends foremost.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved bobby pin dispenser of relatively simple and inexpensive construction for effectively dispensing bobby pinsindividually in spread condition. I

Referring now'indetail to the drawings, illustrating preferred embodiment's'of the invention and in which like reference characters designate like parts; it is contemplated that the dispenser of the present invntion in production form will be fabricated of plastic or other suitable material and provided with a cover hingedly or otherwise attached, by which its working mechanism will be concealed and protected. However, for purposes of illustration, the dispenser has been shown Without a cover and with its mechanism for the most part exposed. I
Referring first to Figures 1 through 6, the embodiment thereillustrated is comprised of a base or case I for'housing-receiving or enclosing a plurality of stacked or superposed bobby pins, indicated diagrammatically at 2, the case having ends I and sides I: Attached to or formed in the base and preferably extending along the longitudinal axis thereof is a guideway or channel 3 in which the stack of bobby pins is adapted to be seated. This guideway' may be defined or delimited by parallelly disposed side-or guide bars 4 and 5, one positioned adjacent each side O f the case, the spacing therebetween being substantially the heightlor length of the usual or other bobby for which the dispenser is designed. As
.shown, the guide bars or rails 4 and 5 are adapted to. guide, confront or substantially abut, respectively, the closed and open ends of the hobby pin and confine or retain'the latter therebetween.
7 To maintain or hold thebobby pins within the guide bars 4 and 5 and prevent their displacement outwardly or vertically or the guide channel 3 with consequent jamming or overlapping, iiTflS necessaryto provide means for holding the pins within the channel. For this, purpose there is provided a guide member or finger 6, disposed inwardly of and substantially parallel to the guide bar 4. whichfinger is adapted to be threaded or project through the closed ends 01 the pins. While this finger may form part of the aforementioned cover, or be fixedly or hingedly attached to the base, it has been shown removably attached adjacent th inner or lower, hereinafter to be termed the feed end, of the case. While the finger may be either flexible or rigid, depending on the mode of attachment, to facilitate loading of the dispenser, the disclosed ,removably attached finger is jipreferably rigid. At the other edge of the guide channel defined by the guide bar 5 the open ends of the pins are held against displacement by a hold-down plate I overlying the bar 5 and extending inside the bar over the adjacent edge of the guideway. As in the case of the hold-down finger 6,the hold-down plate '2 may be attached to the aforementioned .cover, but is shown removably attached to the base through the guide bar 5. To facilitate contact with the confronting ends of the pins and prevent excessivewear, the plate may have an underface downslanting towards its inner ed e to provide a detent ortip 8 capable of surfacecontact with the confronting faces of the pins.
,It is contemplated that the bobby pins will be fed upwardly or outwardly of the feed end .of the case and be discharged or dispensed adjacent the opposite end thereof. .Forthis purpose there is provided a follower or pressure block or bar ,9
whichis adapted to act or bear against the under or inner side of the stack of pins. The follower block is shown as a substantially :fiat bar of rectangular cross-section which extends transversely of the guideway and has one ,or its .inner end abutting against and slidably engaging the confronting face of the inner guide rail 4. .Outwardly of this end the follower is transversely slotted to provide-a recessorigroo ve l conforming substantially to andadapted to accommodate the finger .6. So formed, the inner end portion of the follower is substantially ,L-shaped and adapted to slide along a track .formed by the meeting walls of the inner .side and bed ll of the guideway, being retainedor locked in ,its position transversely or laterally of the guideway and maintained against misalignment therewith through the finger 6. In the illustrated embodiment the follower extends across the guideway and is guided at its other or outer end through a transverse groove 12 formed in its outer end which is adapted .to receive and slidably engage a corresponding lip or projection [3 formed in or attached to the case I. To avoid interference with the open ends of the pins this projection extends or is disposed below the level of the bed ll of the guide channel and extends into a rec s it formed in the base I below andintermediate the uide bars .4 and and extending substantially the full length of the-guide channel.
