signor to Hartford National Bank and Trust Company, Hartford, Conn., as trustee Application July 1, 1946, Serial No. 680,571 In the Netherlands November 4, 1942 Section 1., Public Law 690, August 8, 1946 Patent expires November 4, 1962 s claims. `(C1. 311-43) There has already been proposed -a cutting plate for a dry-shaving apparatus whereby the capacity of the apertures of letting through the hairs and the skin is adjustable so that it is possible to adapt the shaver to any growth of hair' and to any degree of suppleness of the skin.
Another object of the invention is to render possible adaptation to the growth of hair and to the thickness of skin without any need of performing any manipulation on the cutting plate itself.
According to the invention, in the case of a cutting plate of a dry-shaving apparatus which exhibits apertures of different sizes, the large and the small apertures are grouped for this purpose in different running surfaces for the cut ting member. This creates the possibility of utilizing different interchangeable cutting members which each cooperate with a group of apertures of a certain size which may be considered as ideal as possible for a determined growth of hair and for determined properties of the skin. Sincev the other groups of apertures are provided in one or more other running surfaces, they are not swept by the cutting member chosen and therefore take no part in the cutting operation.
It follows from the above that the number of groups of apertures also determines the number of possibilities of adaptation.
For a better understanding it may furthermore be mentioned here that a group may comprise only a single slit-shaped aperture.
For a further increase of the shaving capacity, it is possible to provide additional smaller apertures in the running surface of a group of apertures, by which means the shaving operationis accelerated.
In one embodiment of the invention the apertures consist of slits of decreasing, preferably of continuously decreasing width.
The apertures which take no part in the shaving operation should preferably be closed'since it has been found that comparatively'thick hairs which enter into these apertures are frequently clamped therein, causing the sensation of scratching. The apertures may be closed, for example, by covering them with the aid of an extremely thin removable cover plate provided so as to be slidable or rotatable. l
It should be noted however, that when the comparatively large or small apertures are used in the shaving operation, the following distinction is observed. When the comparatively small apertures are used, the larger ones should be covered, but when the comparatively large apertures are used, the smaller apertures may continue to take part in the shaving operation unless, compared with the hair thickness of the person Who shaves himself, the dimensions of the smaller apertures are so small that even vif they cooperate with a cutting member the hairs may be clamped in the slits Which are too narrow for them.
Although it is possible each time to use different cutting members separately for each group of apertures, it is advisable, according to the invention, to utilize a single cutting member which has cutting edges located in separate running surfaces of different dimensions.

Fig. 1 shows a cutting plate I of constant thickness having apertures 2 and 3 of different sizes which are grouped in different running surfaces 4 and 5 respectively for the cutting member. In the lateral elevation in Figure 6 the reciprocating cutting member is denoted by 6; its teeth 'l cooperate with running surfaces 4 provided with large apertures 2. The running surfaces 5 take no part in the shaving operation since between the teeth 'l the cutting member is provided with a continuous groove. Persons having a thin and supple skin which is unsuitable for the large apertures 2 may take use of the running surfaces 5 which are provided with small apertures by turning the cutting member 6 through 180, as is indicated at 8, since the running surfaces and cutting edges which in both cases cooperate with one another are their reflected images.

Sincethe apertures which are not operative may exert a; scratchingieffectpntheyhairs ywhich have not yet been cutoi, it is advisablel to cover these apertures with the aid of the cutting member itself. Such a cutting member is denoted in Figures '7 and 8 by I9. In the `position shown, which corresponds to the position of the cutting member 6 in Fig. 6, the teeth I0 cooperate with the apertures 2 provided inthe running'surfaces 4 Whereas the apertures 3'arecovered by anuninterrupted second running surface which consists in itself of two tracks I2 andwhichare flush with the level of the running surface vofV the cutting edges Il which are present. .This cutting member may also be used, as illustrated'in the lateral elevation of Fig. 6, in the position obtained by turning it through an angle of 180.
In Fig. 9 the invention has been applied to a .cuttingplateior-.a rotary cuttingmember. It may furthermore be mentioned that, while .payingregard tothat Awhich has beenmentioned in this respect in 'tl-iey preamble of the specicationfitiis advisable'. to construct the cutting. member for the plate shown inrFig.9. in such a mannereas shown *.in Fig.v 12 so that the one set of cutting edgeswhichfcooperates with the smaller .apertures :isproVided -With an additional circular 1running=surface-22 `whereas vthe other set of cutting edges is widened as indicated at 23 to such :an extent f that Ait -sweeps over the two running surfaces -|3vand i4 :with-theresult that the capacity is'raisedI tof its maximum.

A cutter head for dry shaving apparatus, comprising an annular cutting plate having a rst annular running surface and a second annular running surface concentric to said rst surface, said rst running surface being provided ranged on the opposite side of said support portion and arranged nearer to the axis of rotation than said rst series of segments so as to engage said second running surfaces, said rst and second series of cutter segments selectively engaging either said first running surface in one position of said cutting member or second running surface in the reversed position of said cutting member.
