. INVENTOR. ALBERT I... MOHRMANN 1952 A. L. MOHRMANN WEIGHTING MEMBER FOR CARD SORTING RACKS 2 SHEETSSHEET 2 Filed 0017:. 14, 1949 Patented Oct. 14, 1 952 WEIGHTING MEMBER FOR CARD RACKS SORTINGI 7 Albert L. Molirmann, Brooklyn, N. YJ H 1 Application October 14, 1949, Serial No. 121,256 I This invention relatesto improvements in racks for holding information cards such as are utilized in business offices. v j
The principal object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the loss of cards 'from such racks due to wind'or' o'therjcauses is prevented. I I
Another object of theinvention is so to construct said means as to flmake it applicable to racks already in use'in business offices without the necessity of alterations in the racks themselves.
Still another object of the invention is so to construct said means as to provide for moving the card retaining portion thereof toan out of the way position when the same is not in use.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a card holding rack of the type to which the invention is to be applied.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the rack of Fig. 1 with the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the rack shown in Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the top portion of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective view of the means of the invention with some parts left out to clarify the view.
Fig. 6 is a detail in perspective of the card retainer of the invention.
Fig. 7 is a detail in side elevation of the card retainer of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary sectional view illustrating the position in which the card retainer is placed when not in use.
A card rack of the type to which the invention is to be applied is illustrated in Fig. 1 and a case having a back board ID to which are secured side boards II and a floor board I2, the space between said side boards being divided up into several compartments by partitions I3 which are secured to the back :board Ill and the floor board l2.
According to the invention there is provided a large sheet metal plate M (Fig. 5) bent over at its top to form a channel l5 adapted to'fit over the top of the back board [0 (Figs. 4 and 8),
s Claims. (01. 211 10 and having a seriesofslits: l-t0 receive the partitions I 1 13 .FTIH
Plate. I4 is also provided with a series of slots, l1 (Figs. 2 and ,3) interspersed with slits l6,-;the
slots however extending upwardly-past-the apex of the curved portion-of'sthe plate '14 (Figs. 4 and 8). 'In-eachof theslots 11- there is loosely mounted a cardretaining device comprisingv a nail-like bar It (Figspdand; 7),;havingz-one end flattened in the horizontaldirection-only to. form a head 20 and havingvalso' an vannularoollar'or shoulder 2| spaced a short distance along the bar from the head 20. At its other end bar l8 has fastened thereto as by a screw 22, a downwardly extending member 23 to which is secured a flat weight or card retainer 24.
The construction is such that the shank of each bar [8 between head 20 and collar 2| resides in slot 11 and is maintained in said slot for up and down sliding movements as cards are placed in or removed from the compartment with which it is associated by said head and collar.
In order to provide room in which head 20 can slide up and down between plate l4 and back board It], plate I4 is provided with several spacer blocks 25 (Figs. 4 and 5) which bear against back board [0.
In order that the weights 24 can be moved to an out of the way position when not in use, plate [A is made of a vertical length sufficient for the lower end thereof to bear on floor board l2, the upper end of channel I5 then being spaced a short distance above the top of back board 10 (Figs. 4 and 8) to provide room for head 20. As mentioned above each slot I1 is continued a short distance past the apex of the curve in the upper portion of plate It and the card retainer can, therefore, be moved upward and the plate 24 swung past a vertical position above back board l0 (Figs. 1 and 8), the device being maintained in this out of the way position by the bar l8 engagin the end of slot l1.
It will be seen that the reason for flattening head 20 of bar I8 only in the horizontal direction is to permit of said head being moved about the arcuate upper end of channel I5.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the pre cise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I 3 claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
l. A weighting member for use with a rack having a backboard and a plurality of forwardly extended partitions dividing the interior of the rack into compartments open at their fronts and tops for receiving stacks of paper comprising a fiat plate, said plate having a plurality of equally spaced slits"extiided upward fromthe bottom edge thereof andhaving between each pair of slits a vertically extended slot, said plate having, its top portion bent rearward and downward, forwardly extended horizontal, bars, having their rear ends slidably retained in said slots for V81: tical movement relative to said plate, and weights mounted on the front ends of said'bars'.
2. A weighting member foruuse witha rack, having a backboard and a plurality of forwardly extended partitions dividing the interior of therack into compartments open at their fronts and tops for-receiving stacks ofpaper comprising a fiat plate, said plate having a plurality of equally spaced slits extended upward from the bottom edgef'thereof and having-"between each of slits-a vertically extended slot, said plate having its top portionxbentrearward and downward, a plurality of weight's detachably mounted to said plate, each of said Weights being adapted to flee slidablydisplaced" in one'of said slots in a dire'ction relativetosaid plate; 1
3. 'A 'w'ei ghting member foruse with a rack havmember attached to said plate, said top memher extending. rearward and downward and adapted tortaid's'aid weights at the topmost position of; their vertical displacement.
