1 Claim. (01. s1 s.1)
This invention relates to bottle openers such as used for soft drinks and beer bottles and in particular includes a guard positioned over a bottle opener and having a sponge rubber block therein with a slot through which the neck of a bottle is extended when it is desired to remove a cap from the bottle.
The purpose of this invention is to provide means for arresting the leakage or small spray discharged from the upper edge of a bottle cap as the cap is removed from a bottle to eliminate the usual unsanitary condition around bottle openers.
To make bottle openers v sanitary box-like housings with openings for receiving necks of bottles have been provided around the openers but the spray discharged from the upper edge of a bottle cap as it is started away from the end of a bottle, whereby the pressure in the bottle is released, produces a sticky film around the opening in the casing so that unsanitary conditions continue to exist with the usual type of bottle openers. With this thought in mind this invention contemplates a comparatively soft washer mounted against the inner surface of the bottle neck receiving opening of a casing sur rounding a bottle opener wherein the neck of a bottle is inserted in a slot in the washer and with the Washer fitting snugly around the bottle neck the spray of fluid escaping around a bottle cap is deflected downwardly.
The object of this invention is, therefore, to provide means for mounting a spray arresting washer or block against the inner surface of a box like casing positioned over a bottle opener whereby it is necessary to insert the neck of the bottle in a slot therein in order to reach the bottle opener.
Another object of the invention is to provide a spray arresting device for bottle openers that may be installed on bottle openers now in use.
A further object of the invention is to provide a shield having a slot therein and means for mounting the shield in relation to a bottle opener so that the shield receives a small spray that may be discharged from a bottle when the crown or cap of the bottle is removed, which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects and advantages in view the invention embodies a block of soft resilient material having a slot extended upwardly therein from the lower end and means for mounting the block in a position spaced from a bottle opener whereby the neck of a bottle from which a cap or crown is being removed is inserted in the 'slotas thecap is pried therefrom. g
Other advantages of the invention'will appear from the following-"description taken 'in connec tion with the drawings-wherein:
Figure l is a front elevational view showing a block of resilient material secured by an outer frame on a casing which is positioned over a bottle opener.
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the casing and block of resilient material being taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail showing a blank from which the outer frame by which the block is secured to the face of the casing is formed.
Figure 4 is a detail showing an inner mounting element in the upper end of which'the block of resilient material is positioned and through which the block is mounted in the casing.
Figure 5 is a detail illustrating the block ofresilient material with a keyhole slot therein.
Referring now to the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts the sanitary device for bottle openers of this invention includes a block ID of sponge rubber or other comparatively soft resilient material, a mounting element II, and a frame l2. The block, mounting element and frame are mounted on an outer wall I3 of a boxlike casing l4 that may be positioned over a bottle opener,
which is indicated by the dot and dash lines [5.
In the design shown the block I0 is formed with an arcuate upper surface I6 and a flat base I1, and a keyhole slot having a cylindrical inner part I8 with an outwardly flared connectin channel I9 is positioned in the center of the block with the channel 19 opening through the base l1 and with the upper end thereof communicating with the slot 18. This block is formed of sponge rubber or other suitable resilient material, and in assembling the parts the block is inserted in a recess 20 in the inner section of the element II with the web or intermediate portion of the block extended inwardly as shown in Fig. l. The element Ii with the block l0 positioned in the recess 20 therein is secured against the inner surface of the front wall 13 of the casing M by prongs 2| that extend through slots 22 in the wall IS. The block and mounting element are secured in position by similar prongs 23 extended from the inner edge of the frame I2, and which extend through the material of the block and over the inner edge 3 neck of a bottle is inserted through the slot in the box like casing to reach the bottle opener I5 and with the neck of the bottle in this position the soft sponge rubber block closes the area over the neck of the bottle and arrests the spray discharged as the bottle crown or cap is started away from the end of the bottle. The block of resilient material may be removed and replaced as desired The size and shape of the block of resilient material and also the design of the surrounding housing may be modified as desired and it will be understood that other modifications may be made in the design and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit. of the invention.
What is claimed is:
The combination of a box like casing having a front wall and side and'end' walls'extended therefrom, and a bottle cap remover, with "a fluid deflecting shield, said casing positioned over the bottle capfremover. and having a centrally positioned elongated vertically disposed slot in the front wall, said slot being aligned with the bottle cap remover. whereby it is positioned to receive the neck of a bottle having a cap thereon a with the cap extended into said bottle cap remover, an elongated mounting element having a recess in the upper part thereof extended around the slot in the front wall of the casing and positioned against the inner surface of said front Wall, and a U-shaped block of resilient material extended over the upper end of said elongated slot in the front wall of the casing and positioned said recess of the mounting element, and means mounting said mounting element and fluid deflecting shield on the inner surface of the front wall of the casing with said shield positioned whereby fluid being sprayed outwardly'around a bottle cap positioned in the bottle cap remover is'deflected downwardly thereby.
