The main objects of this invention are:
First, to provide a guard for garbage can covers or the like which prevents or deters dogs or other animals from working the cover from the can.
Second, to provide a guard of this character which does not interfere with the manual handling or manipulating of the cover in the usual manner.
Third, to provide a guard of this character which can be readily applied to covers of types now in very general use.
Objects relatin to details and economies of the invention will appear from the description to follow. The invention is defined and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of a garbage can or container provided with a cover embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view in horizontal section on a line corresponding to 22 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view in vertical section on a line corresponding to 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the guard band.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of a strip 01' metal slit as a preliminary step to forming the teeth, the bending lines being indicated by dotted lines.
In the accompanying drawin I represents a garbage can or like container and 2 the cover thereof. The cover is provided with a depending peripheral flange 3 embracing the upper end of the can. This flange terminates at its lower edge in an outwardly and upwardly turned bead 4 which provides an upwardly opening slot 5.
The guard of my invention comprises a band 6 of bendable sheet metal having angularly spaced lugs "I struck out from its bottom edge. These lugs have downwardly projecting V-shaped teeth 8 on their side edges.
In Fig. 5 the strip from which the band 6 is formed is shown in the flat with diagonally disposed slits 9 therein. The portions between the slits are bent radially outward to form the lugs I. The triangular portions at the sides of the lugs and integral therewith are bent downwardly to provide the teeth 8. In Fig. 5 the dotted lines l0 indicate the fold line for the lugs while the dotted lines ll indicate the fold lines for the teeth.
The V-shaped portions l2 between the lugs (obese-. 85 v constitutefprongs 'eng'ageablewithin thebead 4 or a c'overflange as is clearly shown in T'igJ-B. The flanges of most covers have upturned reinforcing edge portions which are opened sufiiciently enough to receive the prongs or may be readily opened to receive them.
As garbage cans even when intended to be of the same capacity vary somewhat in dimensions, I provide an adjustable clamping means for the band, preferably a spring means. To this end the band has holes [3 adjacent its ends adapted to receive the hooks [4 connected to the ends of the tension spring [5.
In applying the band, it is bent around. the cover flange, its prongs inserted within the bead or upturned edge of the cover and the tension clamping means engaged.
The downwardly projecting teeth are oflfset sufiiciently so that a dog or other animal contacts therewith in attempting to nose or lift the cover from the can. It has been observed that some dogs become quite skillful in lifting the covers skilled in the art to embody or adapt my invention as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A guard for covers having a peripheral flang provided with an outwardly and upwardly turned bead on the edge of the flange comprising, a split flexible sheet metal guard band having radially disposed angularly spaced lugs struck outwardly from the lower edge thereof, the lugs having integral downwardly projecting V-shaped teeth on their longitudinal edges, the lower edge portions of the band between the lugs constituting V-shaped prongs adapted for engagement within the bead of the cover flange when the band is arranged around the flange, the band having holes adjacent its ends, and a tension spring provided with hooks at its ends engageabie with said holes for applying clamping stress to the band.
2. A guard for covers having a peripheral flange provided with an outwardly and upwardly turned bead on the edge of the flange comprising, a split flexible sheet metal guard band having radially disposed angularly spaced lugs struck outwardly from the lower edge thereof, the lugs having integral downwardly projecting V-shaped teeth on their longitudinal edges, the lower edge portions of the hand between the lugs constituting V-shaped prongs adapted for engagement within the head of the cover flange when the band is arranged around the flange.
' 3. A guard for flanged covers having upwardly facing peripheral grooves comprising, a split -:uard band having radially disposed angularly spaced lugs struck outwardly from the lower edge thereof, the lugs having downwardly directed teeth, the lower edge portionsof the band between the lugs constituting prongs adapted for engagement within the groove of the cover flange when the band is arranged around the flange.
4. A guard for flanged covers comprising, a split flexible guard band having angularly spaced lugs itruck radially outward therefrom, the lugs having integral downwardly projecting teeth also struck from the band and bent downwardly from the sides 01 the lugs, the inner edges of said teeth tapering away from said band to space the points oi. the teeth radially outwardly from the band, and means for applying clamping stress between the ends of thegband.