In the longitudinally extending recess J4 may be accommodated the feed mechanism through which the necessary fee ressure is applied to the stack of bobby pins through the follower block. This mechanism may be in the form of a coil spring or other resilient means 15 and :may apply the necessary pressure either through compression or tension, the latter b ing .ShO this embodiment in the accompanying drawin s- For the illustrated form of resilient driving means one .end of the coil spring L5 is attached to the underside of the vfollower 9,. and the other end to the base adjacent the feed end thereof, the spring intermediate its ends being looped over a pulley or like member 16 mountedin the recess i adjacent its outer end. For holding the follower in retracted or inoperat v po ition. 5
when the dispenser is being loaded, there is preferably provided a Z-shaped resilient latch or catch ll' mounted in the recess and having an opening or seat I la adapted to engage and interlock with an abutment 18 on the follower when the follower is retracted.
At its upper or discharge end the guideway 3 terminates in a dispensing slot or track IS, the latter being disposed transversely or laterally of the guideway :3 and parallel to the longitudinal axes of the bobby pins in the stack. This slot isof sufiicient width to accommodate but a single bobby pin and opens at one end exteriorly of the 1oase,.;its5side opposite the guideway being defined by a coterminous side wall l9a. Slidably mountedin the track and-reciprocable relative thereto is an ejector, slide .or plunger 20 through which a pin, forced or driven into the slot by the follower 9, is ejected endwise from the case transversely of the guideway and parallel to the remaining pins in the stack. To prevent jamming through intrusion of the next or adjoining pin into the slot while one pin is being ejected, the ejector 29 is provided with a rearwardly projecting extensionlzl whichis adapted to overlie and engage theconfronting side of the next pin and particularly the .closed end thereof, as the plunger moves transversely across the case, thus to ensure that the slot is occupied by but asinglepin at any given time. Displacement of this next pin transversely of the stack .during ejection is prevented .or stopped by the upper end of the guide bar 5 which,.as shown, extends to and terminates at the ejector slot.
To facilitate its operation the plunger maybe provided with an offset ribbedoperating knob 22 and the underside of the offset may have a .depending slide, tongue or flange 23 .adapted to ride in a slot or track 24 formed in or attached to the end portion of the case beyond and parallel to the ejectiontrack t9, the tongueserving'to maintain the plunger in the ejection slot during its passage across the open side of the slot connecting the latter with the guide channel 3. While by undercutting the side walls of the track 24 or the ejection track l9 and correspondingly forming the interfittin g parts of the plunger, the latter may belocked in its track, for illustration the plunger has been given merely a sliding fit with the .case. a
It is of particular importance tha'tthe bobby pins, as individually ejected from the case through the coaction .of the follower .9 and plunger 20, have their open ends spread apart or open to avoid imposing this tedious and often harmful task upon the individual operating the dispenser. The device of the present invention .is especially adapted to accomplish end. This is obtained by the provision of a wedge, spacer or separator 25 interrupting .or overlying the ejection slot l9 adjacent the open end thereof and having its apex 0); leading edge directed. towards and disposed to enter the open end of the pin. As with certain of the other members, previously described, the wedge may be formed integrally with .or secured to the case, that illustrated being attached to the case through an integral supporting block 25. Employing the wedge, the legs of a hobby pin are progressively separated as the pin is ejected from the dispenser, presenting the pins for use in opened condition. To' enable a pin to be withdrawn from the dispenser, despite the obstacle presented by the wedge to the pins closed or trailing end, the ejection slot, adjacent its open end in the proximity or area of the wedge, is widened or offset by cutting back the guide bar toprovide a passageor ofiset 21 clear of the wedge into which the closed .end of the pin can be moved by lateral displacement relative to its path -of travel through the slot, thereby enabling the pin to be free from or cleared-of the wedge and removed from the dispenser.
