My invention relates to improvements in belt pliers for cutting off lengths of round belts and forming end holes in the lengths for connection of the ends thereof together by bent wire hooks.
An important object of my invention is to eliminate in this class of pliers multiple pivotal connections for operating the jaws, also sliding engagement of jaw operating parts, both common in the parallel jaw type of pliers, all of the purpose of reducing friction and rendering operation of the pliers easier, with greater power exerted by closing of the jaws, by comparatively light pressure on thehandles of the pliers.
Another object is to provide in such pliers a single fulcrum, or pivot, for the jaws to reduce friction, together with a cutter blade arranged with respect to the pivot to cut round belts between the jaws with a shearing action.
Still another object is to provide in such pliers for arranging a cutter blade thereon in a manner to brace the jaws against relative lateral play and to similarly brace the handles.
Still another object is to provide in suchpliers for obtaining a better grip on the connecting hooks that can not be obtained with round belt pliers.
Still another object is to provide for piercing the belts Without punching out material causing weakening of the belt.
Other and subordinate objects, within the purview of my invention, together with the precise nature of my improvements will become readily apparent when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary view in side elevation of my improved pliers in the preferred embodiment thereof, the jaws being shown open;
Figure 2 is a similar view looking at the other side of the pliers;
Figure 3 is a view in edge elevation;
Figure 4 is a view in vertical transverse section taken on the line 44 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a similar view taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 1;
Figure 6 is a detailed view taken on the same line of Figure 1 as Figure 4 but showing the jaws closed and the parts drawn to a larger scale;
Figure 7 is a fragmentary view in plan of the gripping section of one of the jaws drawn to the same scale as Figure 6;
Figure 8 is a detailed view in vertical transverse section taken through the gripping sections 2 with the jaws closed and drawn to the same scale as Figure 7.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, my improved pliers comprise the usual pair of handles' I, 2 pivoted together by pivot pin 3 extend ing transversely through annular flat hubs 4, 5 on said handles I, 2, respectively, and from which a pair of straight jaws 6, I for the handles l, 2 extend forwardly in opposed relation for swinging about the pin 3 to close in parallel relation and open into angular relation by movement of the handles I, 2 toward and from each other. The jaws B, I, handles I, 2 and hubs l, 5 are straight sided preferably.
The jaws 6, I are formed immediately in front of the hubs l, 5 with a pair of opposed, transverse notches 8, 9 of semi-circular form for receiving'the round belt, not shown, for cutting ciT a length thereof. I
An oblong, rectangular cutting blade It is fitted flat against one side of the pliers over the pivot pin 3 and one hub 5 and which extends forwardly of said pin and hub alongside the jaw 6 and rearwardly of said pin and hub alongside the handle 2 associated with the jaw E, the arrangement being such that the forward portion of the cutting blade III closes one end of the notch 8 in the jaw 6, and is adapted to close the corresponding end of thenotch 9 of the jaw I when said jaw 6, I are closed. Corner screws II, I2 in the cutting blade I2 secure the same to the jaw 6 and to the handle 2. A front corner, longitudinal cutting edge section I3 on the cutting blade III is spaced clear of the notch 9 when the jaws 6, I are open, as best shown in Figures 1 and 2, so that the belt may be extended through said notch 9 between the same and the cutting edge section I3, when the jaws 6, I are open. As will be manifest, the cutting edge section l3 moves across said end of the notch 9 during closing of the jaws 6, I to cut with a shearing action.
Forwardly of the pair of notches 8, 9, a second pair of similar notches I4, I5 are formed in the jaws 6, I for receiving the belt therein during the piercing operation. A tapered awl I6 is suitably fixed in the jaw 6 in the common plane of the jaws 6, I and extends centrally through the notch I4 toward the jaw I. The awl I5 is spaced clear of the notch I5 when the jaws 6, 'I are open sufficiently to permit. a belt to be entered in the notch I5. A bore I1 is provided in the bottom of the notch I5 for receiving the awl I6 when the jaws 6. I close and after the awl has pierced the belt. The awl I5 is curved in an arc concentric to the axis of swinging movement of the jaws 3 6, I, which is to say the pivot pin 3, to facilitate piercing the belt without spreading the opening formed.
A belt guidin and holding plate I8 is fixed by screws I9 to one side of the jaw I, on the same side of the pliers as the cutting blade ID and opposite the notch I5 in said jaw I. The guiding and holding plate I8 has a circular opening 20 therein of the same radius as the notches I4, [5 and which is coaxial with the notch l5, and said plate 18 extends beyond the working face of the jaw I so that when the jaws 6, 1 are closed said opening 20 is coaxial to the pair of notches [4, I5.
Forwardly of the pair of notches I4, I5, the jaws E, I are provided on the working faces thereof with gripping sections 2|, 22 of transverse triangular teeth meeting edge to edge when the jaws G, 'l are closed, as shown in Figure 7, and said sections 21, 22 are provided, respectively, with alongitudinal central groove 23, 24 for a purpose presently seen.
In using the described pliers for cutting off lengths of belts, the belt is inserted, with the jaws t, 7 open, through the notch 9 from the side opposite the cutting blade I past the cutting section l3, the required distance, and th aws 6, l are then closed to cut off the desired length, the notch 8 accommodating half the belt when the laws 6, 1 are closed.
In piercing the belt, with the jaws 5, 7 open, the end to be pierced, as shown by broken lines in Figure 6, is passed through the notch I from the side opposite the guiding and holding plate 1 3 and threaded through the opening in said plate. The jaws 6, l are then closed to force the awl 15 through the belt and into the bore ll until the notches l4, l5 close on the belt.
The gripping sections 2i, 22 are for use in gripping and clamping a connecting hook for the belt extending longitudinally between the jaws 5, l to bend the hook, not shown, or otherwise handle the same as may be required.
As will be understood, the holding and guiding plate I 3 holds the pierced end of the belt to the jaw 1 in opening the jaws 6, 'l to withdraw the awl I 6. The awl l6 compresses the belt around the pierced hole, not shown, and does not remove material causing weakening of the belt.
As will also be apparent, the cutting blade i6 wipingly engages one side of the jaw 'l' and the associated handle I during opening and closing of said jaws and because of this feature and the described manner in which the cutting blade is attached, said blade braces the pliers against 4 relative lateral play of the jaws 6, I and also of the handles I, 2.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufiice to impart a clear understanding of my invention, without further explanation.
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible in modification, without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved for such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a round belt pliers, a pair of handles having flat hubs pivoted together, said handles having a pair of associated straight jaws extending from said hubs for swinging about said pivot into opening and closing relation by movement of said handles away from and toward each other respectively, said jaws having confronting semicircular transverse notches therein, the notch in one; jaw for receiving a round belt therein when said jaws are open, and the notch in the other jaw for accommodating the belt therein when said jaws are. closed, and a cutter blade fastened to one side of said other jaw, said blade closing one end of the notchin said other jaw and having a cutting edge forwardly of said pivot moving across the corresponding end of the other notch to cut the belt with a shearing action upon closing of said jaws, said blade extending along said other jaw and the associated handle and across the hub of said handle and being fastened to said handle in wiping engagement with the first mentioned jaw and its associated handle to brace the pliers against relative lateral play of said jaws and of said handles.
