8 Claims.
This invention relates to a detachable anti- -slipping attachment for the soles of footwear such as shoes, boots or the like, and has for an object to provide an improved anti-slipping shoe attachment particularly intended for use on the footwear of persons who are climbing mountains or scaling heights, so that they may have a firm footing at all times, irrespective of the type of surface over which they are walking or climbing, and irrespective of the angle at which that surface may be.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved detachable anti-slipping attachment for footwear which is readily adjustable to fit various sizes of footwear but once it has been adjusted to a particular size, it may be readily attached to or detached from the footwear without the use of any tools whatsoever, and when attached, will remain firmly attached, irrespective of any strain that may be placed thereon by the wearer.
A further object of this invention is to provide a detachable anti-slipping attachment to be attached to the soles of footwear which includes a toggle locking means so that when the shoe is attached, the toggle provided by the locking means prevents any possibility of accidental release of the locking means and detachment of the anti-slipping attachment.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a detachable anti-slipping attachment for the soles of footwear wherein the anti-slipping means thereon extends from the toe'end area of the sole to somewhat beyond the ball of the foot end area of the sole. Means are provided for clamping this attachment to the sole which means is located at the toe end area of the sole and at the ball of the foot area of the sole as a result of which the foot and the footwear may flex about the ball of the foot away from the instep area, as it would naturally do when scaling a steep incline, yet leave the entire anti-slip area of the attachment in firm contact with the surface of the ground, ice, or rock over which the wearer is climbing.
A further object of this invention is to provide a detachable anti-slipping attachment for footwear which provides a ground gripping area under substantially the entire half-sole area of the footwear yet permits normal flexing of the footwear and normal walking operation of the foot.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide a clamping means including clamping lugs adjustably secured to different parts of the attachment so that the attachment may be fitted to any size of footwear within a wide range.
Still a further object of this invention is to provide an anti-slipping attachment for footwear wherein two plates are pivoted together at one end with their pivoting movement controlled by a toggle mechanism at the other end, one plate fitting smoothly against the sole of the footwear and the other plate having an antislipping means provided thereon, the pivotal movement of the plates toward the overlapping direction under the action of the toggle means serving to clamp the attachment to the footwear.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention comprises the, combination, construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, claimed and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

There is .shown at 10 the detachable antislipping attachment for shoes of this invention arranged to be detachably clamped to the sole H of a shoe I2. The attachment l0 consists of a top plate H which in shape and size is about the shape and size of a half-sole of a shoe, having a finger I5 extending toward the shank for cooperation with the operating means. As seen in Fig. 1, the attachment l0 including the top plate 14 is bent or curved upwardly at both ends corresponding to the normal longitudinal curvature of the sole H. A bottom plate I6 is provided likewise shaped like the half-sole of a shoe, but somewhat longer at the shank 'area at l1 to provide a portion cooperating with the clamp operating means.
The bottom plate I6 is provided with a plurality of rows of studs [8 here being shown as tongues struck out of the metal of the plate IE to extend in a downward direction therefrom. Obviously, any types of caulks' or studs may be provided integrally or detachably on this antislipping bottom plate 16. It will noted that the rows of studs I8 extend from under the toe end area at 20 to beyond the ball of the foot area at 2|.
Two transverse channels 22 and 23 are provided in the bottom plate 16, being integrally formed therein and extending downwardly therefrom of justsufficient depth to receive therein the securing arms 24 of the front sole clamping lug 25 and the rear sole clamping lug 26. Each of the arms 24. is provided with a plurality of threaded apertures 21 therethrough so asto receive the threaded shanks of the flat headed screws 28 therein, a pair of screws 28 being provided for each clamping lug 25 or 26. Two suitable apertures are 1 located adjacent one end or" each channel 22 and 23 for receivingfthe shanks of the screws 28 therethrough, and for convenience in manufacture, similar apertures may be placed at the opposite ends of the channels so that the blanks for forming the bottom plate may be stamped by the same die for the right as well as the left shoe before the plate has the channels or studs formed therein.
