Description

Patented Sept. 23, 1952 OFFICE OLEAGINOUS CORROSION PREVENTIVE COMPOSITION Bernard L. Costello, Riverside, N. J.
No Drawing. Application June 18, 1948, Serial No. 33,834
1 Claim.
(Granted .under the act of March 3, 1883,as
amended April 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757) This invention relates to a new and improved rust and corrosion preventative in which selected oils and ingredients are mixed in specific proportions and relation so as to form a compound which, when applied to ferrous and other metals, has the property of protecting them from oxidation induced by air and/or moisture.
It is known that many metals, when exposed to air, water, acids, fumes, etc., become oxidized and deteriorate on their surfaces to form a rust or oxidation. In order to protect said metal sur faces from this corrosive action of gases and liquids coatings of oil are used which are unaffected by exposure to the corrosive elements aforesaid. When applied to the metal surfaces these oils protect by preventing exposure and by their own neutral properties.
One of the problems is to provide an oleic compound which contains no acids or acid forming ingredients and still has good wetting qualities and 'adhesiveness. It must also permit removal, by wiping or solvent, after the need for protection has ceased.
Dependable protection against corrosion permits overseas shipment and storage of airplane motors, their parts and accessories, and many other metallic products, under both arctic and tropical conditions.
The principal object of this invention is to mix and blend specific oils so as to form an efiective rust and corrosion preventative for metals exposed to oxidizing atmospheric conditions.
Another object of this invention is to mix and blend neutral oils so as to form a satisfactory rust and corrosion inhibitor that is easily and quickly applied to metals in a normally liquid state, and that when properly applied wil1 protect metals so treated for long periods of time under oxidizing atmospheric conditions.
Still another object of this invention is to mix and blend specific neutral oils so as to form a dependable rust and corrosion inhibitor that is easily and quickly applied to metals, by dipping or otherwise, and that when properly applied will protect metals so treated for long periods of time, under oxidizing atmospheric conditions, and be easily removable by wiping or solvent so as to leave as clean and bright a metal surface as when the corrosion preventative compound was applied.
The above stated objects of this invention are attained by mixing and homogeneously blending in a stable compound seven parts of soybean oil, five parts of sperm oil and three parts of linseed oil, all by approximate weight and all of commercial grade and quality.
While a particular embodiment of this invention has been illustrated and described herein, it is not intended that this invention belimited to such disclosure, and changes and modifications may be made and incorporated within the scope of the claim.
The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalties thereon or therefor.
I claim:
An oleaginous composition characterized by the ability to prevent corrosion of metallic surfaces when applied thereto and to be easily removed therefrom, consisting of a homogeneous blend of about 47% by weight of soybean oil, about 33% by weight of sperm oil and about 20% by weight of linseed oil.
