  • This invention relates to new and useful improvements in louvre constructions and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a connecting bar between the outwardly swinging closure members of a louvre and a counterweight mounted on the bar for urging the closure members to an open position so that as wind pressure is exerted upon the closure members the same will be forced to their closed position but when the wind pressure decreases the counterweight will again urge the closure members to their open position.

1 Claim.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in louvre constructions and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a connecting bar between the outwardly swinging closure members of a louvre and a counterweight mounted on the bar for urging the closure members to an open position so that as wind pressure is exerted upon the closure members the same will be forced to their closed position but when the wind pressure decreases the counterweight will again urge the closure members to their open position.
Another very important object of the present invention is to provide a louvre construction of the aforementioned character in which the counterweight is adjustably mounted on the connecting bar between the closure members so that a predetermined wind pressure will be required before the closure members will be urged to their closed position.
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a louvre construction including a plurality of interconnected horizontally swingable closure members that are simultaneously moved to an open position or to a closed position and which embodies a novel and improved means for guiding the swinging movement of the closure members when the latter are closed.
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a louvre construction that is extremely small and compact in structure, simple and practical in construction, one that is quickly and readily installed, convenient to service, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of the present invention and showing the closure members in their open position;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the present invention and showing the closure members in their closed position;
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 3-3 of Figure 2;
Figure 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 44 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is an enlarged horizontal sectional 2 view taken substantially on the plane of section line 5-5 of Figure 4;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary inside elevational view of the frame and stop strip used in conjunction with the present invention;
Figure 7 is a vertical sectional view of the connecting bar used in the present invention and,
or panels M, of any suitable material, are mounted on the side members I2 for outward swinging movement. Pivot pins it, carried by the side members l2, enter the ends of the closure members M at a point above the longitudinal center of each closure member so that the closure members will have a tendency to move to their closed position.
The closure members are spaced vertically from each other and the inner faces of the closure members, at their lower edges, are provided with longitudinal recesses l8 so that the recesses 18 of one closure member will enter a notch 20 in the outer face and upper edge of an adjacent member thereby permitting the closure members to be flush when they are closed. The lower closure member will abut the outer edge of the lower part of the frame It and the notch 20 in the upper closure member will receive a sealing strip 22 carried by the upper part of the frame II to completely close the space between the closure members, the upper closure member and the upper part of the frame, and the lower closure member and the lower part of the frame.
Attaching ears 24 project outwardly from the inner faces and the central portions of the closure members It and are pivoted by pins or rivets 2'6 to a connecting bar or strip 28 having a plurality of longitudinally spaced openings 3! therein. Since the closure members are Joined by thebar 28 they will be moved in unison either to an open or closed position.
A fastener 32 enters a selected one of the openings 30 and holds suitable counterweights 34 against the bar 28. The counterweights 34 co-act with the bar 28 to urge the closure members to their open position. Wind pressure, or any external pressure will urge the same to their closed position but upon a decrease in the pressure upon the closure members the counterweights will again tend to urge the closure members to their open position. By adjusting the counterweights longitudinally upon the connecting bar 28 a predetermined pressure acting on the closure members, will be required before the same will be urged to their closed position.
Means is provided for limiting the opening movement of the closure members and the means consist of vertical strips 36 that are secured to the inner faces of the side members 12. The strips 38 are spaced inwardly of the pivots [6-,
as shown in Figure 6, and are formed with ver-- tically spaced, substantially V-shaped notches 38 having edges 40 that will abut the inner faces of the closure members to arrest theoutward swinging movement of the closure members.
Plates 46 are secured to the rear or inner faces of the closure members 14 and are slidably received between the'legs 44 of the strips 42 and the strips 36. The plates 46 will also restrict slidlng. movement of the closure: members M between the side members I2.
In order that the closure members can swing outwardly without obstruction from the legs 44 of the strips 42, the legs-44 are provided with notches that register with'the notches 38.
In-view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device-will be. quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to lee-understood, however, that even though there is herein shown' and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein 4 described and the. scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A louver construction comprising a pair of vertical side members, a plurality of panels, horizontal pivots securing the ends of the panels to the members, a pair of vertical strips mounted on the inner faces of the members between said rear edges and said pivots, said strips having a plurality of notches therein receiving the ends of the panels during pivoting of the panels and said notches including vertically inclined lower walls constituting abutments for the ends of the panels, a pair of vertical plate members paralleling the side members and including flanges secured to the strips, and a pair of vertical plates attached to and projecting laterally from each of the panels at the ends thereof and received between said strips and said plate members.