The top plate I4 has a pair of correspondingly located apertures therethrough, which when the plates I4 and I6 are in overlapped clamping position, will lie over the opposite ends of the channels Z2 and 23 from which the lugs are secured adjacent the .channel .ends. At this opposite end, similar lugs 25 and 26 are'secured by similar screws 28 through the suitably located apertures. The top plate I4 is provided with adepending or downwardly extending flange 3D integral therewith and located between the lugs 25 and 26.0 1 that side, and the bottom plate I is provided with an upstanding flan'ge 3| 'correspondinglylocated on its opposite edge likewise between its clamping lugs and 26.1. At thetoe end area of the plates I4 and I6, they are pivo'tally' secured together as by a rivet 3 I. Atthe'other end, an operating lever 32 having an operating handle 33 at one end thereof, is pivoted by means of a rivet '34 to the shank area-I1 of the anti-slipping bottom plate I6 on its upper surface. Inasmuch as the top plate I4 is likewise pivoted at 3| to the bottom plate. I6, it is apparent that the lever 32 will move substantially in the plane 01" the top plate I4. A linking lever 35 shaped substantially as shown is pivoted atone end 35 to the projecting finger I5 of the top plate I4, it being noted that this finger I5 is curved slightly upwardly at 3'! from the plane of the plateI-t to thereby provide space between the overlapped plates for the pivoting end of lever 35. The other end of lever 35 is bent or shaped. at 38 so as to raise its other end 40 above the plane of the operating leveri32 and permit it to be pivoted thereto by means of a rivet 4I',.and to lap thereover in operation. I
It will be noted that this entire operating mechanism consisting of the operating lever 32 and link lever 35v extends over the shank area I? of the bottom anti-slipping plate I6 and the upturned handle 33 may fit along the edge'of the sole II when in closed position.
In operation, the screws-28 may be removed a suitable screw driver to adjust the clamping lugs 25 and 25 to the proper size to fit the particular shoe I2 on which it is to be worn, a left foot attachment being shown in the drawing, and a right foot attachment would obviously be a mirror image of that herein shown. Then when the clamping lugs are fitted to the right size, to attach the attachment in operative position on the sole of the footwear,-it is merely placed under the sole and the operating lever handle 33 is moved from the position shown in Fig. 3 in: a clock-wise position as w'ewed in Fig. 3 to l the position shown in Fig. 2. As the operating lever 32 is moved about its pivot 34, it'pulls' the linlc lever 35 causing the upper plate 'I'4*'and antislipping bottom plate IB'to pivot about their pivot 3| to the overlapped position with"thje flang'e at one edge of each plate broughtinto abuttment with the adjacent edge of" the other 'plate' "At the same time, the line between the centers of the pivots 35 and 4| moves slightly beyond the center of the pivot 34 just as the handle 33 approachesand abuts a flat edge 42 of the top plate Mas shown in Fig. 2, thus.providing a toggle affect, and thus locking the attachment in the clamped position, for obviously any tendency of the plates I4 and It to move away from each other about their pivot 3| would then cause the operating lever 32 to press more tightly against the flat edge 42 of the plate 4I, thus making it impossible for accidenta1 separation to take place, thus keeping the attachment firmly clamped to the shoe sole.
To release the attachment when it is no longer needed on the shoe sole, th wearer may grasp the upstandin handle end 33 of the operating lever 32 and move it in the opposite direction away from the fiat edge 42 about its pivot 34, thus overcoming the toggle aifect and then moving the plates I4 and I3 to partially separated position, thus releasing the clamping lugs 25 and 26 from engagement with the edges of the shoe sole II.
The'term shoe as used throughout this specification and claims is to be interpretedas meaning any type of footwear having a sole to which this attachment is capable of being clamped.
While the device has been shown and the structure described in detail, itis obvious that this invention is not to be considered as being limited to the exact form disclosed, and that changes in detail and construction may be made therein within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of this invention.
Having thus set forth and disclosed the nature of this invention, what is claimed is:
1. A detachable anti-slipping attachment for shoes comprising a half-sole-shaped top plate, a similar but longer anti-slipping bottom plate, pivot means at the toe end area securing said plates together, a pair of front shoe clamping lugs and a pair of rear shoe clamping lugs, .one. lug of each pair being adjustably secured to said bottom plate, the other lug of each pair being adjustably secured to the bottom of said top plate and toggle link means for pivoting said plates to shoe clamping section.
2. A detachable anti-slipping attachment for shoes comprising a half-sole-shaped top plate, a similar but longer anti-slipping bottom plate, pivot means at the toe end area securing said plates together, an upstanding flange on one side edge of said bottom plate and a similar depending flange on the opposite side edge of said top plate limiting the relative pivoting of said plates to overlapping position inone direction, a pair of front shoe clamping lugs and a pair of rear shoe clamping lugs, one lug of each pair being adjustably secured to said bottom plate, the other lug of each pair being adjustably secured to .the bottom of said top plate and toggle link means for pivoting said plates to shoe clamping position.
3, A detachable anti-slipping attachment for shoes comprising a half-sole-shapedtop plate, a similar but longer anti-slippingbottom plate, a pair of transverse channels depressed in said bottom plate, one channel extending under the toe area, the other channel extending under the'ballof-the-foot area, means at the toe end area securing said plates together for pivotal movement, a pair of front shoe clamping lugs and a'pair of rear shoe clamping lugs, one lug of each pair being adjustably secured to, said-bottom plate and located one in each transverse channel adjacent the same ends thereof, the other log .of
each pair being adjustably secured to, thebottom of said top plate adjacent theopp'osite ends of said transverse channels, and toggle link means for pivoting said plates to shoe clamping position.
