The apparatus of the'present invention is designed for use in performing a step in the end lasting of shoes by the use of an end-lasting machine, the latter being of any desirable or conventional type. For convenience in description, the operation is herein outlined as applied to the cement lasting of the toe portion of a shoe, but without limitation to this specific use of the apparatus. Desirably the portable fluid container and associated parts of the present apparatus is so supported that the operator may apply it to the shoe without being obliged to sustain its entire weight, although with sufficient freedom of movement to enable it to perform its desired function. However, it is not essential that the device be thus supported, since it may be entirely free from other parts and during intervals between successive uses may be rested upon any suitable support.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, there is provided a stand I having a heavy base B, which may be a casting, and which may be bolted to the floor in convenient proximity to the end-lasting apparatus. A vertical rod or length of rigid tubing 2 is fixed in the base B and at a convenient height is provided with a fixed collar 3 which forms a support for a collar 4 which is rotatable on the rod 2, and to which is secured one end of rigid arm 5 extending substantially horizontally to the desired distance from the rod 2 and which, as here illustrated, is bent at 6 to provide the upwardly inclined brace member 7, whose upper end is secured to a second collar 8 which turns freely on the rod 2. The arm 5 constitutes the immediate support for the adhesive-applying device 9 of the present invention which, as here illustrated, is suspended from the arm 5 by means of an extensible coiled spring [0. This spring is of sufficient length and flexibility so that, although sustaining the weight of the dispensing device when the latter is notin use, nevertheless permits the dispensing device to be moved into operative relation to a shoe disposed in the lasting machine in readiness tohave theupstanding toe portion of the lasting margin wiped down onto the insole.
The applying device 9 is here shown (Fig. 2) as comprising a length of cylindrical tubing ll, screw-threaded at its upper end for the reception of an internally screw-threaded annulus l2 which, when assembled with the member H, forms, in effect, a radial flange at the upper end of the latter. Since thermoplastic adhesive is the type of adhesive best suited foruse in the lasting operation, by reason of its powerful adhesion and quick setting characteristics, itis desirable to provide for heating the contents of the chamber l9. For this purposethe bottom member 14 is provided with one or more cavities for the reception of electrical heating units 53 (Fig. 3) which may be supplied with current'through flexible conductors from any suitable supply. Preferably, although not necessarily, the supply of heat maybe autom-atically controlled by a thermostat device 54' secured to the base I 4 and which is designed automatically to maintain a substantiallyconstant predetermined temperature within the chamber-l9.
A' slightly modified and preferred construction is-illustrat'ed in Figs. 6 to12, inclusive. In this arrangement the bottom member M has a projeeting portion which extends further from the wall of the container than the foot or nozzle I5 shown-in the previous figures, the foot or nozzle proper (I 5?) being connected tothe'bottom- M by a relatively narrow neck portion N. This ar rangement may be more convenient to use, in