Since threaded through the closed ends of the pins the hold-down finger 6- must terminate at or short of the ejection slot I 9. While by recessing its leading edge to conform to that of the closed end of the pin the ejector can be employed to perform the function of the hold-downfinger on the pin being ejected, in practice it has been found necessary only to hold the pin against vertical dislodgement from the ejection slotin the region of or adjacent the wedge.- In-theillus trated embodiment the desired restraint against ,dislodgementis obtained by aprojection or extension 28 formed integrally with and projecting from the upper end of the hold-down plate and partly overlying the ejection slot in advance of the wedge. So disposed, the'projection acts as a fulcrum'by which the spreading action of the wedge on the open-end of the pin is transmitted to maintain or hold the pins closed end in the ejection slot. I r
In loading the "dispenser the follower block 9 is locked in inoperative position through engagement with the catch l1. If, as in the illustrated embodiment, the finger 6 and hold-down plate I are attached to the base rather than being for-med as a part of a cover or lid, both are removed. The bobby pins are then successively fed onto the finger by threading or piercing their closed ends thereby until a stack of the desired size has been obtained. The finger is next reinserted in the case and the hold-down plate I replaced forcing the open ends of the pins down against the base of the guideway and with the finger maintaining the pins in laterally aligned position, avoiding any possibility of jamming in the stack. O-n subsequent release of the follower block 9 the dispenser is ready to eject or dispense bobby pins individually or one by one, as desired, open end first, with separated ends and for immediate use. Considering now Figures 7 through 13, the embodiment of the bobby pin dispenser of the present invention there illustrated, while operating in somewhatthe same manner as the first embodiment, differs therefrom in certain details. Like the first embodiment, the second is comprised of a base or case I for housing a stack ofbobbypins 2 in a longitudinally extending guidewayor chan-- nel 3, and having parallelly disposed side or guide bars 4 and 5 defining or delimiting .the channel. It also has a guide member or hold-down finger B disposed inwardly of and. substantially parallel to the guide bar 4, on which the closed ends of the bobby pins are received or threaded. Additionally, there is the same longitudinal recess i4 disposed intermediate the guide bar 5 and finger i5 and below the bed I l of the channel 31' Unlike the first embodiment, these several members, with the .exception of the finger 6, have. been illustrated as integral with or part of the base I, the latter thus being formable in J one'piecei by die casting or like means. 7
In place of the hold-down plate I of the first embodiment there is here provided a hold-down plate 29 overlying the guide bar 5 and hingedly attached adjacent the corresponding outer edge of the'case. This'hinged plate is normally held in flat or fiush position against the guide bar 5 by a spring or like means 30. As, shown, the
hinged plate partly overlapsor. overlies the channel 3 and has a depending or downturned lip-3i at its inner edge which is adapted toresiliently engage and-hold in place the open ends of the stacked bobby pins. 1
For urging the pins 2 toward the upper or discharge end ofthe case there is provideda follower or pressure block or bar 32 which is adapted to act or bear against the lower or inner side of the stack of pins. This follower is of somewhat T-shape with its cross member 33 riding in the channel 3 in position to engage the side of the lowermostpin of the stack and its depending leg projecting into and slidable along the longitudinal recess I4,- the leg-confronting sidewalls of the recess serving to maintain the follower in its position transversely of the case.
For aiding in guiding the follower, as well as holding it in the case, here is provided a U- shaped guide rod or member 35 disposed longitudinally of the recess and having its open end anchored. at the upper end thereof. As shown, the guide rod 35 is offset transversely of the recess ll with one or the middle arm 36 disposed substantially centrally along the longitudinal axis .of .the recess and the other side or inner arm 31 disposed adjacent one side of the recess. For engagement with the guide rod 35 the follower 32 is pierced transversely'by two holes or passages 38, one registering with and slidably receiving each of the arms. For resiliently urging the follower toward the outlet ordischarge end of the case there is provided resilient means whichmay be in the form of a coil spring 39 wound around the guide rod. In order that its force may be applied substantially centrally of the follower, the spring is looped around theguide rod with its end encircling the middle arm 36 abutting the outer face of the follower, and its other end encircling the inner arm 31' abutting the upper end of the recess, the passage '38 receivingthe inner arm 31 being enlarged sufficiently to encompass the spring. While slidingly receiving. the middle arm 36 the other passage is sufficiently large to permit angling movement of the follower relative thereto to enable the follower to adjust itself to corresponding movement of the stack 2.