4. A detachable anti-slipping attachment for shoes comprising a half-sole-shaped top plate, a similar but longer anti-slipping bottom plate, a pair of transverse channels depressed in said bottom plate, one channel extending under the toe area, the other channel extending under the ball-of-the-foot area, means at the toe end area securing said plates together for pivotal movement, an upstanding flange on one side edge of said bottom plate and a similar depending flange onthe opposite side edge of said top plate limiting the relative pivoting of said plates, a pair of front shoe clamping lugs and a pair of rear shoe clamping lugs, one lug .of each pair being adjustably secured to said bottom plate and located one in each transverse channel adjacent the same ends thereof, the other lug of each pair being adjustably secured to the bottom of said top plate adjacent the opposite ends of said transverse channels, and toggle link means for pivoting said plates to shoe clamping position.
5. A detachable anti-slipping attachment for shoes comprising a half-sole-shaped top plate, a similar but longer anti-slipping bottom plate, a pair of transverse channels depressed in said bottom plate, one channel extending under the toe area, the other channel extending under the ball-of-the-foot area, means at the toe end area securing said plates together for pivotal movement, an upstanding flange on one side edge of said bottom plate and a similar depending flange on the opposite side edge of said top plate limiting the relative pivoting of said plates, a pair of front shoe clamping lugs and a pair of rear shoe clamping lugs, one lug of each pair being adjustably secured to said bottom plate and located one in each transverse channel adjacent the same ends thereof, the other lug of each pair being adjustably secured to the bottom of said top plate adjacent the opposite ends of said transverse channels, and toggle link means for pivoting said plates to shoe clamping position, comprising an operating lever pivoted to said bottom plate beyond said top plate and movable in the plane of said top plate, a link lever pivoted at one end to said top plate on the bottom thereof and at its other end to said operating lever and bent to move over said operating lever, the line of centers of said link lever pivots crossing the center of said operating lever pivot as said plates are pivoted to shoe clamping position, the free end of said operating lever abutting an edge of said top plate in shoe clamping position.
6. A detachable anti-slipping attachment for shoes comprising a half-sole-shaped top plate, a similar but longer bottom plate, a plurality of anti-slipping studs providing an anti-slipping surface on the bottom of said bottom plate, a pair of transverse channels depressed in said bottom plate, one channel extending under the toe area, the other channel extending under the ball-of-the-foot area, means at the toe end area securing said plates together for pivotal movement, depending flange on the opposite side edge of said top plate limiting the relative pivoting of said plates to overlapping position in one direction, a pair of front shoe clamping lugs and a pair of rear shoe clamping lugs, one lug of each pair being adjustably secured to said bottom plate and located one in each transverse channel adjacent-the same end thereof, the other lug of each pair being adjustably secured to the bottom of said top plate adjacent the opposite end of said transverse channels, and toggle link means for pivoting said plates to shoe clamping position.
7.'A detachable anti-slipping attachment for shoes comprising a half-sole-shaped top plate, a similar but longer bottom plate, a plurality of anti-slipping studs providing an anti-slipping surface on the bottom of said bottom plate, said studs being tongues integrally struck out from said bottom plate and arranged in rows extending transversely of said bottom plate, said rows being located from the toe end area to beyond the ball-of-the-foot area, a pair of transverse channels depressed in said bottom plate, one channel extending under the toe area, the other channel extending under the ball-of-the-foot area, means at the toe end area securing said.

8. A detachable anti-slipping attachment for shoes comprising a half-sole-shaped top plate, a similar but longer bottom plate, a plurality of anti-slipping studs providing an anti-slipping surface on the bottom of said bottom plate, said studs being tongues integrally struck out from said bottom plate and arranged in rows extending transversely of said bottom plate, said rows being located from the toe end area to beyond the ball-of-the-foot area, a pair of transverse channels depressed in said bottom plate, one channel extending under the toe area, the other channel extending under the ball-of-the-foot area, means at the toe end area securing said plates together for pivotal movement, an upstanding flange on one side edge of said bottom plate and a similar depending flange on the 0pposite side edge of said top plate limiting the relative pivoting of said plates to overlapping position in one direction, a pair of front shoe clamping lugs and a pair of rear shoe clamping lugs, one lug of each pair being adjustably secured to said bottom plate and located one in each transverse channel adjacent the same ends thereof, the other lug of each pair being adjustably secured to the bottom of said top plate adjacent the opposite ends of said transverse channels, and toggle link means for pivoting said plates to shoe clamping position, comprising an operating lever pivoted to said bottom plate beyond said top plate and movable in the plane of said top plate, a link lever pivoted at one end to said top plate on the bottom thereof and at its other end to said operating lever and bent to move over said operating lever, the line of centers of said link lever pivots crossing the center of said operating leverpivot as said plates are pivoted to shoe clamping position, the free end of said operating lever abutting an edge of said top plate in shoe clamping position.