Having placed the delivery foot or. nozzle upon the insole and within the upstanding lastingmargin at the toe of the shoe, theoperator actuates the'finger piece 52 thereby admitting compressed air to the chamber [9. Assumingthat there is within the chamber IS a body of hot fluid, thermoplastic adhesive, and that this liquid adhesive fills the passages l8 (or [80) and the chamber within the heated delivery foot, the opening of the valve 38 admits a charge of compressed air into the container which immediately raises the pressure of the liquid in the chamber within the dispensing foot to a point such that the valve 23 (or 23!!) automatically opens and allows a portion ofadhesive to be forced outwardly through the U- shaped orifice thereby depositing on the surface of the insole S a gob G of adhesive, Fig. 13, which is substantially U-shaped in contour. "This gob of adhesive lies close to the outer edge of the insole, following the contour of said edge, the amount of adhesive constituting this gob depending upon the length of time which the operator holds the finger piece 52 retracted. Substantially as soon as he releases the pressure from the finger 52, the valve device 23 (or 230) automatically cuts ofi communication between the chamber within the dispensing foot or nozzle and the orifice so that the delivery of adhesive ceases. The operator may lift the dispensing foot directly up from the insole if he so desire, thus leaving the adhesive in the substantially U-shaped form shown in Fig. 13. On the other hand, if he so desire, he may move the dispensing foot or nozzle rearwardly while keeping it in contact with the insole, with the result that the original U-shaped gob of adhesive is'spread rearwardly to-form anarea A (Fig. 14) of greater or lesser extent, depending upon the distance to which the foot is drawn rearwardly along the insole while in contact with the latter. As soon as the dispensing ,and spreading operation has been completed, the operator releases his grasp on the handle 59 and the spring [0 immediately resumes its function of suspending the device from the supportingstand, thus leaving the operator free to use both hands in the final operation of wiping in the toe portion of the lasting margin.
Since the horizontal width of the dispensing orificeis determined by the dimensions of the plates and H3, respectively, and since there plates are removable, it is possible to provide plates of diiferent sizes for alternative use under different conditions, and which may be substituted one for another by the operator thereby to vary the size of the delivery orifice in accordance with the character of the work and in accordance with the type of adhesive employed.
. By'the'use of this apparatus, the adhesive is kept enclosed until it is to be dispensed, thus avoiding waste of adhesive such as occurs when it is kept in an open vessel; only so much adhesive isdelivered at any one time from the con tainer as is requisite for cementing a single shoe so that there is no waste from dripping adhesive on its way from the container to the shoe as customarily occurs when a brush is employed as the applying means; there is noprobable chance of daubing the upper 0f the shoe with adhesive or of spilling adhesive on the lasting machine or on the fioor; the thermoplastic adhesive is kept at the proper temperature and without substantial waste of heat and exactly the'proper amount of adhesive is applied to each shoe and at the desired point without requiring any particular skill onthepart-of the operator.
While certain desirable embodiments of the invention have been herein disclosed by way of example, it is to be'understood that the invention is broadly inclusive of any and all other modifications falling withinthe scope of the appended claims. k

Apparatusfor use in applying adhesive to the marginal portion of a shoe insole as a step in the toe lasting operation, said apparatus comprising a portable container for fluid adhesive, the container comprising a bottom of heat conducting material having a'chamber therein, an electrical heating unit housed within said chamber and which is o erative to heat the bottom and the adhesive within the container, the bottom comprising a delivery-foot having an undersurface de signed to rest upon the toe portion of the insole, and a forward edge: so curved that it may be fitted within the upstandi'nglasting margin of the'shoe upper'at the the end of the latter, said foot having a narrow delivery orifice of substantially U-shape inits undersurface. means defining a passage for conveying adhesive from the container to said orifice, means, including a manually actuable valve. for adm tting compressed air from a supply to the container thereby to discharge adhesive through the ori'flce.

In comb nat on in a ratus desi ned to apply adhesive'to he toe portion of the insole of a shoe pre'oa -red for last ng, a foot having a substantially fiat under surface designed to rest upon the toe portion of the insole and having a curved forward ed e of a contour ap roximating that of the end of the, insole, said foot having a delivery orifice, a portable, airtight container for fluid adhesive, means for conducting adhesive from the container to the orifice, means for delivering air from under pressure from a supplyto the interior of the container, a valve for controlling the admission of compressed air from said supply to the container. and a, finger-actuable trigger for opening the valve.
12. In apparatus of the class described, in combination, an airtight, portable container having a handle for use in manipulating it, a rigid foot projecting from the container near its bottom, said foot having an interior chamber which communicates with the interior of the con tainer, the foot having a substantiallyfiat under surface designed to rest upon the toe portion of the insole, said foot having a single, substantially U-shaped delivery orifice in its underside through which adhesive may be discharged from the container, a finger-actuable lever pivotally supported by the handle, and a part operable by the lever for unseating the valve thereby to allow compressed air from a supply to enter the container so as to eject adhesive from the orifice.

