4 Claims. 1
This invention relates to a uniform cap having a frame whereon may be fitted a removable cover. More particularly the present improvements are concerned with a frame which is molded from plastic material with special provision for support at the front of a grommet over which the cap cover is removably fitted, and for certain other features as will hereinafter be disclosed in detail. A disclosure of this invention has heretofore been made in my pending application filed January 19, 1949, Serial No. 71,749, now Patent No. 2,555,348, of which this case is a division.
A uniform cap embodying the improvements of this invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings Wherein Figure l is a View in perspective of the present cap frame together with the visor and grommetsupporting head that is formed integral there'- with;
Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the cap; and
Fig. 3 is a detail in section, taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The cap illustrated in all the figures is conventional in that it comprises an endless frame in the form of a flexible band I I5 having outstanding beads H6 and II? extending along its upper and lower edges. According to the present invention this frame is molded from some suitable plastic material having properties which are specially adapted for its intended purpose. Among these is lightness, flexibility, and resilience to a considerable degree. A visor I20 formed integrally with the band is provided at the front, being arched and inclined downwardly in accordance with usual practice. The lower bead IE1 is shown as terminating at spaced points where it joins with the visor (see Fig. 1).
As shown in the drawings, the frame band carries at each side a fitting in the form of a sleeve I22 having a flange I23 from which a plurality of prongs I26 are axially extended for insertion through the frame band and then for clinching upon the inner face thereof at I21. The sleeves so made and applied to the band are anchored fixedly in place so as to receive the threaded shanks of buttons I24 which may be employed to secure the ends of a strap I25 which extends across the front of the cap immediately above the visor (see Fig. 2).
At this front portion the frame band is provided with an upwardly and forwardly extending head I29 which is desirably formed integral with the frame and bowed in conformity therewith. This head is formed centrally with an elongated receive a cover having a top: I415 which is fitted over the grommet I33and is distended thereby, the cover including a band I46 which vfitsxaround the frame '5. At the front an emblem I141 is secured in place as by passing its shank I48 through an opening in the cover and-through the slot 34 in thestay, a nut I49 beingthen-applied to the shankto complete the locking of the em-' blem in place.
The sweat band I49 is aifixed to the frame band by a thin fiexible fin I31 which is integral therewith and protruded beyond its bottom edge portion, the fin being stitched at IM to the sweat band I40 (see Fig. 3). Initially while the band is being affixed in place, it may depend below the frame, but when the connection has been completed the sweat band together with the fin is then folded up into the frame H5 to lie therewithin and parallel thereto as indicated by the dotted lines in this figure.
The cap as illustrated is distinctive in that its frame is produced from a plastic material with an upstanding head integral therewith for supporting the cap cover grommet, and an arched visor likewise integral with the frame to extend forwardly and downwardly therefrom at the front. Such a visor need not be covered with fabric or other material, since the material chosen for the frame-visor combination may be sufiiciently attractive in appearance to be fully acceptable when exposed to view. Furthermore, the plastic frame herein described embodies the improved features of threaded sockets which are anchored immovably in place so they cannot become lost, and a flexible plastic fin to which the sweat band may be sewed.
It will thus be observed that I have reduced considerably the number of parts Which require assembly and handling, thereby reducing and simplifying the operations required in manufacture of the cap as Well as the Weight thereof.
I claim:
1. A uniform cap including a flexible cover, an endless frame provided with a visor at the front and having a head upstanding therefrom supporting the cover at the top and provided at its rear face below its upper end with a rearwardly extending ledge having an upstanding lug arranged in spaced relation with said upstanding head, a distending grommet for the flexible cover supported at the front on the ledge and maintained in contact with the upper portion of the head by said upstanding lug, the frame, the visor and the upstanding head with said ledge and lug being integral and forming one unit of flexible plastic material.
2. A uniform cap including a flexible cover, an endless frame having a visor at the bottom edge of its front and provided at the top edge thereof with an upstanding head supporting the flexible cover at the top, a sweat band arranged within the frame on the inner face thereof, and a relatively thin endless flexible plastic fin integral with the bottom edge of the frame and having a reverse bend extending upwardly and lying adjacent the inner face of the frame and said plastic fin secured to the lower edge and supporting the sweat band, the frame, the visor, the upstanding head and the fin being integral and forming one unit of flexible plastic material and said fin initially depending from the frame to facilitate the attachment of the fin to the sweat band.
3. A uniform cap including a flexible cover, an endless frame provided with a visor at the front and having a head upstanding therefrom supporting the cover at the top and provided at its rear face below its upper end with a rearwardly extending ledge having an upstanding lug arranged in spaced relation with said upstanding head, a distending grommet for the flexible cover supported at the front on the ledge and maintained in contact with the upper portion of the head by said upstanding lug, a sweat band arranged within the frame on the inner face thereof, and a relatively thin endless flexible plastic fin integral with the bottom edge of the frame and having a reverse bend extending upwardly and lying adjacent the inner face of the frame and said plastic fin secured to the lower edge and supporting the sweat band, the frame, the visor, the upstanding head and the fin being integral and forming one unit of flexible plastic material and said fin initially depending from the frame to facilitate the attachment of the fin to the sweat band.
4. A uniform cap including a flexible cover, an endless frame having a visor at the bottom edge of its front, a sweat band arranged within the frame on the inner face thereof, and a relatively thin endless flexible plastic fin integral with the bottom edge of the frame and having a reverse bend extending upwardly and lying adjacent the inner face of the frame and said plastic fin secured to the lower edge and supporting the sweat band, and said fin initially depending from the frame to facilitate the attachment of the fin to the sweat band.
