Description

Jan. 27, 1953 J. KURRY FOLDING INFANTS CRIB Filed NOV. 17, 1948 Fig. 3.
Inventor John L. Kurry Patented Jan. 27, 1953 UNITED FOLDING INFANTS CRIB John L. Kurry, Albany, N. Y., assignor of fortynine per cent to Stanley E. Trimble, Watervliet,
Application November 17, 1948, Serial No. 60,471
1 Claim. 1
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in folding cribs for infants and more particularly to an easily portable crib which may be placed on a bed, automobile seat, or other temporary supporting structure to provide a safe and comfortable sleeping accommodation for an infant.
An important object of the invention is to provide a folding crib of light weight which may be easily carried in a carrying case and set up in position for use without the use of fastening devices of any character.
A further object is to provide a foldable traylike crib including a bottom of light weight substantially rigid material and a wall or rim of flexible material and which, when placed on a bed, sofa, or the like, utilizes the bed mattress or sofa cushion as the cushioning means for the infant occupying the crib.
A still further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction, which is neat and attractive in appearance, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view with parts shown in section.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken substantially on a line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view taken on a line 3-3 of Figure 1 and Figure 4 is a perspective view of a carrying case for the folded crib and with parts shown in section.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates generally a crib 0f traylike construction composed of a head section 6 and foot section 1. Each section includes a substantially U-shaped bottom 8 of cardboard or similar light weight, semi-rigid material connected to each other at their end portions by a flexible tape 9 to permit folding of the bottoms of the sections against each other in back to back relation.
Each section also includes a substantially U-shaped rim 10 formed of a flexible cover ll secured to the bottom 8 at its edges and having a soft filler [2 of suitable material. The ends of the U-shaped rims abut and are closed by a cardboard or other suitable semi-rigid wall l3 secured to the ends of the cover material as shown at M and the rims are reinforced at intervals by means of upstanding transversely positioned webs or partitions l5 of cardboard or the like placed in the filler and supported thereby.
The opposed U-shaped bottoms 8 and rims l0 of the head and foot sections form a substantially oval-shaped recess [6 in the bottom of which is removably placed or secured a rubber sheet I! to provide a water-proof protective cover for the bottom of the crib.
The outer corners of the head and foot sections may be out at an angle, as shown at l8.
In the use of the device, the head and foot sections are set up into a horizontal position and placed on a bed or other suitable supporting structure and n infant may then be placed in the recess I6 formed by the abutting rims of the crib sections. The infant lies on the bed with only the rubber sheet I! between the infant and the bed to thus protect the bed and to eliminate any hard or uncomfortable surface occupied by the infant.
The rims will prevent falling of the infant off the bed and thus safely confine the infant and the soft material of the filler and covering for the rims and the curved internal shape of the rims will rotect the infant from injury.
When the crib is not in use, the head and foot sections are folded back to back and may be placed in and easily carried in a flexible or other case shown at I9.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A folding crib comprising a pair of U-shaped rigid bottom members having the ends thereof disposed in registry with each other, means attached to the registering ends of said bottom members hingedly connecting said members to each other, abutment plates carried by the ends of each of said bottom members, a pair of flexible webs each having the sides thereof secured to the edges of said U-shaped bottom member, said webs being looped intermediate the sides thereof and a soft filler interposed between said web and said bottom members, the ends of each 5 of said webs being secured to said abutment plates.
