This invention relates to paper roll supports for wrapping machines and has for its ob-ject to provide a support upon which a paper roll can be quickly and easily mounted for rotation on the support and upon which the roll can be accurately positioned with respect to the machine to which the paper is delievered.
In the support of the present invention the main supporting element is a tube rigidly attached at its inner end to a rigid part of the machine frame and having its outer end free to receive a paper roll. Inner and outer rotatable roll carrying units are provided for supporting engagement with opposite ends of the roll, the roll carrying ,units being mounted on the tube and the outer roll` carrying unit being removable over the free end of the tube to permit a paper roll to be placed upon the tube. The roll carrying units are mounted for relative adjustment on the tube so that they can have clamping engagement with the paper roll, the relative adjustment of the roll carrying units being effected by a screw shaft within the tube. The roll carrying units include roll carrying members mounted on anti-friction bearings and one of the units carries an adjustable friction brake acting on the roll carrying member of the unit to apply as much resistance to rotation as may be necessary to prevent overrunning.

In the accompanying drawings a fragment I of a machine frame is shown and to the frame I there is rigidly attached the inner end of a tube 2 which provides a paper roll receiving support. Within the tube. 2 f and substantially coaxial therewith there is mounted a screw shaft 3 which in the modification of the'i-nvention herein illustrated-is provided with screws 4 and 5 adjacent its inner and outer ends, the screws I4 and 5 being right and left hand screws for simultaneously moving members in threaded engagement therewith in opposite directions. The inner end of the handgrip I bears against the outer end of the tube 2 and is of the same diameter as the tube, the handgrip having a tapered shoulder I2 to facilitate the placing of a paper roll on the tube. 1 f l y Nuts I4 and I5 are mounted on the screws 4 and 5 and the tube 2 is provided along the length of the screws 4 and 5 with longitudinal slots I6 and I'I that receive portions of the nuts vin the form of keys I8 and I9 fixed to the nuts I4 and- I5`and slidablytting in the slots. Collars 2U and 2I are slidably mounted on the tube 3 and carry-rotatable roll carrying members 22 and 23 which engage with opposite ends of the paper roll. The two roll .supporting units corn-1,A prising the slidable A.collar and rotatable roll carrying member have substantially identical rollv engaging members, each of the roll carrying members having an inner tapering tubular portion 24 which closely surounds the tube 2 in-- wardly of the collars 20 and 2I, and each ofthe roll carrying members 22 and 23 has lan enlarged outer .tubular portion 25 surrounding the inner end of the collar upon which it is mounted, roll engaging shoulders 26 being Vprovided between the enlarged outer portion 25 and the.
inner taperedportionvr 23 ofthe roll carrying member. Thrust ball bearings 21 vare interposed releasable latch so that the unit may be quickly and easily removed from the tube to permit mounting of a paper roll. 'Ihe latch is in the form of a radially slidable pin that engages in a recess 3| in the key I9. The pin 30 is slidably mounted in a tubular guide 32 attached to the collar 2| and is pressed toward its locking position by-a spring 33,.mounted Within the tubular guide 32. A suitable handle member 34 is attached to the outer end of the pin 30 so that the pin can be readily lifted out of engagement with the key I9 to permit the outer roll carrying unit comprising the collar 2| and roll support 23 to be removed over the free outer end of the tube 2. After a paper ro-ll has been mounted on the tube 2 and the outer roll carrying unit has been replaced on the tube, the paper roll can be clamped between the carrying units by ractuation of the screw shaft 3.
When the two roll carrying units are moved one toward the other the tapered ends 24 of the carrying members 2.2 and 23 enter the core of the .paper roll, guiding the ends of the roll into engagement with the shoulders 26 which clamp the roll. For clamping the roll it is only necessary that one of the carrying units be screw actuated, but when it is desired to center the roll with respect to the machine to which the paper is fed as well as to clamp the roll, the two roll carrying units are attached to the nuts on the right and left hand screws 4 and 5, so that when the shaft 3 is turned the two units are moved simultaneously toward a central median plane, centering the roll with respect to that plane.
It is usually desirable to retard rotation of the paper roll suiciently Vto overcome the momentum of the roll and preventoverrunning when pull on the paper being withdrawn is discontinued. To this end a brake arm 3:5 is pivoted to the outer collar 2| and has its inner end portion overlying the enlarged inner portion of the roll carrying member 23. The brake arm 35 is pivoted to a bracket 36 attached to the collar 2|, and carries a friction shoe 31 that engages with the periphery of the enlarged portion 25 of the rol1 carrying member. Means is pro-vided for yieldingly pressing .the shoe 31 against the roll carrying member and for Varying the pressure exerted on the shoe. The adjustable pressure applying means includes Ia radially disposed screw 38 attached to the collar 2| and bracket 36 and passing through an aperture in the arm 35. A spring 39 is interposed between the outer face of the arm 3'5 and a nut40 on the screw 38. The pressure exerted by the spring 39 on the shoe 31 can be regulated by adjusting the nut 40 which is secured in adjusted position by a lock nut 4|.
It is to lbe understood that in accordance with the provisions of the "patent statutes, variations and modifications of vthe specic devices herein shown and described may be 'made without departing from 'the spirit of the invention.
What I claim is:
1. A paper roll support comprising a frame, a tube attached at one end to said frame and having a, free roll receiving end, said tube having longitudinal slots, a shaft journaled within said tube and having a right-hand screw and a lefthand screw spaced apart longitudinally within the tube, a nut on each screw, a collar slidable on said tube adjacent each nut, means connecting said collars to said nuts vthrough said tube slots to cause the collars to move longitudinally with the nuts inwardly 'toward one another and outwardly away from one another and to hold the collars and nuts against rotation on the tube, opposed roll carrying members, each having a tubular outer end portion surrounding the inner end of one of said collars, a tubular inner end portion of less diameter than the outer end portion and closely overlying the tube inwardly of the collar and an annular shoulder portion connecting said tubular portions, and a ball thrust bearing interposed between said outer end portions of said roll carrying members and said collars.
2. A paper roll support comprising a frame, a tube attached at one end to said frame `and havinga free roll receiving end, said tube having longitudinal slots, .a shaft journaled within said tube and having a right-hand screw and a lefthand screw spaced apart longitudinally within the tube, a nut on each screw, a collar slidable on said tube adjacent each nut, means connecting said collars to said nuts through said tube slots to cause the collars to move longitudinally with the nuts inwardly toward `one another and outwardly away from one another and to hold the collars and nuts against rotation on the tube, opposed roll carrying members, each lhaving a tubular outer end portion surrounding the inner end of one of said collars, a tubular inner end portion of less diameter than the outerend .p0rtion and closely overlying the tube inwardly of the collar and an annular shoulder portion cony necting said tubular portions, a ball thrust bearing interposed between said outer end portions of said roll carrying members and said collars, a brake mounted on one of said collars and engaging the tubular outerportion of the roll carrying member, and adjustable means 'for pressing said brake against said .roll carrying member.
3. A paper roll support comprisinga frame, a tube attached at one end to said frame and having a roll receiving free end, said tube having longitudinal slots extending inwardly from its attached and its free ends, a shaft journaled in said tube and having aright-hand screw and a left-hand screw spaced vlongitudinally thereof, a nut on each screw having a portion guided in one of said longitudinal slots, two spaced roll supporting units each comprising a lcollar slidable on said tube and a roll engaging member having a tapered tubular vroll engaging inner end and an enlarged tubular outer end rotatably mounted on said collar, and a locking member .carried by each collar and engaging the guided portion of a nut, the locking member of the collar adjacent the free end of the tubebeing mounted for movement to a position clear of 1 the nut and tube to permit the unit to be removed over the free end of said tube.

