The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in tools for removing automobile door handles, as well as other types of handles held on a spindle by a spring clip.
An important object of the invention is to provide a tool for this purpose of the plier type, and including a spring clip releasing jaw engaged behind the door handle and a handle supporting and holding jaw whereby both the spring clip and handle are held by the tool after the handle is removed to prevent loss of the clip.
Another object is to provide a tool of this character of simple and practical construction, which is efficient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the de tails of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure l is a perspective view showing the tool in position for removing a door handle;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the tool;
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the handle showing the tool in position thereon; and,
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on a line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates the tool generally and which comprises a pair of handles 6 and l pivoted to each other adjacent their front ends in crossed relation, similar to the handles of a pair of pliers, by a pivot pin 8.
The front end of handle 6 is formed with a laterally upwardly curved, hook-shaped jaw 9, and the front end of handle I is formed with a downwardly extending flat jaw l0. Jaw I is positioned slightly forwardly of jaw 9.
In the operation of the tool, jaw 9 is placed behind a door handle H, under the circular fiat flange or plate I2 at the inner end of the handle, and jaw I0 is positioned behind the flange or plate l2 to enter the annular slot I3 in the rearwardly projecting sleeve 14 of the handle to engage the curved rear portion l of a wire spring clip [6 used for locking the sleeve I4 to the spindle I! of the door locking mechanism and to which the handle is attached.
Spring clip I6 is formed with inwardly projecting locking ends I8 engaged in notches 19 in the spindle I! and pressure against the curved portion I5 of the clip by jaw I0 spreads the locking ends I8 outwardly to release the latter from the notches to release the sleeve I 4 from the spindle and permit removal of the door handle.
Jaw 9 holds the door handle, after being released, while jaw I0 holds clip H5 in the slot in the sleeve Id of the door handle to prevent loss of the clip.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the construction, operation and advantages of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. An automobile door handle tool comprising a pair of handles pivoted to each other in crossed relation, and a pair of jaws at the front ends of the handles, one of said jaws comprising a hookshaped finger disposed laterally of said handles and projecting from side thereof adapted for en gaging behind a door handle to fit under the inner end thereof, and the other of said jaws including a flat end portion disposed transversely of said handles and extending downwardly behind the door handle in opposed relation to the first named jaw and adapted to engage a wire spring locking clip with pressure, thereby releasing the same which in turn allows the removal of the handle.
2. An automobile door handle tool comprising a pair of handles pivoted to each other in crossed relation, an angular jaw at the front end of one of said pair of handles including a relatively thin flat end disposed transversely of said handles, and a hook-shaped jaw at the front end of the other of said pair of handles and disposed transversely of said other of said pair of handles at one side thereof, said jaws being opposed and said angular jaw adapted for engaging a wire spring door handle locking clip to release the same while said hook-shaped handle is held behind the door handle and gripped thereby.
