Hartford,
Application July 2, 1946, Serial No. 681,010' In the Netherlands February 5, 1943 Sectionl, Public Law 690, August 8, 1946 j Patent expires February 5, 1963 It has beenv suggested before 'thatthecutter I f being formed by a stud passing through the hollow shaft of the drive and supported itself upon a stationary component member of the drive. When supporting in position in this manner the advantage is ensured that the cutting plate, whichdue to the minute thickness is liableto harmful sagging, `causedfor example by vibrations, is rconsiderablyV strengthened and is enabled to be less bulky. thanwithout central support. K
The invention provides a construction more attractive in many respects in that with a cutter head comprising a cutting plate supported in position at the outer edge as well as centrally and also a cutter co-.operating therewith, at least one of these component members being adapted to rotate on a shaft, the cutting plate is supported in position by or in some cases secured to a member which is 'lxed to the lateral wall of the device and leaves free one or more apertures, and the rotary member is actuated so as to oscillate about the shaft by one or more reciprocating arms eX- tending through the said apertures.
In this case, the movable member may be either the cutting plate or the cutter and in some cases both component members may be actuated so as to oscillate in the above-mentioned manner. If only one of the two component members is actuated the other member may be caused to rotate about the said shaft. Thus, the invention firstly offers several possibilities, of which a choice may be made at will, with regard to an optimum combination so far as the operation of the cutter head is concerned, the central support ensuring an arrangement substantially free from vibrations and rendering possible comparatively large dimensions of the active flexible part of the cutting plate. By securing the support to the lateral walls of the cutter head or of the frame or the housing of the dry-shaving device a robust construction is obtained and the use of a cleanly manufactured hollow driving shaft having a supporting stud inserted in it with all the consequent disadvantages, inter alia lubrication, larger shaft diameter and so forth, is obviated.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect it will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which two diagrammatically illustrated embodiments of the invention are shown.
Figure l is-a diagrammatic yView showing the` position of the cutter relative to the central sup.-V port for the cutting plate and the supporting frame for the central support Figurez is Va cross-sectional view of a shaverhead in accordance with the invention.
Figure 3 is a bottom view of the shaver head; shown in cross-section in Fig. 2. A L
Fig. 1 shows a cutter comprising va' ringv I andi three cuttingblades 2 fitted thereto ,whchis: actuated so as. toosc-illate about angaxisg5 by means of a U-shapedcomponent member Vil `in the direction of the arrow points of the arrow It- Intermediate the upright'limbs of the component- 3 is arranged a beam 6 whose ends are secured in the lateral wall of the device.v The beam has supported upon ita stud l Vwhose end 8 serves to the oscillatory movement for covering the entire cutting surface of the cutting plate should extend. through at least Fig. 2 shows in detail a simple method for ther obtainment of an oscillatory movement. The cut-4 ter I0 arranged on the inner side of the cutting plate 9 is actuated so as to oscillate by means of an arm I2 extending through an aperture Il. The arm I2 forms partof a lever I3 which is pivoted to the supporting member I6 by a small bolt I4 and a washer I5. The central part of the cutting plate is secured to the supporting member I6 by means of a screw Il and a re-entrant part I8 and is thus rmly supported in position. The lever I3 is actuated so as to oscillate by means of a slot-like aperture I9 and a stud 2|. mounted eccentrically on the rotary driving shaft 2B.
In addition, the cutter is centered on the reentrant part I8 of the cutting platel 9, the cutting plate and the supporting member I6 being jointly secured to the housing 23 by a nut 22.
As described hereinbefore, the cutting plate 9, the screw I'I, the supporting member I6 and also the screw I-I and the arm I3 jointly form a unitary piece in which a cutter` l0 and a small spring 24 are enclosed.
What we claim is:
1. Dry-shaving apparatus comprising an openended tubular portion, a plate-shaped frame member having an edge portion positioned over the opening of said tubular portion and having a central portion and being provided with an aperl ture intermediate said central and edge portions,
tions provided with a running surface, a cutter member interposed between said frame member and said cutting plate memberV and4 having teeth engaging the running surface of said,plate:n'i'enr-v ber, a single means to secure both the edge por# tion of said frame member and the edge' portion of said cutting plate member to said tubular portion, said cutter member having a= central opening, said cutting plate having a Vreentrant part extending through the central' opening: in said cutter member, means associated. with said reentrant part to rigidly secure and support the central portion of said cutting plate member on the central portion of said frame member, a rotatable driving member arranged within said tubular' portion, and an oscillating lever member pivotally' secured to said frame member and having a portion thereof eccentrically' engaging said driving member and another portion thereof ex tending through said aperture and engaging` said cutter member.
2. Dry-shaving apparatuscomprising an openended tubular portion, a plate-shaped frame member having' an edge' portion positioned over the opening of said tubular portion and having a central portion and beingv providedl with an apertureintermediate said central and edge por tions,` an annularv cutting plate member having an edge Vportion and a recessed central portion and having the inner portion thereof inter-mediate said edge portion and said central portion pro- 4 1 vided with a running surface, a rotatable cut ter member interposed between said frame member and said cutting plate member and engaging the running surface of said plate member, means to secure the edge portion of said frame member andthe edge portion. of said cutting plate member to said tubular member, means positioned within the central Vrecessed portion of said cutting `plate member to support said cutting plate member.V on said central portion of said frame member, a rotatable driving member centrally positioned Within said tubular portion, a spring Y member arranged about said central supporting means and interposed between said frame member/and-said cutter member, and a lever member havingan end thereof pivotally secured to said frame member, a central portion thereof eccentrically engaging said driving member, and an arm portion extending through said aperture and.. engaging said cutterA member.
