This invention relates to new and useful im provements in book holders and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a device for supporting a book,--maga zine or the'like in a vertically inclined position whereby the same may be observed in a convenient manner. t
Another important object of the present invention is to provide a book holder including a base, a book supporting frame pivotally mounted on said base, and embodying novel and improved means for retaining said frame relative to said base when'the former is in a raised orfolded position. 7 7 i A further object of the present inventionis to provide-a book holder including a base and a novel and improved spring urged pressure or clamping m erc op a ne With-sa d 'b se n o d r to support abook or thellkerelative thereto.-
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a book holderthat is extremely neat and attractive in appearance, strong and reliable in use, small and compact in structure, simple and practical in construction, relatively inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numeral refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the book holder constructed in accordance with the present invention, and showing the pivotal frame in a lowered and folded position;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the present invention in use and showing the pivotal frame in a raised position and supporting a book;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the present book holder;
Figure l is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 4-4 of Figure 3; and,
Figure 5 is a fragmentary group perspective view illustrating the manner in which the clamping member is applied to the base.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there i disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral Ill represents a substantially rectangular base member generally, of preferably plastic material having an enlarged lonthe b portion] 8'of the pressure plate 20.
erfllnis provided with a central arcuate recess '16 that receives the enlarged, arcuate portion l8 of a pressure plate or clampmg member 20. j 'j The undersurface of the'basemember i ll is provided with longitudinally spaced recesses 22 and 24 and the forwardly/ans 26 and '28 ofthe recesses 22 and 24 respctively,are provided with notches or recesses'3ll-and 32 that communicatewith longitudinal apertures orpin openings 3'4lwhich lead from therecess l6. f Headed fasteners or pivot-"pins 36 extend through apertures 34 and engage recesses .or sockets 38'formed in'the sides 40 of the enlarged The sides 140 of the portion l8 are provided with notchesf42 that receive coil' springs '44 having ,spaced andlangulatedend portions 46 and 48 which are receivedin openings 50 and 52, respectively,. formed in the portions 12 and l8 to normally urge the pressure-plate 20 against the sl pin surfabe LL z f "Dependingfrom the corners 54 of the base member ID are resilient feet or pads 56 that support the base member [0 in an elevated position above a supporting structural element.
The numeral 58 represents a substantially U- shaped wire frame member generally, the leg portions 60 of which terminat in substantially L- shaped projections 62 that are received in recesses 64 in the transverse sides of the base member 10. The free extremities of the projections 62 are yieldingly retained in suitable sockets 66 provided in the recesses 64 and the longer legs of the projections 62 bear against th lower walls 68 of the recesses 64 when the frame 58 is raised to a substantially vertical position as shown in Figure 2.
The central portion of the web 10 for the frame 58 is bent inwardly to provide a substantially V- shaped saddle for supporting a book 12, and when the frame 58 is moved to a folded or lowered position, the web 10 is received in a substantially V-shaped channel member or rib 14 integrally formed with the portion [8 of the pressure plate 20 (see Figure 1).
In view of the foregoing descriptiontaken in conjunction with the accompanyin drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A book holder comprising a base, a substantially U-shaped frame including a pair of spaced end portions and a web joining said end portions, the endportions or said frama termihating u-shapedinwardly extending proiections, the free extremities of said L-shaped projections being pivoted to said base and the 35 maining portions of said projections forming H bearing elements engaging said base for supporting said frame in a substantiallg vertical posts is,
