. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS H. GIBSON, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE ALBANY ANILINE AND CHEMICAL WORKS, OF SAME PLACE.
Moe
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed July T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HEALEY GIB- soN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany 5 and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mordants, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in mordants for use with coal-tar and other colors up- LC on cotton or any textile fabric; and itconsists of the following substancescombined in the proportions following: one part acetate of lead, two parts alum, and one part stanna-te of soda.
In preparing my mordant the materials are [5 mixed, in the proportions given, with a sufficient quantity of water to dissolve them; or they may be compounded in a dry state and the water added immediately before use.
In order to prepare any fabric with my DANT.
3, 1682. (N0 specimens.)
mordant, the cloth to be dyed is dipped in a solution of it, a few turns are given to saturate it, and it is ready for the color-bath.
In my experiments I have found that a similar compound to the above may be obtained by the use of one part acetate of lead and two parts alum.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
The herein-described mordant, which consists in the combination of acetate of lead, alum, and stannate of soda in the proportions mentioned.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. v
THOMAS H. GIBSON.
