MEANS FOR FASTENING- ROLLS T0 SHAFTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented oct. 15, ieis Application filed March 8, 1918. Serial No. 220,779.
certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Fastening Rolls to shafts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. 1
his invention relates to certain improvements in means for fastening rolls to shafts and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character for securing a mill roll of paper to the rewinding shaft or the like and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved means whereby a roll of paper may be effectively held by a re-winding shaft or the like without injury of the web.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved means of this general character including a collar surrounding the shaft and ada ted toextend within an end portion of t e bore of the roll together with means for expanding the outer end portion of the collar for frictionally engaging the roll.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved means'for fastening a roll paper or'the like to a shaft including a collar surrounding the shaft and adapted to extend .within the bore of the paper roll together with an expanding memer coacting with an end portion of the collar for causing said end portion of the collar to frictionally engage the roll and wherein the shaft is rovided with means for forcing the expanding member inwardly of the collar.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved means of this type including an expansible collar surrounding the sleeve together with an expanding member movable longitudinally of the shaft and movable inwardly of the collar to expand the same ahd a member carried by the shaft for forcing the expanding member inwardly of the collar together with means operating automatically to impart outward movement to the expanding member when the forcing member is moved away from the collar.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved means for fastening rolls to shafts whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise'more convenient and advanta eons foruse, as will .be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the ac- ,companying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in elevation illustrating a means for fastening a roll to a shaft constructed. in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through the structure as disclosed in Fig. 1 with a shaft and certain of the-parts in elevation.
disposed through the bore of a mill roll of paper and especially of a roll to be slitted.
Coacting with the opposite end portions 5 of the bore of the roll are the collars C surrounding the shaft 1 and movable longitudinally thereof. The inner ends of the collars C extend within the opposite end portions of the bore of the roll and contact one with the other while the outer end portions pf the bore of each of the collars is enlarged and said collar throughout the extent of said enlarged or counter-bore is slitted so that said outer portion of the collar may be expanded to frictionally engage the roll so that the roll may be effectively se-' cured to the shaft. Coacting with the outer or slitted end portions of each of the rolls is an expanding member M tubular in form and slidably mounted upon the shaft 1. The inner end portion of the member M is adapted to'extend within the outer end portion of the coacting collar C and at a predetermined point intermediate its length the expanding member M is provided with the beveled shoulder or annular cam 3 which serves to expand the slitted end portion of the collar C when the member M is forced inwardly thereof. Threaded upon the shaft 1 and coacting with the outer end of each of the members M is a nut N which may be readily turned byhand and which. afi'ords to the member inwardly ofthe coacting collar G in order to efiect the desired expansion of the outer end portion of the collar C.
It is also preferred that the collar C have inwardly directed pin 7 or the like extending within the groove 2 so that the collar is held against rotation around the shaft 1 whereby the expanding of the outer end portion of said collar C is materially facilitated.
The collars C, members M and nuts N are properly positioned upon the shaft 1 after the shaft has been disposed through the bore .of the mill roll and, as is believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which my present invention appertains, these elements may be readily positioned irrespective of the width of the web comprised in the roll.
In order'to facilitate the outward movement of the expanding member M relative to its coacting collar C when a nut N engageable with the member M is moved in a direction away from the collar C, I provide the expansible member 5 seated within the en-' larged portion or counter-bore 6 of the col lar C and which is compressed by the member M when said member is forced inwardly of the collar 0. As herein disclosed the expansible member 5 comprises a coil spring encircling the shaft 1.
iaeneei arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrylng out my 1nvention in practice except; as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
In combination with a shaft insertible through the bore of a paper roll, a pair of collars loosely surrounding said shaft and adapted to extend within the bore of the paper roll through opposite ends thereof, the inner ends of said collars contacting, the outer portions of the collars being slitted whereby the same may be expanded and the outer end portion of the bore of each of said collars being enlarged, members loosely surrounding the shaft and extending within the slitted end portions of the collars to expand the same, a coil spring within the enlarged portion of the bore of each of the collars and surrounding the shaft, said spring being interposed between the inner end of the member and the inner end of the enlarged portion of the bore of the collar for automatically moving the member away .from the collar, members mounted upon the shaft outwardly of the first members and contacting with said first named members to force the same inwardly of the collars to expand the outer end portions of the collars and for placing the spring under tension, and means carried by each of the collars coacting with the shaft for holding the same against rotationabout'the shaft.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LEON L. SIBLEY.
