the principal object of the invention resides in the provision of a much fasterand easier methodv 'of aligning the crankshaft in a machine'for rotating the same on its axis so that a grinding wheel may be moved transversely with respect thereto to grind the bearings, this resulting in saving of time and effort on the part of the operator and increased accuracy as to the work done.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a flanged cylindrical hollow member having a driving dog thereon and receiving the usual small end of a crankshaft, the flange of this member being received within the area of a rim on a circular plate-lake jig or the like in radially adjustable relation thereto, these two members being bolted together in adjustable relation and the plate having means for arranging the same on the center of the head stock of a lathe, in combination with a more or less similar platelike jig to be arranged on the center of the tail stock and having a rim receiving the flange at the opposite end of the crankshaft, this plate being directly bolted to the flange in adjustable relation therewith in a radial direction relative to I the lathe centers and both plates having means for adjusting the hollow cylindrical member and the shaft flange respectively, to the end that the shaft ends are easily and quickly radially adjusted substantially micrometrically and at the same time the shaft is rotated on the axis thereof as by the dog on the cylindrical member above described, the plates described serving to hold and center the shaft.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a view in elevation with parts in section showing the set-up of the new device with respect to the head stock of a lathe;

In carrying out the present invention, the same is to be applied to a crankshaft I0 having a flange at one end at l2 and a bearing or gear axis of the member.

A hollow cylindrical member 20 having a means such as a set-screw 22 radially arranged therein receives the end l4 of the crankshaft in closely fitting condition, with the means 22 se-' curing the same non-rotatably therein. In conjunction with the cylindrical member 253, there is provided a plate-like jig 38 which has In this rim there are provided a series of adjusting means 42 arranged radially, see particularly Fig. 5. These may take the form of screws which engage the periphery of the flange 24 of the cylindrical member 26, so that the lattermay be adjusted where desired radially relative to the lathe centers. When adjusted as desired, the bolts 44, arranged in slots. are tightened to rigidly secure plate 38 to the cylindrical member 20 in adjusted position.
The flange I2 is received in a plate 46 which also has a rim or flange 48 receiving the flange [2 of the shaft, the latter being drilled and tapped for the reception of bolts 50, in radial slots 52,- and radial screws or other means 54 ar provided similarly to those at 42 for radial adjustment of the flanged end of the crankshaft relative to the lathe centers. All of the bolts work in respective slots to accomplish the adjustment.
With the set-up disclosed, the end I4 of the crankshaft is inserted in the cylindrical member which may or may not already be lightly secured to plate 38, and the flange I2 is inserted in the other plate 46. This assembly then being placed on the lathe centers, the shaft is easily centered on a true axis with respect to the lathe centers for the grinding operation above described, but
the center holes for the lathe centers in the shaft itself are not used, so that a new, more accurate crankshaft axis is produced, particularly for refinished work. ,7
Having thus described our invention and the being received in the "rimmed area of the plate,
means adjustably but firmly securing the cylindrical member flange to the plate, means-to ad-- just the cylindrical memberflange radially a second plate, a rim thereon, the shaft flange being received therein, releasable means to 'adjustably secure the shaft flange to the-second plate, means to adjust the shaft flange radially on the second plate, and means to center the plates on the centers of a lathe.