It has been previously pointed out that the hold-down plate 29in this embodiment is hingedly attached to the case. So constructed, the plate may be lifted when the dispenserxis to be loaded so as to permit insertion of the open ends ofthe bobby pins thereunder. To render this action automatic there is provided on the follower an actuating pin or projection 40, projecting from the edge thereof confronting the guide bar 5, and adapted normally to ride in the space below the lip 3| of the plate occupied by the open ends'of the pins. By downwardly beveling or downslanting the lip adjacent the infeed end of the case, there is provided a cam surface 4! through which the projection 40 is enabled to progressively lift or raise the hinged plate as the follower is withdrawn against the force of the spring 30 preliminary to loading, the consequent cam action raising the lip sufficiently to permit insertion of the open ends of thepins thereunder. 1:
At its upper or discharge end the guidechannel 3 terminates in or is delimited by a dispensing or ejecting slot or track 42 which .is. disposed transversely or laterally: of the guideway 3 and parallel to the longitudinal axes of the hobby pins in the stack, the slot being defined on its ecrees side opposite the guide channel by a coterrninous s'idew'allfla. .A's inthe case of the first embodiment, this track is sufiiciently wide to accommodate but a single bobby .pin and opens exteriorally of the case I at its end corresponding to the open ends of the pins. Unlike the track of the first embodiment, the bottom wall or pinsupporting surface 43 of the present track is upwardly inclined or upslanting adjacent its ejection or open end, thi's upslant acting'onthe lower leg of the bobby pin to progressively tilt or cant the latter as-it moves along the track. Overlying the iup'slanting portion 44 of the track is a wedge or spreader 45 which is disposed in the path of and adapted to enter and progressively spread the open end of a bobby pin as the latter moves towards the ejection end of the track.
It will be noted that the hinged hold-down plate 29 of this embodiment does not project into the projection slot and thus cannot assist in holding the pin-within the track as the latter is ejected, this modification being necessary because of the tilting of the pin. However, the same result'is accomplished here by the spreading action, the greater dislodgem'ent of the upper end of the pin, 'as it is spread, applying a force 's'ufncient to hold the closed end of the pin within and against the undersurface of the track. Once a .pin has been spread-to the extent desired it is removed from the dispenser in the same manner as the first embodiment through the provi sion of an offset 4:6 in the slot adjacent the spreader for receiving and freeing or releasing the closed end of the pin.
The above described ejection of each bobb pin as it enters the ejection track is obtained through a plunger or ejector 41 having an offset ribbed operating knob 48. In the first embodiment a tail or extension 2| is utilized for holding the next pin out of the slot While one is being ejected. Here the same result is obtained by providing on the ejector a beveled flange 49 which projects beyond the ejection track and is adapted to override the next pin. .By preventing the next pin from jumping out of the guideway and forcing the side of the pin to bear against the confronting side of the ejector during reciprocation of the latter, the flange 49 inhibits the next pin from entering fully into the ejection :slot until the ejector is returned to its initial position. For attaching the ejector to the case, the latter is preferably transversely slotted adjacent its upper end beyond the ejection track to receive a U-sectioned slide 59, the sides of which are spaced from confronting walls of the Y case. This slide or track may be attached to the case by screws or like .means andis adapted to slidably engage and interlock with the ejector 4-! through the provision of a pair of depending legs on the latter embracing or engaging the sides of the slide and each having inturned flanges 52 at their lower ends for locking the ejector against displacement.
