' ROME 600: FIG. 2
ATIMNEY parts which will PRESS PADS This invention relates to pressing pads for pressing machines or hand pressing irons or laundry machines such as mangles.
An object of this invention is to provide a highly improved article of the character described which comprises a layer of felted high heat-resistant fibers impregnated with high heat-resistant resilient material.
Another object of this invention is to provide an article of the character described in which the high heat-resistant impregnating material is silicone rubber or the like resilient, rubber material.
Still another object of this invention is to provide an improved article of the character described in which a loosely woven cloth of high heat-resistant fiber strands impregnated with high heat-resistant material, is attached to said impregnated, felted layer, in covering relation thereto, and a closely woven cover cloth of high heat-resistant material impregnated with high heat-resistant material overlies and covers the loosely woven cloth and is attached thereto and to said impregnated felted layer.
Another object of this invention is to provide a strong and durable press pad of the character described which shall be porous, resilient and which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture and which shall yet be practical, efficient and safe in use to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out. I
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of be exemplified on the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of the invention will be indicated in the following claims.
In the drawing:
FIG. 1 is a top view of a press pad embodying the invention for the buck or head of a pressing machine;
FIG. 2 is a crosssectional view taken on line 2-2 of FIG. 1, and
FIG. 3 is a bottom plan view of a press pad embodying the invention, for use in a hand iron.
Referring now in detail to the drawing, 10 designated a press pad embodying the invention. This press pad may have any suitable shape for use on the buck or head of a pressing machine as shown in FIG. 1, or for a laundry machine, such as a mangle, or it may be shaped as shown at 10A in FIG. 3, for use on a hand iron.
Said press pad 10 (or 10A) may comprise a padding layer 1 1 of felted high heat-resistant material such as Nomex (made by DuPont), or the like fibrous material. This layer 11 is impregnated with resilient high heat-resistant material. Said impregnating material may comprise silicone rubber, or Viton (made by DuPont) or other suitable synthetic high heat-resistant rubber material in order to make the layer resilient and resistant to high temperatures (up to 500 F The layer 11 is impregnated by passing the same through a bath of silicone rubber dissolved in Chlorothane NU or other solvent to thin down the silicone rubber. The bath may comprise 50 percent or somewhat less of silicone rubber and 50 percent or somewhat more of the solvent.
To obtain a porous layer 11, the felted padding payer is passed through the bath only once, and it is then cured under 300 F. to 500 F. for about 4 or 5 minutes.
If it is desired to have the layer 11 nonporous, the felted padding is run through the same bath a second time.
Machines for pressing collars and cuffs usually have a steel wool pad. If the press pad is to be applied to such a machine, the layer 11 is preferably nonporous to prevent rusting of the steel wool.
On a garment pressing machine where steam is used to press and to dry, steel wool is usually not used In such case a porous impregnated felted layer as described above, is used.
Heretofore, press pads of cloth impregnated with rubber silicone were not porous and required holes to be punched in them. These holes did not allow for even drying, and the holes sometimes showed up as impression on the garment itself. By using a felted padding of Nomex or the like, and impregnating with silicone rubber or Viton rubber, the pad can be made porous, thus obviating necessity for holes, and yet permitting even drying. Such pad furthermore will not cause impressions in the garment.
One surface of the layer 11 is covered by a layer 12 of loosely woven nylon, asbestos, fiberglass or other high heat-resistant cloth impregnated with Teflon, silicone or other high heat-resistant material. Layer 12 is stitched to padding layer 1 l by stitching 13.
A cover 14 of Nomex, nylon or polyester impregnated with Teflon, or other high heat-resistant material is stitched to layer 11 and 12 by said line of stitching 13.
The cover cloth 14 may extend beyond the peripheries of layers 11 and 12, as at 15, all around, and may be provided with a peripheral sleeve or tube 16 caused by folding back the cloth and stitching as at 17. A drawstring 18 in tube or sleeve 16, can be used to attach said pad to the buck or head of a pressing machine, or to a laundry machine.
Optionally, a layer 20 may cover the opposite surface of layer 11 and stitched thereto by said line of stitching 13. Layer 20 may comprise loosely woven nylon, asbestos, fiberglass or the like high heat-resistant material impregnated with high heat-resistant material such as Teflon. Layer 11 may be Vs inch to A inch in thickness.
In FIG. 3, press pad 10A may be constructed like pad 10 but will have the shape of a hand press iron as shown.
It will thus be seen that there is provided an article in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As possible embodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it is to be understood that all matter herein set forth or shown in the accompanying drawings, is to be interpreted as illustrative only.
