' I (oi. 31o- 331) J w3 Claims.
Thisinvention relates to stropping andhoning devices for safety razor blades, and more particularly to holders for the blades while being stropped or honed.`
lOne of the principal robjects of the present invention is to provide a holder for safety razor blades of sanitary and inexpensive construction, which is simple to operate and attractive in appearance. p y
Another object of the present invention is to provide a general design of holder which may be easily adapted to safety razor blades of various makes and types. 1
A further object of the present' invention is to provide a solid holder having a slot wherein the razor blades are inserted edgewise, and with simple means of securing a blade in the slot.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will appear from the following specification and reference to the accompanying drawings, in which,
Fig. l is a perspective view of one form of safety razor blade holder in accordance with my invention, with a razor blade in said holder;
Fig. 2 is a plan view, partly in section, of the holder and blade shown in Fig. l
Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary, sectional view corresponding to that of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a section taken 0n the line 5 5 of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a section similar to Fig. 5 but showing a modified form of my invention.
Referring to the drawings in which like numerals designate like parts in the corresponding views, and referring particularly to Figs. 1 to 5, the numeral IU designates a holder for a safety razor blade l2 of the type having a central longitudinal slot I4 and aligned, reduced end portions IB. The holder I0 is of relatively flat formation having a width substantially less than that of the blade I2, and having longitudinal, parallel edges I8 equally spaced on opposite sides of the axis of the holder, which is also provided with an axially extending handle 2D, of reduced diameter, the latter being preferably formed integral with the holder lll. A blade receiving slot 22, of suiiicient length to receive the blade I2 when inserted edgewise in said slot extends transversely across holder I0 through the edges I8. Fixed stop shoulders 24 are formed in the ends of transverse slot 22 at one of the edges I8 and these shoulders are engageable with the aligned edges of the reduced end portions I6 of the blade I2 at one side vthe latch bar 30 or iid.
to stop the lateral movement of said blade in a central position in said holder with the edges of the blade I2 projecting`-radially beyond the edges I8 of the holder It) to leave the edges of the blade free to be stropped onthe strop 25, or honed on a suitable hone. Y
A longitudinal slot 23 is formed in one side of the holder I0, thisv slot being preferably located at a right angle with' the walls of the transverse slot in a position vvherethe slot 28 will be in registry withthe slot `Illin the blade'l 2. 'Alatch bar 30 is mounted in slot 28`in such a manner that its outer edge will be flush with the surface of the holder ID to provide a smooth and uninterrupted surface. The latch bar may be pivotally connected at 32 to the holder, or otherwise rendered radially movable in the slot 28. The latch bar 30 is provided with recesses 34 on opposite sides lnear its free end, and notches 36 are formed in the holder opposite the recesses 34, to provide nail and finger grasp means for lifting the bar from the slot 28.
A latch element consisting of a wire spring 38 having a depression 40 in its middle portion is molded into or otherwise attached to the free end of the latch bar 39. A rounded projection 42 is formed in the end of slot 23 adjacent the spring latch 38 for detachable engagement therewith to hold latch bar Sliin closed position with its inner edge projecting into the horizontal slot lli of the razor blade I2, and thus secure the blade against displacement from the side of slot 22 in which it is inserted. The stop shoulders 24 and the latch bar 36 prevent lateral movement of blade I2 in the slot 22 in either direction, so that the blade may be stropped or honed without danger of shifting of the blade in the holder I0.
The combined holder I0 and handle I3 may be molded of plastic or any other suitable material.
In Fig. G is shown a modified form of the holder in which the latch bar it is made of somewhat greater thickness than that shown in Figs. l to 5, but having a thinner portion 46 for insertion in the slot i4 of the razor blade. This construction provides a shoulder #i8 on each side of the slot 23 to clamp the blade against the bottom oi slot it, thereby causing the blade to be held more rigidly in the holder.
In either of the forms of my invention illustrated and described herein, the only operation necessary to iix a safety razor blade in the holder is to insert the blade edgewise in the transverse slot 28, until it comes to a stop, and then close The latch means 33 at the end of the latch bar will automatically snap 3 into latching position over the cooperating abutment at the end of the slot in which the latch bar is mounted. The latch bar can be unlatched to release the blade by pulling the free end outwardly on the pivot 32 with suflicient force to overcome the hold of the latch spring.
Slot 28 may be extended slightly below the bottom of blade receiving slot 22, as indicated at 29, so that when latch 3'0 is closed it will project entirely through the v.slot l4vof the razor yblade l2 and thereby preclude any possibility of the blade sliding under the bottom of the latch bar.
Various changes may be made in the detail construction of my improved razor blade holder without departing from the scope and spirit of my invention. It should therefore, .be understood that the embodiments of my invention shown and described are intended to be illustrative, only and not restrictive thereto.
I claim:
1. A relatively atholder yfora longitudinally slotted safety, razor blade which; blade is provided V,withaxiallyialigned end portionsof ,reduceciwidthy rsaidholde'i'.having aghandlefextending axially `from .one` end thereof, ,said holder also havingtherein a through, transverse slot of suicientlength to receivesaid fbladewhen slidably inserted edgewise, .axially aligned shoulders in said -vslot len- ,gageable with alignededges .of said 4reduced end portions of .said blade `to stop .its slidable -`movement in said ,slot -in `analigned positionzin relation` with .the axis' ofl said holder, rand with the edgesofsaidrblade projecting radially beyond the edges .of-.saidho1der, said slot-,being transversely unobstructed except by said shoulders, a longitudinal slot in one side of said holder, the walls of said slot being disposed at a right angle to and extending through the wall of said transverse slot in a position to register with the longitudinal slot in said blade, and a latch bar pivotally mounted at one end in the longitudinal slot in said holder, said bar being inserted in the longitudinal slot in said blade to secure said blade Aagainst lateral displacement from the side of said slot wherein said blade is inserted.
2. A safety razor blade holder according to claim 1 and including cooperative, detachable ymeans -carried by the free end of said latch bar and the adjacent end of the longitudinal slot wherein .said bar is mounted, for securing said bar in .the longitudinal slot of said blade.
3. A holder for a safety razor blade according to -claimjl in which the slot in which said latch bar is mounted extends .through the blade receivingvslot toreceive `the lower edge Yoffsaid latchy bar.
