POWDER DISTRIBUTING DRUM Filed Aug. 17, 1948 Patented Sept. 2, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE POWDER DISTRIBUTING DRUM Northern Ireland Application August 17, 1948, Serial No. 44,648 In Great Britain December 17, 1947 2 Claims.
This invention relates to powder distributing drums and is directed more particularly to a cardboard carton of cylindrical form constructed for use as a means of distributing powder of a comparatively fine grade, the distribution of the powder being effected by manual pressure on the walls of the cylinder, the powder being ejected through One or more apertures at or near one end. In a distributor of this kind the cylinder tends to become permanently deformed during use, and the object of the invention is to overcome this disadvantage.
According to the invention, a powder distributor comprises a tubular body portion and circular ends, the tubular body portion having a plurality of ribs or indentations which assist in strengthening the body so that its shape is restored after temporary deformation.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of one form of powder distributor made according to this invention;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modification.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, a powder distributor comprises a cylindrical body portion 1 of cardboard, preferably of the kind known as chip board, and a metal closure cap 2 fitted to each end in the known manner. Prior to forming the tube, the blank is scored to pro vide two or more transverse indentations, which, when the blank is rolled into tubular form and joined in the usual manner by overlapping the free ends and securing them together by adhesive, form peripheral indentations 3 in the wall of the tube. A preferred number of such peripheral indentations would be three, as shown in Fig. l, and disposed midway between the ends of the tubular body and spaced in parallelism approximately to one inch apart. The indentations are Vs" wide and in depth. It has been found that three such indentations give the best results. The metal cap at one end has a central aperture 4 and is temporarily sealed with a piece of adhesive tape which is removed or punctured when it is desired to expel the powder contents of the distributor, or the metal disc may be provided with an indentation which can be easily pierced to form a perforation.
In an alternative embodiment of the invention, shown in Fig. 3, the cardboard blank is transversely scored to form three or more lines of indentations, five being shown, in the manner previously described and is laid upon a slightly smaller sheet of corrugated cardboard to act as an internal reinforcement 5 to the Walls of the drum when both layers are rolled together into tube form, or by inserting a cellulose acetate or other film substance tube for the same purpose, the meeting ends of the reinforcement abutting and those constituting the external wall overlapping, said overlapping portion being secured together by adhesive. Instead of the metal ends cardboard ends 6 are used in which case the ends of the outer wall are formed with an internally directed flange 1 which lies over the adjacent end of the corrugated internal reinforcement and forms a heading for retaining in position a cardboard end closure disc pressed into each end. In addition, an end cap of thinner cardboard or paper may be adhesively attached to either or both ends. The internal closure disc at one end is provided with a central aperture and the adhesively applied cap, when pierced centrally, will allow the powder contents to be expelled.
Various modifications in detail formation of the powder distributor may be made without departing from the essential feature of the invention which is, as hereinbefore stated, to provide a plurality of indentations or ribs in the body portion of the container to facilitate its resumption to normal shape after being temporarily deformed by hand pressure to expel the powder through the perforation by a bellows ac=- tion.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A powder distributor comprising a, tubular body and circular ends, the body having a portion intermediate said ends which is deformable to induce discharge of the distributors contents, and a plurality of circumferential indentations spaced apart from each other on said body and defining a cylindrical portion of the body, between such indentations, which is at least partly coincident with the said deformable portion.
2. A powder distributor according to claim 1 wherein the tubular body portion has at least three circumferential indentations to prevent permanent distortion of the body.
