Application May 20, 15949, Serial No. 94,490
3 Claims.
My invention relates to hair-trimming lcombs of the type wherein means are provided to mount la razor blade on a front surface of the comb back Ifor ysliding movement into selected overlapping positions relative to the comb teeth so as to trim the hair by a combing operation.
' With the foregoing in View, itis an object of my invention to provide an improved hair-trimming comb of the class described.
A further object is to provide an improved hair-trimming comb of the class described which includes means f-or releasably and frictionally locking the razor blade inl a selected adjustable position relative to the comb teeth.
A further object is to provide an improved hairtrimming comb of the class described which includes an auxiliary lcomb having comb teeth, Ameans mounting the auxiliary comb on the rstmentioned comb with the teeth of the auxiliary comb extending oppositely to the teeth of the rst-mentioned comb, and means mounting the razor blade for adjustable overlapping movement -relative to the teeth of the auxiliary comb, and/or to the teeth of the first-mentioned comb. Other objects and advantages reside in the particular structure of the device, the structure 'of the several elements forming the Same, comloinations and sub-combinations of such elements, all of which will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art upon reference to the attached drawing in connection with the following speciflcation, wherein the invention is shown, described and claimed.
- In the drawing:
v Figure 1 is a front elevation of the comb ac cording to the invention;
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the line 3--3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary front elevation of the comb with the movable parts removed therefrom; l
. Figure 5 is a transverse vertical section-al view showing a slight modification and taken substantially on the plane of the line 5-5 of Figure 6;
Figure 6 is a plan View showing a modification;
Figure '7 is an inverted front elevational view of the modification of Figures 5 and 6, showing parts removed and parts broken away;
' Figure 8 is a perspective view of a part usable with the form of Figures 1 to 4, inclusive, apart from the rest of the structure; v
Figure 9 is a rear view of a razor-blade-ca-rrier apart from the rest of the structure;
Figure 10 is a perspective View of the carrier of Figure 9;
Figure 11 is a bottom plan view of a locking device for the carrier apart from the rest of the structure.
Referring specically to the drawing, wherein like reference characters have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts, I2 designates generally a pocket comb including a comb back I3 and a plurality of comb teeth I4 depending from the lower edge of the back. The front surface of the comb back I3 is formed with a rectangular recess I5 opening upwardly through the upper edge of the comb back. The upper edge of the comb back is recessed, as at I6,r to provide an upper edge portion defining the upper limits of the recess I5 centrally of the side walls thereof for a purpose to be apparent hereinafter.
As best seen in Figures 1, 2, 3 and 8, a plate I8 of rectangular form is adapted to be seated in the recess I5 in laterally-inwardly-spaced relation to the side walls of such recess. The plate I8 is formed with a pair of laterally-spaced sockets I9 adapted to seat on the studs Il extending forwardly from the floor of the recess I5, whereby to readily detachably mount the plate I8 in the recess. As best seen in Figures 2 and 3, the front surface of the plate I8 extends forwardly of the front surface of the comb back I3 and the front surfaces of the comb teeth I4 a short distance.
As best seen in Figures 9 and 10, a carrier 20 is provided for mounting a razor blade 2| on the front surface of the plate I8. The blade 2l is of the type having a pair of end tangs 22 extending laterally beyond the opposite ends of the upper and lower blade edges 23 and 24. The carrier 2E! is generally rectangular in form and slightly longer than the width of the plate I8. Likewise, the carrier 28 is provided with upper and lower rearwardly-directed lugs 25 and 26, respectively, at each end of the carrier. Such lugs 25 and 26 are adapted to slidably engage the opposite end edges of the plate I8, whereby to slidably mount the carrier on the plate with the blade 2| sandwiched therebetween. Also, it will be noted that the end tangs 22 of the blade 2| are interposed between the upper and lower pairs of lugs 25 and 26, whereby the blade isA readily detachably connected to the carrier for 0sliding movement therewith on the plate I8. As
aforesaid, the forward surface of the plate I8 extends forwardly of the front surface of the comb back I3, whereby the lower lugs 26 clear the front surface of the comb back to permit sliding of the carrier and its blade below the bottom wall 21 of the recess I5 so as to dispose the lower edge 24 of the blade in overlapping relation to the comb teeth I4, as clearly shown in Figure 3.
To maintain the blade 2| in a selected overlapped position relative to the comb teeth I4, means now to be described have been provided. Thus, the forward surface of the carrier 20 has a pin 28 fixed thereto and projecting forwardly therefrom. A button 29 is formed with a socket 30 on its rear face slidably receiving -the pin 28 therein, whereby to mount the button for forward and rearward sliding movement relative to the front surface of the carrier 20. An expansive spring 3| is interposed between the button 29 and the front surface of the carrier 20, wherebyto'load the button for forward movement relative to the carrier. A cover plate 32 is fixed to the combbackY I3 in any suitable manner. as by the screws or rivets 33. The cover plate 32 is disposed in overlying relation. to the carrier 20. Also, the cover plate 32 is formed with a veitically-extending dovetail wslot 34 into which the button 29 extends. Side edges 35 of the button 29 are complementary to the undercut. wallsof theslot v34 and rictionally engageable therewith undenthe .load of the spring 3|, whereby to frictionally lock the carrier in vertically-adjustedpositions in the slot 34. Thus, to adjust the. carrier 20, it is necessary only to press inwardly ,on the button 29 to release the sides 35 thereof. from the undercut side Walls of the slot 34, whereby `the carrier is 'freely vertically adjustable vso as to vary .the overlapping relation of the lower blade edge 24 with the comb teeth I4. Referring 4now to r'Figures 5, 6 and 7, a rectangular auxiliary comb 40 is there shown as being substituted for the plate I3. rlhe comb 40 is substantially the same Width as the plate I8 and has itsrear surface formed with rearwardlydirected sockets 4I receiving the studs II therein, whereby to readily detachably mount the auxiliary comb in the recess I5. As in the rstdescribed form of the invention, the end edges 42 of the auxiliary comb 40 provide a slidable engagement with the lugs and 26 to slidably mount the carrier 20 thereon. However, in this arrangement, the forward-surface of the auxiliary comb `4l) is substantially iiush with the forward surface of the comb back I3, whereby the lowermostlugs A26 engage the bottom wall 21 of the recess `I5'to limit downward sliding movement of the carrier in such recess. Also, it should be noted that the auxiliary comb 40 has upper and lower sets of teeth 43 and 44, respectively. As best seen in Figure '7, the lower teeth 44 are finer than the comb teeth I4, but are coarser than theupper teeth 43. Obviously, the auxiliary comb 40 may be reversed in the recess I5 to position the lower teeth 44 uppermost if desired. Likewise, as best seen in Figure 5, the carrier 20 is readily adjustable upwardly to vary the overlapping relation of the upper blade edge 23 relative to the upper comb teeth 43. Obviously. if desired, the thickness of the auxiliary comb 40 could be increased to equal that of the plate I8, whereby the carrier 2t would be downwardly-slidable into the same overlapping position relative to the -comb teeth I4, as in the first-described `form of the invention. Moreover,
while I have shown and described what is now thought to be the preferred I'orms of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of other Iorms and expressions. Consequently, I do not limit myself to the precise embodiments shown and described hereinabove except as hereinafter claimed.