In combination, in apparatus designed to apply adhesive to the toe portion of the insole of a shoe prepared for lasting, a portable container for adhesive, said container having a bottom provided with a projecting foot having a substantially fiat under surface designed to rest upon the toe portion of the insole and having a curved, forward edge of a contour approximating that of the toe end of the insole, the container bottom having a passage leading from the interior of the container to the foot, the foot having a delivery orifice in its undersurface, a valve casing mounted on the container, a normally closed valve therein, means for connecting the valve casing to a supply o com ressed air, a handle for use in manipulating the container, and a finger-operated trigger conveniently arranged for engagement by the finger while grasping the handle thereby to open the valve and admit compressed air to the container.

In apparatus designed to apply adhesive to the toe portion of the insole of a shoe prepared for lasting, in combination, an airtight, portable container having a handle for use in manipulating it, a rigid foot, having a substantially fiat under surface projecting from the container near its bottom, said foot having a curved, forward edge of a contour approximating that of the toe end of the insole and having an interior chamber which communicates with the interior of the container, the foot having a s ngle, curved delivery orifice in its underside through which adhesive may be discharged from the container, a valve casing secured to the container, said casing having a connection for a flexible conductor leading from a source of compressed air and also having a passage opening into the interior of the container, a valve normally closing said latter passage, and a finger-actuable element for opening the valve thereby to admit compressed air from said source to the container for ejecting adhesive from the orifice.
15. A portable appliance for use in toe lasting, comprising in combination a portable container for adhesive, a part having therein a delivery orifice, means defining a passage leading from the container to the delivery orifice, means normally operative to prevent escape of adhesive from the orifice, means for delivering air under pressure from a supply, a manually actuable valve for admitting compressed air from said supply to the container thereby to discharge adhesive through the orifice, and means operative to heat the parts which define the delivery orifice and the passage leading thereto.

Portable apparatus of the class described comprising a portable, airtight container for thermoplastic adhesive, said container having a bottom and a delivery foot in heat conducting relation to the bottom, said foot having therein a delivery orifice of substantially U-shape, means defining a passage for adhesive leading from the container tothe orifice, means normallypreventing adhesive. from escaping from the orifice, means operative toadmit compressed air to the container thereby to cause adhesive to exude from the orifice, and means to heat the bottom of the 'container..: Y

In combination in an apparatus for delivering adhesive to the marginal portion of one end of a shoe insole, a foot having a substantially flat undersurface designed to rest upon the insole, said foot having a curved edge substantially conforming to the curvature of the end of the insole, the foot having a substantially U-shaped orifice in its undersurface, aportable, airtight container for fluid adhesive, a-Iconduit for conveying adhesive from the container to the orifice, movable means normallyclosing the orifice but which moves to orifice-opening position in response to a predetermined pressure at its inner side, means for delivering air from a supply to the interior of the container under 'a pressure-sufficient to move the orifice-closing means to orifice-opening position, and a manually actuable valve foradmitting compressed air from said supply .to the container thereby to discharge'adhesive through the orifice. 18. Portable apparatus of the class described comprising a portable container for thermoplastic adhesive, means for heating the container, a delivery foot, said'foot having therein a delivery orifice of substantially U-shape, means defining a passage for'adhesive leading from the container tofthe orifice, a valve normally held closed by spring action, said valve being normally operative to prevent adhesive from exuding from the orifice,'means for delivering air under pressure from a supply to the interior of the container, and a manuallyactuable valve for'admitting compressed air from the supply to the container thereby to discharge adhesive through the orifice.

In combination inapparatus of the class described, a foot having a curved forward edge contoured and dimensioned to fit within the up standing last margin at the toe end of the shoe, said foot having an undersurface in which is an orifice having a curvature similar to that of said forward edge of the foot but which is spaced inwardly from said edge, a resilient closure member normally closing said orifice but whichzflexes in response to a predetermined pressure at its inner side thereby to open the orifice, means for delivering air under pressure from a supply to the interior of the container, and a manually actuable valve for admitting compressed air from the supply to the container thereby to discharge adhesive through thexorifice.

