Application August 14, 1950, Serial No. 179,281
UNITED STATES PATENT owin This invention relates to new and useful improvements in corner forming or finishing tools and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a device for smoothing a mastic or cement over a tape that is employed for joining a pair of intersecting or corner forming wall board sections of a building structure. 7
Another important object of the present invention is toprovide a corner forming tool including a V-shaped member of bendable material that is joined at its leading end by a V-shaped wiper or nose together with a means adjustably joining extensions of the side walls 'of the member whereby a predetermined thickness of mastic may be left adjacent the surface of the mastic contacted by the side walls.
'A further object of the present invention is the provision of a corner finishing tool of the aforementioned character wherein the V-shaped nose is reinforced and strengthenedby a sleeve or ferrule that also supports a handle whereby the tool may be manually pulled through a mastic or cement in a convenient manner. V
A still further aim of the present invention is to provide a corner finishing tool that is simple and practical in construction, strong and reliable in use, eificient and durable in operation, small and-compact in structure, inexpensive to manufacture, and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of the construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the present invention;
t Figure 3 is a top plan view of the present inven- Figure 4 is a, front elevational view of the present invention;
Figure 5 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken substantially on the plane of section line 5-5 of Figure 2;
Figure 6 is a horizontal sectional view of a corner having a tape applied thereto with cement over the tape and looking downwardly on the tool; and,
Figure 7 is a horizontal sectional view of a corner having a tape applied thereto and with ggnilent over the tape and looking upwardly at the 4 Claims. (Cl. 72136) Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration, there is disclosed a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the numeral I 0 represents an elongated substantially V-shaped member of bendable, preferably resilient, material including a pair of side walls I2 and I4 that are joined by a center bend l6. The member it] includes a leading end l8 and a trailing end 20.
The leading end of the member 10 is integrally formed with the side walls 22 and 24 of asub-j stantially V-shaped deflector nose or wiper ele ment 26. The walls 22 and 24 are inclined relative to the side walls 12 and I4, and the center bend or apex 28 of the nose 26 is'in'clin'ed relative to; the center bend it as shown best in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings.
A split sleeve or ferrules!) is rec'eived within the nose 26 and is fixed to' theinne'rsurfaces of the walls 22 and-24 by Welding or the like to reinforce and strengthen the nose 261" The sleeve'i-3l'l receives one end of a handle 32 that is held inthe sleeve by a fastener, rivet or the lilie 34.
A hand grip 36 is associated with the memberl0 andinclud'es a shank 38 that is rigidly secured The side walls 12 and I4 of the member 10: define a V that is progressively reduced in cross section from the leading end of member In toward I the trailing end of the member In and are integrally formed with outer wall sections or side members 40 and 42 that are inclined relative to the side walls I2 and I4, and which include trailing ends that are spaced closer together than their leading ends. The members 40 and 42 reinforce and strengthen the sidewalls l2 and I4, and include outwardly turned trailing flanges 44 and 46.
The rear end portions of the side members 40 and 42 support a rear pair of loops or eyes 48 that receive the eye ends 50 and 52 of a rear tumbuckle 54 whereas the forward end portions of the side members 40 and 42 support a rear pair of loops or eyes 56 that receive the eye ends 58 and El! of a rear turn-buckle 62.
The turn- buckles 54 and 62 are manually adjusted to move the side walls 44 and 46 toward or away from each other whereby the walls 44 and 46 will leave slightly more or less mastic on the walls than will the walls l2 and I4 when the tool is pulled downwardly through the mastic. The turn-buckles also constitute a means for The nose. 26 will. deflect the mastic-or cement toward the center bend l6 withthe side members 40 and 42 shielding a users hand and collecting the excess portion of the mastic or cement which" is readily scraped therefrom by a putty knife or the like. The flanges 44 and d act as retainers or confiners to aid in restricting the excess mastic or cement on the side members 48 and 42.
It is noted that the walls [2 and I4 slope toward integrally formed with the outer edges of the side walls and inclined relative to said side walls, a substantially V-shaped deflector having a pair of sloping walls joined with the side Walls of said member and having inner joined edges inclined relative to the joined inner edges of said side walls, and an adjustable connection between said elongated Wall sections for adjusting the same relative to each other and to the side walls.
, 2-A corner forming tool comprising an elonated substantially v-shaped member including a pair of sloping walls having inner joined edges defining a center bend, a substantially V-shaped I deflector nose joining the sloping walls at one of each other at their rear ends to form a progressively increased depth between the walls l2, l4 and the corner forming walls W of a structure. Thisfeature-is illustrated in Figures 6 and 7 wherein the forward ends of the walls I2, I4 contact the tapeT whereas the rear ends of the walls l2, M are spacedfrom the tape T so that as the tool is drawn through the mastic or cement, previously applied to the tape, a deposit of mastic or cement, approximately inch thick, will remain on the tape to allow for a slight shrinkage when the mastic or cement dries. This particular construction-is quite essential and permits the tool to functionin a highly eflicient and practical manner.
- In view-oi the'foregoing description taken in conjunctionwith the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art" A more detaileddescr-iption is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shownand described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certainchanges fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and-the scope of the-appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: v I
l. A cornerforming tool comprising an elongated substantially V-shaped member including a pair of sloping side walls having inner edges joined together, a pair of elongated wall sections their ends and having its apex inclined to the center bend, a reinforcing and strengthening member fixed in the apex of the deflector nose, a handle supported by said reinforcing and strengthening member, and means joining said pair of sloping walls and strengthening the corner tool.
3. A corner forming tool comprising an elongated substantially V-shaped member including a pair of sloping walls having inner joined ends defining a center bend, a substantially V-shaped deflector nose joining the sloping walls at one of their ends and having its apex inclined to the center bend, means fixed in the apex of said deflector nose reinforcing and strengthening the deflector nose, a handle supported by said means, a pair of side members integrally formed with said sloping walls,- and connectors between said side members reinforcing and strengthening said corner tool.
-i-.-The combination of claim 3 wherein said connectors include forward and rear parallel turn-buckles terminally attached to said side members.
