Description
STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ADRIANNA ST'fi'RCKE, OF OSSINING, YORK.
LAUNDRY BLUING.
i No Drawing.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ADRIANNA STfiRcKE, a citizen of the United States, residing 1n Ossining, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Laundry Bluing, of which the following is a specification.
V This invention relates'to laundry bluing, and aims to provide certain improvements therein. Various bluings in powdered or solid form are now in commercial use, but these so far as I am aware are open to the objection that they' are only partly soluble especiallydncold water, and hence stain ordiscolor the fabrics. Various substances enter into their composition which are deleterious to the clothing, which substances finally load the fabri'c and cause it to crack or otherwise injure it. Furthermore, if the clothing is left in such bluing solutions it speedily becomes sour and discolored.
According to the present invention I rovide a bluing in powdered form whic is practically instantly soluble in water, either hot or cold, which will not discolor the clothing since there is no precipitate or insoluble sediment, and in which there is no. danger of souring even if the clothes are permitted to soak in the bluing solution for an indefinite period.
In proceeding to produce the bluing provided by my invention I take commercially pure borax, and pulverize the same finely, passing it through a screen or screens until the desired fineness is obtained. I next take commercial style P in the trade, 2'. e., soluble Prussian blue, ferric potassium ferro-v cyanid. This I also grind to a very fine powder. I then mix 1 the two thoroughly,
" preferably in the proportion of about 95 even and, thoroughly mixed product isobtained. The bluing is then ready for use,
b and should be added to the water by sifting Specification of Letters Patent.
it in through a sieve-topped can or otherwise.
Soluble Prussian blue is known as style P and is used to some extent'in large laundries. In such uses, however, it requires special preparation because of the difliculty extremely rapid and no sedimentis observ able. This very deslrableresult 1saccomplished by the admixture of the bluing with the borax. The latter exerts an action that may be mechanical or chemical or both, which induces a rapid dissolution of the particles of bluing so that a clear solution is obtained almost instantly. Hence no streaking. or discoloration of the clothing is possible. Furthermore, all souring of the clothing is avoided. In practice the clothin may be permitted to soak for a number 0 days and yet it will be found clean and sweet when removed. 4
I prefer to adhere to the percentages given, namely, 95 per cent. of borax a'nd five per cent. of blue, since these proportions secure the most favorable results. They may, however, be varied from within the invention.
What I claim is:
A laundry. bluing comprising approximately 95 per cent. of finely powdered borax mixed with approximately five per cent. of soluble Prussian blue.