In combination in apparatus of theclass described, a foot havin a curved forwardedge designed to fit within the upstanding lasting mar gin at one end or the shoe, said foot having anundersu-riac'e provided with. a segment-shaped cavity having its curved edge spaced from and concentric with the-curved forward edge of the foot, asegmental filler block of lesser radius of curvature than the cavity so disposed within the cavity that the-curved edges of the cavity and block are spaced and concentric, the undersurface of the block being substantially flush with the undersurface of the foot, the block being of lesser height than the cavity and thefoot' having an interior chamber which communicates at times with the space between the curved edges of the block and cavity, a closurewhich normally" cuts oif communication between said chamber and said space, and means for supplyin fluid adhesive under pressure to theichamber. f
.,2'S .'In cdmb'nationin apparatus of the class describedfa foothaving a curved forward edge designed to fit within the upstanding lasting margin at the toe end of the shoe, said foothaving an undersurface provided-with a segment-shaped cavity whose curved edgeis' spaced rearwardly of and substantially COIiCIlliliC'fWith the curved forward edge of the foot, a segmental block disposed within the cavity, the curved edges oi the block and cavity being spaced apart and concentric thereby defining between them an orifice of substantially U-shape, the curved edge of the block being downwardly beveled and the foot having an interior chamber which at times communicates with the orifice, a thin, flexible, resilient closure overlying the block and normally cutting fi' communication between the chamber and orifice, and means for delivering fluid adhesive to the chamber under sufficient pressure to flex the closure downwardly toward the beveled surface of the block thereby permitting ejection of adhesive from the orifice.

An appliance for use in toe lasting shoes comprising in combination a portable container for fluid adhesive, said appliance comprising a nozzle having a single U-shaped delivery orifice of approximately the radius of curvature of the toe end of the shoe insole, means engageable with the upstanding lasting margin of the shoe 14 providing a passage through which fluidzadhesiyefrom the. containermay' reach: the nozzle orifice, the nozzle being: movable: rearward-1y,- relatively to the insole, thereby to spreadthe adhesive.con-- stitutmg said gob.-
25. A manually actuable appliance for use" in tea lasting a shoe,- said applianc'e comprisi-ng a portablecontainer for: adhesive and a nozzle mem her hired tothe container and having-a single, substantially U-shaped curved delivery orifice con-forming substantially to thecurvature of the: toe end of the shoe to be lasted and operative: to deliver a unitary U-shaped gob of adhesive substantially conforming to the contour of the-for i warded'ge oi the toe portion of the insolefthe delivery orifice: being arranged to discharge the adhesive into direct contact-with the'expos'edsur face of the insole, and means for initiating the expulsion of adhesive from said orifice.

In combination in apparatus for use in depositing a single, unitary gob of adhesive upon the to'e end 01" the insole of a shoe prepared for lasting, said apparatus comprising aportable container for'adhesive, a foot fixed to the contain-erand'having a substantially flat under surface designedto rest directly upon the toe portion of the insole, saidioot having therein an interior chamber, means for conducting adhesive from the container to said chamber; means providing a floor for'said chamber, the'floor having therein a single substantially U-sha-ped orificethrou'gh whichadhesive from" said chamber may be ext-ruded in the form of a unitarylll shaped gobu'pon the toe end of the insoleof the shoe while thefoot remains stationary: on the insole, and
meansforcontrol-ling the" flow of adhesive from the container to saidcha'mber. r