In operation, the second embodiment of the dispenser is loaded in the aforementioned manher by withdrawing the follower 32 toward the feed end of the case, this same movement lifting the hinged plate 29. If desired, the follower may be held in withdrawn position by a catch or like means (not shown), such as that provided for the first embodiment. After the stack of pins has been loaded on the finger 6 .in the manner previously explained, the dispenser will successively eject individual fpins merely by operation 'of the ejector through its operating knob, each pin being tiltedlongitudinally in process or ejectment and thus presenting its spread open end in easily accessible lip-tilted position, ready for use.
It has been previously mentioned that the follower has suincient clearance relative to its U- shaped guide rod to allow relative angling movement of the former. As the reciprocable plunger is withdrawn for recocking after a pin is ejected, first the open end and ultimately the closed end of the next pin is exposed and free to enter the ejection slot. The follower being capable-oi limited angling movement and having pressure applied approximately at its center, will thus cause the stack to angle as the slot is exposed, thereby progressively feeding the next pin into the slot.
From the above detailed description it will be apparent that there has been provided an improved bobby pin dispenser capable of dispensing pins individually as desired and in open condition ready for use, the dispenser also being particularly adapted to prevent jamming of the pins during their progress therethrough. It should be understood that the described and disclosed embodiments are merely exemplary of the invention and that all modifications are intended to be included which do not depart either from the spirit of the invent-ion or the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A bobby pin dispenser comprising a case adapted to receive a stack of bobby pins, guide means in said case for maintaining said pins in lateral alignment, a resiliently urged follower associated with saidg-uide means for forcing said pins toward one end of said case, an ejection track in said acase disposed in the path of and adapted to receive one of said pins, said track having a coterminous side 'wall opposing said follower, means for ejecting said one pin from a side of said case along said track, and means adjacent the ejection end of said track for entering an open end of and spreading said pin during ejection thereof.
2. A bobby pin dispenser comprising a case adapted to receive a stack of bobby pins, a guideway in said case for maintaining said pins in lateral alignment, means associated with said guideway for resiliently urging said stack toward an end of said case, a wall delimiting the end of said guideway and opposing said urging means, said delimiting wall including said end and extending therebeyon'd to aside of said case, means reciprocable transversely of said guideway for ejecting one of said pins from said side of said case, and means disposed in the path of and engageable with an open end of said one pin for spreading said pin during ejection thereof.
3. A bobby pin dispenser comprising a case adapted to receive a stack of bobby pins, a guideway in said case for maintaining the pins in said stack in aligned relation, lresilient means for nor mally urging said stack along said guideway, means disposed transversely of said guideway for receiving one of said pins, said pin-receiving means having a coterininous side wall opposing said urging means, means reciprocable along said transverse means for ejecting said pin from a side of said case, and a spreader disposed in the path of an open end of said pin for spreading said pin during ejection thereof.
4. A bobby pin dispenser comprising a case adapted to receive a stack of bcbby a guide- Way in saidcase for maintaining the pins in said stack in aligned relation, resilient means for normally urging said stack along-said guideway, an open-ended ejection slot disposed transversely of and delimiting said guideway for receiving one pin of said stack, said slot having a coterminous side wall opposing said urging means, an ejector reciprocable along said slot for ejecting said pin from a side of said case open end first, said ejector abutting a side of and preventing entrance of the next pin in 'said stack into saidslot during said ejection, and a spreader interrupting said slot adjacent the open end thereof and positioned to engage the open end of and spread said pin during ejection thereof.
5. A bobby pin dispenser comprising a case adapted to receive a stack of bobby pins, a guideway in said case for maintaining the pins in said stack in lateral alignment, means for resiliently urging said stack toward an end of said case, an ejection slot extending transversely of said guideway to a side of said case and delimiting said guideway for receiving one of said pins, said slot having a coterminous side wall opposing said urging means, an ejector reciprocable of said slot for ejecting said pins from said side of said case open end first, a spreader interrupting said slot adjacent an end thereof and lying in the path of said open end for spreading said pin during ejection thereof, and means partly overlying said slot for holding said pin in said slot during said ejection.
