' CAMP STOVE.
Patented July 25 I l p/E: 171 E E! If Jam lJvi'faflou/e UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL J. MCDOWELL, E BOSTON, MASsAoHUsETTs, ASSI NOE T0 HIM- SELF AND JOSIAH KNIGHT, 0F SAME PLACE.
CAM P-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,621, dated July 25, 1882.
Application filed January 23, 1882. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. MoDoWELL, of Boston, of the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Camp-Stoves, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of my improved oven, with one of the covering, sections removed. Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section through the same at the line ac xof Fig.1; and Fig. 3, aview in perspective of the fire-box and outer casing of the oven, with a portion of the front side broken away to show the interior.
It is'the object of my invention to render the oven portable by so constructing its parts that they may be packed in a small compass for transportation, and readily and securely united where required for use, when the oven is surrounded on all sides and at the top and bottom with a continuous flue, having also a provision for equalizing the heat at all parts within the oven; and to this end my invention consists, first, in the combination of the sectional oven provided with an opening and flange, as hereinafter described, with the sectional outer case and a separate sleeve adapted to such case and flange; second, in the combination of the outer casing and oven, constructed in sections and arranged and provided with a flange and sleeve, as described, with one or more shallow pans arranged in the oven and upon its bottom and charged or to be charged with sand, all being as hereinafter specificallyexplained.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, 1 will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
The outer casing of my oven is composed of metal sheets, made in any desired number of sections. In the drawings the side pieces are continuous and have flanges a a a a turned inward at each corner, to which hooks 1 1 are securely attached, while the front plate, B, and the rear plate, 0, are of equal length and made plain at their ends to rest within the flanges and complete a square form. The front and rear plates carry staples 2 2 at their corners, to receive the hooks 1 l, and the front, rear, and
side plates carry a suflicient number of books,
3 3 3, to fasten them securely to the bottom plates, which carry the staples 4 4 4 in or on the continuous flange, forall the bottom plates, 5 D D, are flanged on their outer edges, and these flanges hold the sides and ends in a vertical position, and when the top sectional plates, E, are also flanged and placed in position and securely fastened by hooks and staples or oth- 6o er fastenings, the whole forms the complete outer casing, to receive the oven, sustain the fire-box and chimney, and allow a free fluespace all around the oven. The fire-box F is placed in the center, or nearly so, of the bottom plates of the oven, and is held securely there by its flanges 5 5, which are turned all around its top or upper edge. The fire-box may be simply perforated at the bottom to permit the escape of the ashes, or it may carry grate-bars, and it may be plain or corrugated on its sides and use refractory lining material,
if desired. A door on one side of its sides permits the introduction of the fuel, and a register in the door may be made to regulate the draft.
The oven G, like the outer case, is made of any suitable sheet metal, and in sections, 6 6 6, in Fig. 2, and these sections are securely fastened together whenit is desired to use the oven in the same manner as described for fastening the plates of the outer case. The oven has an opening, 7, in front, surrounded by a sleeve,
8, that is received in a flange, 9, that is fastened to the front plate, B, which also contains 8 5 a door, 10, to give access to the interior of the oven.
When the sectional plates that constitute the oven are placed within the case and supported by stools or trestles 11 at its corners 0 the sleeve 8 is pushed into the flange 9 until the flue-space between the oven and case is equal on all sides. The top sections now can be placed in position, fastened together and to the side and end plates, and when the pipeor 5 chimney 12 is placed in its position on the center of the top plate the oven is ready for use,
and may be set on feet 0 0 0 in any desired spot on the instant, or simply by resting two rods or bars of iron on wooden forks a proper mo distance apart, and so arranged as to give the outer case a secure and horizontal support.
To prevent the direct action of the flame and heat from the fire-pot from heating the bottom plates of the oven too rapidly, I cover the whole bottom of the oven with sectional metal pans 13 13, and fill these with sand or any refractory material, and thus prevent the rapid burning of the bottom plates and distribute the heat of the oven so as to nearly equalize the temperature within when in use.
It is obvious that such ovens may be made of any desired capacity, and that they are, as experience has proved, of great importance to the military service, for alter a baking for a regiment has been finished in the morning the sections of the case and oven can be separated in a few moments and packed in a small space, loaded, and transported, so as to keep up with the troops, and readily be replaced to bake for their supper.
What I claim as my invention, and desire 20 to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the sectional oven G, provided with the openings 7 and flange8, With the sectional oven-case and the separate sleeve 9, adapted to such case and flange, all being arranged and constructed substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the outer casing and oven constructed in sections, and arranged and provided with the flange 8 and sleeve 9, as described, with one or more shallow pans, 13, arranged in the oven and upon its bottom and charged or to be charged with sand, as explained.