In combination in apparatus for applying a uniitarygobof adhesive to the marginal portion of one end of a shoe insole, a portable container for adhesive, the container having a rigid bottom member provided a one side with a rigid laterallyextending foot whoseundersu rface is substantial- 1y flush with the undersurface of the bottom member, the foot being designedtorest upon said end portion of the insole, said foot having a single U-shap'ed curved orifice in its under surface which communicates with the interior of the container" and which-substantially conforms in contour to the curvature of theedge'of'said' end portion of the insole, a valve element, normally upper to locate the nozzle in fixed position relaclosing said orifice, but which opens downwardly in response toa predetermined fluid pressure acting at its upper surface, and means whereby, at will, such predetermined fluid pressure may be established within the container thereby initiating the expulsion of fluid adhesive from said orifice in a single gob while the foot remains at rest on the insole thereby to provide a curved adhesively coated area extending along the margin of the insole at the end of the latter.
28. An appliance for use in applying adhesive to the marginal portion of one end of a shoe insole preparatory to lasting, said appliance comprising a fluid tight container having a rigid bottom 'memberprovided at one side with a rigid laterally-extending foot having a substantially flat undersurface designed to rest upon said end container and which is spaced inwardly from and which is of a curvature substantially corresponding to that of said curved edge of the foot, a resiliently flexible valve normally closing said orifice and which opens downwardly in response to a predetermined fluidpressure acting upon its upper surface, and means whereby, at will, such a predetermined fluid pressure is established within the container thereby initiating the deliverycf fluid adhesive through said orifice in a single gob while the foot remains at rest thereby to form a curved, adhesively coated area extending along the margin of the toe portion of the insole.
29. Apparatus for use in applying adhesive to the marginal portion of the insole of a shoe assembled with an upper upon a last in readiness for lasting, said apparatus comprising a portable container for fluid adhesive, 2, foot designed to rest upon the toe portion of the insole, said foot having a curved edge designed to fit within the upturned lasting margin of the shoe upper and having within it a segmental cavity, a normally fixed but removable part normally forming a floor for the cavity, said floor-forming part having a flat under surface for contact with the inner sole, one edge of the floor being so spaced from the wall of the cavity as to define a single, substantially U-shaped orifice, and means defining a passage for conveying adhesive from the container to said orifice.
30. In combination in apparatus for applying adhesive to the marginal portion of a shoe insole assembled with an upper upon a last in readiness for lasting, said apparatus comprising a nozzle having a curved, forward edgedesigned to fitwithin the upstanding lasting margin at one end of the shoe, said nozzle having a segment-shaped cavity, a normally fixed but removable segment-shaped block having a flat under surface for contact with the insole of the shoe, said block having a forward edge of lesser radius of curvature than that of the cavity and being so disposed in the cavity that the curved edge of the block is spaced from the edge of the cavity thereby defining a single curved orifice, and means for supplying fluid adhesive for delivery through said orifice.
31. In combination in apparatus for use in toe lasting, a portable container for adhesive, means for heating thermoplastic material within the container thereby to keep the adhesive fluid, a

rigid spreader designed to rest upon the toe end of the insole of a' shoe, said spreader having a curved forward edge of such shape and dimensions that it may be fitted snugly within the lipstanding lasting margin of a shoe upper assembled with an insole upon a last inreadiness. for lasting, said spreader having therein a single, narrow delivery orifice, the delivery orifice being curved to'follow the curvature of the forward edge of the foot whereby the adhesive delivered from the orifice is in the form of a unitary, substantially U-shaped gob, and means comprising a manually actuable valve for controlling the flow of adhesive from the container to the orifice.
32. In combination in apparatus-of the class described, a foot having a substantially flat under surface designed to rest upon the toe portion of the insoleof a shoe prepared for lasting, said foot having a curved forward edge of a contour approximating that of the end of the insole, the foot having a single delivery orificecurved to conform substantially to the curvature of the toeportion of the insole, a'portable air-tight container for fluid adhesive, means for conducting adhesive from the container to the orifice, means for supplying air under pressure, and a manually actuablevalve for admitting compressed air from the supply to the container thereby to discharge adhesive through the orifice.
