CAR-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 262,808, dated August 15, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS F. MGNAIR, of Dawson, in the county of Terrell, and in the State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in coupling-links for car-couplers; and it has for its objects to furnish certain means whereby cars having draw-heads arranged at difi'erent heights, as well as those having the draw-heads arranged in the same horizontal plane, may be conveniently coupled. These objects I accomplish by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section, showing two cars, having their draw-heads in the same plane, coupled together by my improved link; and Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of the link detached.
The letter A indicates the draw-heads of two cars, and B the coupling-pins, which are of the usual construction.
0 indicates the coupling-link. This is constructed in the form of a flat plate, 0, having a bent extension, 0, at one side, the horizontal portion of which is parallel, or nearly parallel, with one end of the plate 0, before mentioned. The end of the plate opposite the horizontal portion of the said extension, as well as the extension, is perforated, the said perforation being indicated by the letter E, for the passage of the coupling-pin. The opposite end of the plate 0 has a slot, F, formed in it, the said slot being rounded at one end, as shown. The slot permits the proper play of the link.
lVhen two cars having their draw-heads in the same horizontal plane are to be coupled the link is arranged as indicated in Fig. 1 ot' the drawings. When cars having their drawheads in ditt'erent horizontal planes are to be coupled the coupling-link is inverted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The coupling-link consisting of a flat plate and a bent extension having apertures for the coupling-pins, as described, and adapted to be applied substantially in the manner specified.
