UNITED STATES "PATENT OF ICE.
CHARLES KNIGHT, OF LAKEVILLE,NEW YORK.
GATE.
tit SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,858, dated August 1, 1882.
Application filed May a, 1882. No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, OHARLns B. KNIGHT, of Lakevillc, in the county of Livingston and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to swinging gates that may be adjusted vertically, and has forits object to provide a simple, durable, inexpensive, and efljcient gate.
To this end it consists in certain improvements in the construction and operation of the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectionalview, and Fig. 3 a detail view.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A designates an upright end post, to which is hinged a swinging bracket, B, as shown. The latter consists of an end piece, 0, having an upwardly-inclined arm, D, extending from its bottom, and a cross-brace, E, extending from the top of the arm to the top of the post.
F is a vertical side piece, connected to the top of arm D by a cross-piece, G, and H is a roller journaled between the side F and arm D.
A vertical strip, I, is secured to the end piece,(), of the swinging bracket by means ofa cross-piece or block, J, at the top and bottom, and K is a roller journaled between the end piece, 0, and the strip 1. The latter is made removable by means of nuts and bolts, or other suitable means, for purposes that will be presently described.
L is an upright post, consisting of two parfilel pieces, M M, connected by cross-pieces O designates the gate, which consists of uprights P P, between which are secured the longitudinal rails Q, that are equidistant from each other, so that the space R between them will be of a uniform height.
S is a longitudinal horizontal strip secured along the top of the gate.
To adjust the gate on theswinginlg bracket it is only necessary to remove the strip I and place the gate, with the roller K, between its rails. The side piece, F, is also passed between the rails of the gate, when the latter will drop down between the upwardly-projecting edge of piece F and the projecting end T of arm D. The projecting edges U of the horizontal top rail, S, of the gate rest on the tops of posts M M when closed, and also on the topsof pieces 0 and I, thus relieving the arm D and brace E from undue strain, and the space between the different longitudinal rails Q being uniform, the piece F may be adjustedbetween any of them, so as to lower and clevate the gate, as desired, and adapt it to use in snowy weather, and for the passage of small animals only. When closed the projecting ends of the rails Q rest on the cross-pieces N N connecting strips M M.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood. It is simple, compact, and durable, and-its different parts are relieved from undue strain by the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts. The gate in operation slides back on the rollers H and K, and may then be turned on the swinging bracket.
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, withthe end piece, 0, of
the supporting bracket or crane, of the strip I, removably secured to the same by bolts and nuts, one of which passes through and secures a separating-block, J, and another having journaled thereon a roller, K, whereby the parts may be readily separated, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. KNIGHT.
