Patented Sept. 2, 1952 IRONER ROLL AND PAD WITH HEAT-RE FLECTING SHEET APPLIED THERETO Samuel A. Obitz, Pittsburgh, Pa., assignor to Pittsburgh Waterproof Company, Pittsburgh, Pa., a corporation of Pennsylvania Application March 20, 1948, Serial No. 16,018
3 Claims. 1
My invention relates to ironers, and more particularly to those of the mangle type wherein an ironer roll, covered by a pad, is employed in connection with a heated shoe or steam chest hav ing a concave ironing surface. In ironers of this type, heat from the shoe or chest is transmitted through the pad to the ironer roll, the pad, at the same time, becoming saturated and soggy from the steam given on" by the garments that are being pressed.
It is important that the pads not be permitted to become too wet, but this is difiicult to avoid because the ironing heat which would have a drying eiiect on the pad is, by the older types of ironers, conducted to a great extent into the metal ironer roll.
My invention has for its object the provision inum foil between the pad and the ironer roll.
Some of the ways in which my invention may be utilized are shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a schematic view of an ironer roll with a pad applied thereto and in operative relation to a shoe; Fig. 2 is a schematic view showing one manner in which the foil may be interposed between the ironer roll and a pad, and Fig. 3 shows another form of my invention wherein the foil is applied directly to that face of the pad which is closest tothe ironer roll.
A shoe 4 heated by gas or electricity, or in the form of a steam chest, and having the usual concave ironing sru'face may suitably be any one An ironer roll is indicated by the numeral 5. Heatrefiection that largely prevents absorption of heat into the ironer roll is provided by a bright finished metal sheet. 6 which may suitably be of aluminum foil. The sheet 6 is preferably backed by a reinforcing sheet '1 of craft paper or other fibrous material. The sheet 6 is coated on one face with a heat-resisting resin that will serve as an adhesive for holding the two sheets firmly together.
As shown in Fig. 2, there is a pad 8 of any conventional form having the usual lead cloth a which is adhesively connected at H) to the roll 5. The composite sheet -4 is placed on the lead cloth, and the cloth, together with its pad, then wrapped around the roll 5. The sheet 6 will reflect heat that would otherwise be conducted into the roll 5 from the pad 8, with the result that there will be a much greater amount of heat retained in the pad, and it will thereafter be maintained in a drier condition.
In Fig. 3, I show an arrangement wherein the foil sheet 6 is adhesively connected to the fibrous pad II. This pad may be of the carded bat type, and it will be retained in shape largely by its adherent connection to the sheet 6. The usual cover cloth will be provided for the pad when it is on the roll and it may also be provided with a lead cloth similar to the cloth 9.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with an ironer roll, of a lead cloth secured at one end to the roll, a com posite sheet of heat-reflecting imperforate metallic foil adherently connected to a non-metallic fibrous backing sheet and interposed between the lead cloth and the roll and completely encircling the roll, with the fibrous backing sheet in direct engagement with the roll, the lead cloth" being wrapped around the roll and serving to hold the sheet in wrapped position thereon, and a fibrous pad of a material that absorbs water vapor wrapped around the other wrappings.
2. The combination with an ironer roll, of a composite sheetcomprising heat-reflecting imperforate metallic foil adherently connected to a non-metallic fibrous backing sheet and both wrapped for a full turn around a roll, with the fibrous backing sheet in direct'engagement with the roll, and a fibrous pad of a material that absorbs water vapor surrounding the composite sheet.
3. The combination with an ironer roll, of a lead cloth secured at one end to the roll, an imperforate heat-reflecting metallic foil sheet completely encircling the roll, a non-metallic liner interposed between the sheet and the roll and completely encircling the roll, thelead cloth being wrapped around the sheet and serving to hold the liner and the sheet in wrapped position on the roll, and a fibrous pad of a material that absorbs water vapor wrapped around the lead cloth;
SAMUEL A. OBITZ.
