LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 26,295, date November 29, 1859. i
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, C. IV. RICHTER, of
. Madison, in the county of, Morgan and State ofGeorgia, have invented a new and Improved Lamp; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part-of.
this specification, in which Figure 1, is a sectional elevation of my invention. Fig. 2, is a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line as, m, Fig. 1. Fig. 8, is a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line y, y, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspending parts in the several figures.
The object of this invention is to obtain a lamp for burning the heavier grades of coal oil with a good illuminating flame.
The invent-ion consists in a novel means employed for adjusting or raising and lowering the wick within the wick tube, so that the wick is allowed to remain loose and free from pressure within the tube, thereby favoring the capillary ascent offthe ,viscid oil and lnsuring a proper supply of the same to the flame.
To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will proceed to describe it. e
A, represents the body and font of the lamp, which may be constructed in any of the known ways, and B, is the burner which is .screwed into the top of the font as usual. This burner B, is the one most generally used for burning coal oil and known as the Vienna burner it being supplied with three sets of perforations a, b, c, as shown clearly in Fig. 1, which supply the flame with air both at the inner and outer side.
of the cap 03.
The wick tube e, may be constructed and arranged as usual but the means employed for raising and lowering. it is different.
This device is formed of a short bar 7, which is slotted transversely as shown at f, and.
has a fulcrum pin 9, passing through the slot. At the inner end of the bar f, a toothed plate 1", is attached the form of which is shown clearly in 3. I11 the tube 6, and opposite the toothed plate 1, a slot s, is made, shown in Figs. 1, and 3. The bar f, projects through a slot 25, in the side of the burner and when the wick a, in the tube 6, is properly adjusted the bar f, is drawn outward so that the toothed plate wick is to be adjusted the; barf, isjshoved 7, will be free from ,the wick. This resultfi 1 is permitted on accountof the slot f, through which the fulcrum pin g, passes. Whenthe j j inward so that the platefr, will be in con-j tact with the wick andthe lattermay consequently be raised and lowered by operat-Q ing the bar f, on its fulcrum pin. Bythisf device the wick n, is not compressed as is the case where the usual toothed pressure wheels are employed and;consequentlythe}, j 1 ,oil is allowed to ascend freely up thefwick. I.
This is an essential feature ofthe. invention for the heavy oils are so viscid that a loose wick is required, any obstruction produced by pressure retarding thefascent of the oil l and preventing a proper ,su ply ofthe same.
to the flame.
the use of pressure rollersis,'that evenwhenf bearing slightly against the wick, they com- 1 i, press to a certain degree the; parts against which they are in contact, the intervenin p a parts being loose, and the flame issuppliedf unequally with oil the loose portion supply- Another di culty attending ing an excess over the compressed parts and: an uneven flame and one liable to smoke 1s the result. By my invention this ditficultyg is avoided for the wick. need; not beat all} compressed but merely picked up, {as with capillarity.
185 i a pin, without in the least injuring its? rated as shown at u and provided with a rinr 1 a, within whichthe base of the chimneyxb,
is fitted. This supplemental cap o, it will 1.
be seen, holds the chimney and at the same j 0 .1 It also}. adf mits of an enlargement of the. chimney. im-
time supplies the flame with an extra draft indicated by the red arrows.
mediately surrounding the flame renderin the same less liable to break than usual an also serving as a reservoir to keep the flame encompassed with a supply ofwarm oXygen to favor proper combustion; This ca f 1:, however has been prev1ously usedand does not form a part of this invention.
I do not claim as new many parts hereinl described as forming the 5 Vienna burner, I nor do I claim broadly a wick fitted loosely Within its tube, nor the supplemental cap v, arranged as to have a Certain degree of 1onbut,
gitudinal adjustment in relation with the I do claim as new and desire to secure by Wick n, for the purpose set forth.
Letters Patent- The employment or use of the wick a-djuster, formed of the bar f, provided With a toothed plate 9", at its inner end and so I CHAS. W. RICHTER. Witnesses:
