BOOKMARK Filed Aug. 9, 1951 IN VENTOR Lou 11-3 Gffldye r5 BYMQLM ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 9, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BOOKMARK Louis G. Meyers, New York, N. Y.
Application August 9, 1951, Serial No. 241,110 1 Claim. 01. 281-42) This invention relates to book marks.
An object of this invention is to provide a book mark which is adapted to be attached by means of a clip to an edge of the cover and which includes a spring-tensioned leaf holding lever adapted to engage a selected leaf or page.
Another object of this invention is to provide a book mark which includes a leaf or page holding lever and means for pivotally supporting and mounting the lever so that itmay be swung upwardly and away from the edges of the pages in order to permit free turning of the pages.
A further object of this invention is to provide a book mark which is simple in construction and can readily be made into an attractive article.
With the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawing and specification, and then more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
Figure l is a plan view of a book mark constructed according to an embodiment of this invention, showing the book mark in operative position,
Figure 2 is a detail end elevation of the device,
Figure 3 is an inner side elevation of the device,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1, V
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of. Figure 4.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral l0 desi nates generally a resilient clip formed of upper and lower plates II and I2 respectively, which are connected together by connecting member l3. The upper plate H is upwardly curved as indicated at M, at its inner edge, to facilitate the insertion of the clip about anedge of a book cover C. I
An obtusely inclined plate |5 of substantially disc-shape is struck from the upper clamping jaw or plate being inclined upwardly and outwardly, and plate [5 is connected with the plate II by means of a narrow connecting member l6. An elongated page holding lever I1 is formed with a cup-shaped housing H3 at its inner end, and housing |8 is pivotally secured to the plate l5 by means of a pivot I9.
The lever I1 is twisted slightly adjacent its outer free end, as indicated at 20, and a right angularly disposed page engaging member 2| is secured and extends from the outer end of lever H. A coil spring 22 is disposed in the housing l8 and has one end thereof secured as 2 at 23, to the plate IS. The other end of the spring 22 is secured as at 24, tothe housing l8. Spring 22 is adapted to constantly urge lever l1 downwardly to a page holding position.
A stop lug 25 extends from the upper outer edge of plate l5 and is positioned in the path of the upward and outward swinging of lever so as to limit the swinging of lever I1 to a page releasing position. 7
In the use and operation of this device the clip II] is extended over an edge of the book cover C, preferably the upper edge of the cover and in this position of clip Ill, plate IE will be inclined outwardly with respect to the adjacent or upper edge of the book cover; At this time page holding member 2| will be disposed over a page of the book so as to hold the page. If the device is used on the book while the pages are being turned, lever may be swung upwardly and outwardly on pivot I9, thereby swinging page holding member 2| outwardly and away from the adjacent edge of the book. Release of lever ll will permit spring 22 to swing lever |'I downwardly to a page holding position.
I do not mean to confine myself to the exact details of construction herein disclosed but claim all variations falling within the purview of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A book mark comprising a resilient clip, a circular plate struck from said clip and extending obtusely therefrom, a lever, a cup-shaped circular housing fixed to one end of said lever, means pivotally securing said housing to said plate, a
page holding member extending right angularly from the other end of said lever, a coil spring in said housing secured at one end to said housing and at the other end to said plate for constantly urging said lever downwardly to page holding position, and a stop lug struck from said clip integrally with said plate projecting over said housing for limiting the upward swinging of said lever.
