-9 Claims.
This invention relates to dispensers and more particularly -to devices for dispensing articles mounted on strip material such, for example, as pins or the like. t
Devices for this 'purpose are usually 'arranged'to 'feed an article supporting strip 'step by step to successively 'place one article after the other in predetermined position to be seized by the operator. The usage to vwhich such devices are subjected lis frequently severe and an .object of this invention "is to provide a dispenser of the type set forth of such simple, rugged construction that it is adapted to give long continued service without interruption due to any 'mechanical defect, while avoiding the necessity for heavy or cumbersome parts.
This and other objects which will be apparent to those skilled .in this particular art are .attained by the invention hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings lin which, Fig. l is a top plan view of a dispenser constructed in accordance with one embodiment of this invention, the central part of the supply roll being broken away so as to disclose the adjustable support therefor; v
` Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the 'mechanism shown in Fig. 1, parts thereof being broken away.;
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing 'one side of the operating mechanism with the "cover plate removed, the parts being in normal `inoperative position; v
Fig. 4 is a view from the front of Fig. 3;
, Fig. 5 is a top plan View of the parts shown in Fig. 3, certain of the partsbeing in section;
Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. '3 showing 'the actuating mechanism in depressed position; Y
Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view showing the parts in the position of Fig. 6.;
Fig. 8 is a viewsirnilar to Fig. 3 showing the opposite side of the actuating mechanism.;
Fig. 9 is a transverse sectional view on the line 9-9 of Fig. 8; and
Fig. 10 is a view similar to Fig. 6 showing the 'opposite side of the actuating mechanism;
The illustrated embodiment of the present invention comprises a lbase I.I having a pin I2 'for rotatably supporting a supply roll 'I3 of pins "Ill mounted in the conventional manner on paper tape I5. An adjustable support lfor holding the supply roll at different levels so as to accommodate rolls vof different sized pins is provided by a roll supporting block I6 loosely mounted on the pin I2 and having 4a plurality of recesses I1 in the bottom thereof of different depths. "By rotating the supporting block IB to locate a vsupporting pin 4I 8 in the correct recess I "I, the block I6 'is held at the required height to properly position the superimposed .supply roll relatively to an associated feeding mechanism.
A strip feeding mechanism I9 is mounted upon (Cl. vB12-4474:)
the base I1 at 4one Aside thereof and is spaced from the pin I2 a distance suicient to accommodate the largest size supply roll I3 with which the mechanism will' be used. The feeding mecha-r nism is adapted to be manually operated and the `arrangement lis such that the operators 1ingers are brought automatically together upon a pin which has been moved into position to be seized, and in lsuch position has been partially l5. A guide-way 2t for the pin 4holding strip is formed between vertically extending plates 2I mounted on the base Ii. A feeding -pawl 22 is pivotally mounted on a sup- -pcrtin'g slide 23 mounted for reciprocating movement in guides 124 formed by ears struck from the upper portion of 'one of the plates 2|. A pawl spring l 25 presses the pawl inwardly so that its inner `end extends through a 'slot 26 in the supporti-ng slide A23 and through a slot 2'I in the supporting side plate 2|. Feeding movement is iin-- parted to the pawl by a slidable actuator 28 mounted for 'vertical sliding movement in guides '29V 'formed on the outer faces of the side plates 21. 'The pawl slide is provided with a lug 3i) which extends into a cam slot 3i formed in the adjacent `side of the actuator 28 so that vertical movement of fthe latter reciprocates the slide 2t and pawl 22 a distance sufficient to move the pins I4 successively into position to be seized. The 'actuator is normally held `in elevated position by a spring 32 mounted 4on a supporting post 233 having one end extending through a spring lug 34 lon the actuator, the spring being tension-ed'by having -i-tsother-farmv pressed against the base i i.
Associated with 'the actuator 28 for vertical movement therewith is an ejector for partially ejecti-ng 'the pins `from the paper strip and movn ing i'them into a position kwhere their heads will be:automaticallyseized by the fingers of the operator depressing the actuator 28. As illustrated, this-ejector is l'formed by a yieldable spring finger '35 secured at its lower end tto one side of the 'actuator slide 28 and having its upper end 36 cbent inwardly 'into position yto resiliently engage the shank of a pin below the pin head, see Figs. '3, y"l and 8. A pin guide 3i extends upwardly from one of 'the side plates 2| on the side of the pin oppositer from the ejector 36, and the guide 31 is open fon the side facing the ejector finger 'so `that the movement of the pin as it is drawn partially out of the supporting paper strip is properly guided.y 'A fpin holding I'springv finger 38 'is mounted von a ejected from the 'strip bracket -39 and is adapted to move inwardly Ato engage the pin shank when the ejector is lowered, as shown in Figs. 7 and l0.
r-Phe ftop of :the actuator 28 is `formed by a circular presser 1plate Edil Yhaving 'a central perfora- 'tion through which the partially ejected -pinV and the -p'in guide 3l project whenv lthe actuator is depressed by the operator. It will be apparent movement shifts the feeding pawl 22 rearwardly a distance equal to the distance between succes-V sive pins on the paper tape. At the same time, the operators forenger and thumb automatically seize the pin which is already in the guide 31 and which is held therein by the spring 'finger 38 being pressed against -the vshank of the pin by contact with a shoulder 42 below the presser plate 4D, see Figs. 4 and 7. The pin in the guide can then be extracted and in doing so the operator releases the presser plate 4Q and actuator 28 so that the mechanism is raised by the spring 32. The first operation of the vertical movement causes the cam slot 3| and spring 43 to feed the pawl 22 forwardly a distance sufficient to locate the next succeeding pin in position beneath the pin guide 3l. Theremaining movement of the actuator 28 upwardly brings the ejector finger 35 into contact with the pin under the head and raises it upwardly through the Y guide 3l into position to be seized upon subsequent depression of the presser plate 40. A spring pressed holding pawl 44 is mounted on one of the side plates 2|, see Figs. 8 and 9, and extends inwardly through a slot 45 for preventing retrograde movement. of the pin strip l5.A
Although'the cam slot'3l which actuates the feeding pawl is illustrated as a closed slot capable of moving the pawl in both directions, I prefer to employ the pawl spring 43 as this permits the use of a lighter spring 32 for moving the actuator so as to make the operation thereof easy and smooth. The mechanism is preferably housed within a casing 46 and cover 47. Y
It will be apparent that the invention can be variously modied and adapted within the scope of the appended claims.