A paper roll support comprising a frame, a tube attached at one end to said 'frame and having a free ro-ll vreceiving end,'said tube having a longitudinal slort, .a screw journaled in said tube. a nut on said screw having a portion extending into said slot and provided with an exteriorly facing recess, a removable roll supporting unit comprising a collar slidable on said tube and a roll carrying member rotatably rmounted .on said collar, a radially movable locking `member 4slidably mounted on said collar and engage-able in said nut recess to detachably fasten said collar to said screw, and a spring pressing .said locking mem-ber toward locking position,

v tube attached :at one lend to .said frame and having a `free roll .receiving end, :said tube having a longitudinal slot, a screw journaled'in said tube, a nut on said screw having a portion extending into said slot and provided with an exteriorly facing recess, a removable roll supporting unit comprising a collar sldable on said tube and a roll carrying member rotatably mounted on said collar, a radially movable locking member slidvably mounted on said collar and engageable in said nut recess to detachably fasten said collar to said screw, a brake arm pivotally connected to said collar and overlying a portion of the roll carrying member mounted on the collar, a brake shoe attached to said arm, a spring acting on said arm to press the shoe against the roll carrying member, and means for -adjusting the tension of the spring.
6. A paper roll support comprising a frame, a tube attached at one end to said frame and having a free roll receiving end, said tube having a longitudinal slot, a shaft journaled in said tube and projecting past its free end, a screw on said shaft within said tube, a handgrip member attached to the projecting end of said shaft, one end of said handgrip member being -adjacent said slot engaging portion of said nut to detachably fasten said collar to said nut.
