This invention relates to stands or holders used on vanities or hair dressing tables, and in particular a stand for holding bobby pins wherein the pins are positioned on a vertically disposed Web and means is provided at the ends of the Web for opening the pins as they are withdrawn therefrom.

The purpose of this invention is to provide a bobby pin holder from which pins may be withdrawn by one hand and in which the pins are opened over the end of a thumb as they are withdrawn from the holder.

Various types of holders have been provided for bobby pins, hair pins, and the like but with the closed type of pin and particularly bobby pins it is diflicult to withdraw a pin with one hand and with conventional holders of this type it is necessary to hold the holder with one hand as a pin is withdrawn with the other. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a base having a vertically disposed web with wedge shaped surfaces or portions at the ends of the web so that with the thumb positioned in a recess at the ends a bobby pin may be withdrawn with the first two fingers of the handwith the wedge shaped surface opening the pin and with the pin deposited on the end of the thumb with the arms thereof separated.

The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for forming a bobby pin holder whereby pins supported thereon are opened as they are withdrawn and from which pins are withdrawn by one hand.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved holder for bobby pins wherein the arms of pins are separated with both horizontal and vertical movement.

A further object of the invention is to provide an improved bobby pin holder which includes means for opening pins as they are withdrawn therefrom which is of a simple and economical construction.

With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a hair pin holder T-shape in cross section having a base with a vertically disposed web with wedge shaped surfaces having recesses in the ends provided on the surfaces at the ends of the web, with recesses in adjoining surfaces of the base and with a rib on one side of the upper edge of the web.

Other features and advantages of the invention will appear from the following description taken in connection with the drawings wherein:

Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved bobby pin holder.

Figure 2 is aside elevational View of the holder illustrating the positions of a thumb and fingers of a hand in the act of withdrawing a bobby pin from the holder.

Figure 3 is an end elevational view of the improved bobby pin holder showing a pin positioned on a wedge shaped surface at one end thereof.

Figure 4 is a cross section through the holder taken on line 4-4 of Figure 2.

Figure 5 is a similar section showing a rib on the upper edge of the web of the holder.

Figure 6 is a detail showing a sectional plan taken on line 55 of Figure 2 illustrating the shape of the wedge shaped surface on one end of the web and showing the end of a thumb positioned in the recess in the end of the wedge shaped surface.

Figure 7 is a similar section showing a bobby pin which is positioned on the intermediate part of the wedge shaped surface shown in Figure-6, withdrawn from the wedge shaped surface and positioned on the end of the thumb inserted in the recess.

Figure 8 is a side elevational View With parts roken away showing the wedge shaped surface at the end of the web of the hold-er with the parts as shown in Figure '7 wherein a pin has been withdrawn from the wedge shaped surface and is positioned on the end of a thumb the end of which extends into the recess in the end of the wedge shaped surface.

Figure 9 is an elevationa1 view looking toward the end of a thumb and showing a bobby pin positioned thereon with the pin in the position as illustrated in Figures 7 and 8.

Figure 10 is a detail illustrating the method of spreading the legs of a bobby pin with the bead or rib on the upper edge of the web.

Figure 11 is a cross section through the holder illustrating a modification wherein the holder is provided with an arcuate web.

Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the improved bobby pin holder of this invention includes a base I!) having a centrally disposed web I I extended upwardly therefrom with wedge shaped surfaces i2 and I3 on the sides of the ends of the web and with a rib M on one side of the upper edge of the web to retain the bobby pins on the Web.

The upper surface of the base 10 is provided with recesses l 5 and it on the sides of the web at one end and I1 and I8 on the sides of the web at the opposite end and, the ends of the wedge shaped surfaces formed on the ends of the web are provided with recesses l9 and 20 into which the end of a thumb, as indicated by the numeral 2! extends when the bobby pin, as indicated by the numeral 28 is withdrawn from the holder.

The wedge shaped surface l2 tapers from a point 22 where it blend-s into the surface of the web I I to a point 23 at the end of the holder and the wedge shaped surface l3 extends from a point 24 where it blends into the surface of the web, to a point 25 at the end of the holder.

In the modification illustrated in Figure 11 an arcuate web 26 extends upwardly from a base 21, similar to the base It and it will be understood that the ends of the web 25 may also be provided with wedge shaped surfaces corresponding to the wedge shaped surfaces I2 and 13 whereby bobby pins positioned, on the web are opened as they are withdrawn therefrom.

In the illustration shown in Figure 10 a bobby pin is withdrawn vertically from the web and as itpasses. upwardly with one leg bearing against a. surface of the web the upper end of the pin is extended toward one side whereby the bead I4 on the upper edge of the web forcesthe other leg of thepin outwardly, thereby opening the pin, as shown.

With the parts arranged in this manner bobby pins are placed over the web, as illustrated in Figure 2 and when it is desired to use the pins they are withdrawn, as illustrated in Figure 2 with the end of the thumb placed into one of the recesses IE3 or 20' and with the first two fingers of the hand placed over the pin and sliding through the recesses H and i8 and extended on opposite sides of the web I l the pin is withdrawn over the wedge shaped surface l3, as illustrated in Figures 6 and 7 with the fingers drawing the pin overthe end of the thumb where it is held until it is, inserted in the hair. By this means bobby pins are opened as they are withdrawn from, the holder and the pins are placed on the end of the thumb of a hand in which they are held.

The holder may be made of plastic, or any suitable material and with the base comparatively heavy, as illustrated in the drawing the holder will have sufficient stability to remain in position as pins are withdrawntherefrom by the thumb and fingers of a hand.

It will be understood that modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

What is claimed is:

1. A bobby pin holder comprising a base having a vertically disposed web with wedge shaped portions on the side surfaces of the ends of the web and with a bead on the upper edge of the web to retain the pins thereon and said wedge shaped portions being extended upwardly and outwardly of the plane of the web.

2. A bobby pin holder comprising a base having a vertically disposed web with wedge shaped portions on the side surfaces of the ends of the web and with a bead on the upper edge of the web, to retain thepins thereon and said wedge shaped portions being extended upwardly and outwardly of the plane of the web, said base hav- 2 ing recesses in the ends of the upper surface and positioned at thesides of the web to receive the first two fingers-of a hand as, the bobby pin is removed from, the web.

3. In a bobby pin, holder, the combination which comprises an elongated support, T-shape in cross section having a base with a web extended upwardly therefrom, said web having wedge shaped'surfaces on the sides of the ends thereof and recesses in the ends of the wedge shaped surfaces to receive the end of the thumb of a hand and said base having recesses in the upper surface of the ends and positioned on opposite sides of the web to receive the first two fingers of a hand as the bobby pin is removed from the web.
