Description

in Model.) E. LUFKIN.
LANTERN HOLDER.
No. 261,618. Patented Jul 25, 1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN LUEKIN, OF MONROE, MAINE, ASSIGNOR E ONE-HALF TO EDMUND H. NEALLEY, 0E sAME PLAoE.
LANTERN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,618, dated July 25, 1882.
Application filed May 23, 1882. (No model.)
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of lantern-holders made from wire or like material, provided withproper clasps for holding the lantern, and having a frame of said wire extending upward upon each side of the center of the lantern at its rear, adapted to support an arm or yoke for securing said frame and attached lantern in the situation desired.
An example of this class of lantern-holders is described in the Letters Patent No. 234,045, issued to me and to Edmund H. Nealley, (assignor of one-half,) November 2, 1880, though I do not limit myself to the construction of the frame therein shown in respect to those parts not affected by the present invention. In this 0 patent, it will be observed upon examination,
the upper ends of the wire frame 0, extending upward upon each side of the center and behind the lantern, are disconnected at the top, the result being that in' consequence of 5 the flexible nature of the wire the frame lack the desirable stability.
My present invention and improvement is designed to remedy this; and it consists in conuectin g the upper end of said frame, or others 0 ofsimilar construction in this particular, by a cross-bar, which may be entirely distinct from the other parts of the frame, or form a part thereof, or of its adjuncts performing other functions besides those of a conuecting-bar,the 5 object being to connect the upper ends of the frame at or near their extremities, so as to give stability thereto, and also to serve as a handle,
whereby the lantern may be carried in situations where a rigid handle is preferable to the jointed bail commonly used.
In the drawing annexed the upper part only of the frame of the lantern-holder is shown,
. this onlybeing necessary to illustrate my present invention. At 1) b are shown the sides of the frame 0, referred to.
A shows the cross-bar, uniting upper ends of the frame 0, near its extremity, while at the same time it serves as a rigid handle, as aforesaid, by which the attached lantern may be carried.
The cross-bar A, as here shoun, f0] ms a part ofa wire, cl, which assists in sevurin g the frame to the lantern by means not necessary here to be described, as they form the subject of another application now on file in the Patcut Office; but, as before stated, I do not limit myselfby defining the functions a hich may be performed by the cross-bar a in addition to those herein described, the gist of my invention being to unite the upper ends of said frame in such a manner as to confer stiffness to said frame and to serve as a rigid handle for carrying the lantern, the latter being, however, a secondary consideration.
What I claim as my invention is- In a lantern-holder of that class made from wire or like material, provided with proper clasps for holding the lantern, and having a frame of said wire extending upward upon each side of the vertical center of said lantern, the cross-bar A, uniting the upper ends of said frame, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 19th day of 8 May, 1882.
. EDWIN LUFKIN.