6. A bobby pin dispenser comprising a case adapted to receive a stack of bobby pins, a guideway in said case for maintaining the pins in said stack in lateral alignment, means associated with said guideway for resiliently urging said stack toward an end of said case, an ejection slot extending transversely of said guideway to a side of said case and delimiting said guideway for receiving one of said pins, said slot having a coterminous side wall opposing said urging means, an ejector reciprocable of said slot for ejecting said pin from said side of said case open end first, a spreader interrupting said slot adjacent an end thereof and lying in the path of said open end for spreading said pin during ejection thereof, means associated with said guideway and partly overlying said slot for holding said pin in said slot during said ejection, and said case having an opening connected to and offset from said slot beyond said holding means permitting transverse displacement and disengagement of said spread pin from said slot and removal from said case.
7. A bobby pin dispenser comprising a case adapted to receive a stack of bobby pins, a guideway in said case for maintaining the pins in said stack in lateral alignment, means associated with said guideway for resiliently urging said stack toward an end of said case, an ejection slot extending transversely of said guideway to a side of said case and delimiting said guideway for receiving one of said pins, said slot having a coterminous side wall opposing said urging means, an ejector reciprocable of said slot for ejecting said pin from said side of said case open end first, a spreader interrupting said slot adjacent an end thereof and lying in the path of said open end for spreading said pin during ejection thereof, and means associated with said guideway and partly overlying said slot for holding said pin in said slot during said ejection, said means operating with said spreader to maintain the closed end of said pin in said slot.
8. A bobby pin dispenser comprising a case adapted to receive a stack of bobby pins, a guideway in said case for maintaining the pins in said stack in aligned relation, means for urging said spreader lying in the path of said open endfor spreading said pin during ejection'thereof, and saidcase having an opening in said side adjacent'said spreader and offset inwardly of said end wall permitting displacement of the closed end of said pin thereinto andremoval of said pin from saidcase.
9. A bobby pin dispenser comprising a case, a guideway within said case for housing a plurality of bobby pins, means for successively ejecting individual pins from a side of said case, and wedging means spaced ofiset from and having its leading edge disposed paral el to said guideway for entering an open end of and spreading each of said pins during ejection thereof.
10. A bobby pin dispenser comprising a case, means in said case for housing a plurality of bobby pins, an ejection track adjacent one end of said case for receiving an individual pin, means reciprocable of said track for ejecting said pin therethrough from said case, and means associated with said track for entering and spreading the open end of said pin during ejection thereof, said track having an outlet including said spreading means and oifset therefrom toward the opposite end of said case for removing said pin from said case.
11. A bobby pin dispenser comprising a case, means in said case for housing a plurality of bobby pins, an ejection track extending through a side of said case for receiving an individual pin, reciprocable means for ejecting said pin through said track from said side of said case, and means associated with said track for both tilting said pin about a closed end thereof and spreading said pin during ejection thereof.
12. A bobby pin dispenser comprising a case, means in said case for housing a plurality of bobby pins, an ejection track inclined adjacent its outer end, means for ejecting a pin from said case through said track, and a spreader overlying said incline, said ejecting means cooperating with said spreader and incline for spreading and tilting said pin during ejection thereof.

A bobby pin dispenser comprising a case, a guideway in said case for receiving a stack of bobby pins, a finger insertable through closed ends of the pins of said stack for maintaining said ends in said guideway, a guide plate hingedly attached to said case and overlying open ends of said pins for maintaining said ends within said guideway, a follower for resiliently urging said stack along said guideway, means associated with said follower'and engageable with a cam face on said plate for lifting said plate to permit insertion of said open ends thereunder, an ejection track' disposed transversely of said guideway for successively receiving an individual pin from said stack, an ejector reciprocable of said track for ejecting said individual pins therethrough from said case, said track having an incline adjacent its ejection end, and a spreader overlying said incline, said ejector cooperating with said incline and spreader for tilting and spreading an open end of said pin during ejection thereof.
