2 Claims.
The object of this invention is to devise a novel applicator for applying a Cleaning solution or paint to a surface to be treated, and more particularly for applying paint of the water soluble type.
A further object of the invention is to devise a novel applicator which, when moved in one direction, applies the paint or cleaning solution to a surface to be cleaned or coated, and which, when moved in the opposite direction, smooths out the applied material.
A further object of the invention is to devise a novel applicator which maintains the paint or other material in a properly mixed condition and transfers it to a roll which is perferably arranged to revolve in one direction only.
A further object is to devise an applicator which will hold a substantial amount of material, which will be of light weight, and which can he easily cleaned.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as will hereinafter clearly appear, our invention comprehends a novel applicator.
It further comprehends a novel applicator having a Chamber to receive the material and in which a transfer roll and a coating roll are mounted in a novel manner, the coating roll being preferably of greater length than the transfer roll.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, i
we have shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment thereof which we have found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results. It is, however, to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and the invention is not limited to the exact arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of an applicator embodying our invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the rolls and their mounting, in detached position.
Figure 3 is a transverse section on line 3-3 of Figure 4.
Figure 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Figura 3.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings:
A container I, preferably of cylindrical contour, has a tubular handle 2. The ends of the container are closed and the top is cut out as at 3. rThe inner faces of the ends have fixed to them in any desired manner, for example by soldering, vertically disposed, U-shaped Channels 4, which form guides for a U-shaped bar 5 in which a mixing and transfer roll 6 and a coating roll 1 are mounted. A rod 8 fixed in any desired manner to the roll 5 has its free ends extending into apertures 9 in the sides of the bar In a similar manner, a rod or axle H) fixed to the roll 'I has its free ends extending into apertures I i in the sides of the bar 15.
In order to prevent the roll 'i from revolving in a Vreverse direction we provide a novel brake 12 in the form of an U-shaped rod having its ends deflected to form eyes [3 and having a lateral rod Ili having a diameter greater than the space between the rolls which will wedge between the rolls and prevent the roll 'l from turning in a reverse direction when the direction of movement of the applicator is reversed.
The roll 'I has a fabric cover |5, preferably having a pile surface, secured to it in any desired manner, for example by a suitable adhesive.
The roll 6 has apertures [6 in its ends and may have apertures ll in its side wall to provide for a more thorough mixing of the material being applied.
In order to prevent the brake being carried around by the roll l, a fixed stop IB is provided in the path of the brake.
The manner in which the applicator is used will now be apparent to those skilled in this art and is as follows:
The applicator is adapted to apply a coating or a Cleaning solution to a surface. Assuming that the solution has been placed in the container, the operator moves the roll l along and over the surface to be treated in a forward direction, the solution being transferred by the roll 5 to the roll l. When the direction of movement of the applicator is reversed, the lateral rod Hi of the brake E2 will bind between the rolls and prevent the revolution of the roll 1, so that the roll l serves to smooth out the paint or cleaning solution which has been applied.
The rolls and their mounting are inserted ci' removed from the container as a unit of structure, and by springing the sides of the bar 5, the rolls can be removed from the bar for cleaning.
By making the roll 'l longer than the roll the solution is prevented from collectng at the ends of the roll l.
There is no dripping of the solution when the applicator is used on ceilings or walls.
The brake acts as a scraper to remove excess material from the roll l'.
Having thus described our invention, what we I 3 claim' as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a paint applying device, a cylindrical container having a top opening and having vertical guide channels on the inner faces of the ends of the container, a roll mounting in the form of a U-shaped band, the sides of which are slidable in said channels, a transfer roll having trunnions rotatably mounted in the sides of said band and within said container, a coating roll rotatably mounted above the transfer roll in the sides of said band, extending Vthrough said top opening and contaeting atavll times the transfer roll, and a brake preventing the rotation of the coating roll in one direction, said brake comprising side portions pivotallyl mounted at their upper ends and connected at their lower ends by a lateral rod of greater diameter than the space between the rolls and riding on the transfer roll in close proximityrtotheficoating roll, whereby the coating roll when contacting'a vsurface is free to revolve in one direction bt prevented from 4 revolving in a reverse direction by the Wedging action of said lateral rod between the rolls when the eoatingrroll is revolved in a reverse direction.
2. The construction defined in claim 1, wherein the side portions of the brake are mounted on the trunnions of the coating roll.
