Description

26, 1952 2. ISRAEL SCRIBING ASSEMBLY Filed Feb. 9, 1951 INVENTORI fm a HIS ATTY'S Patented Aug. 26, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SCRIBING ASSEMBLY ZisujIsrael, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada Application February 9, 1951,, Serial No. 210,195
3 Claims. l
invention relates to new and useful improvements in scribing assemblies, more particularly to scribing assemblies used in conjunction with either a conventional straight-edge rule or a set square, an object of my invention being to provide adevice of the character herewithin described whereby a line or mark may be inscribed upon paper, wood, or thelike, with the rule or square "in position thereby eliminating the necessity for using a, separate vpencilgor scribing implement.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described. in which the scribing assembly can be rotated clear of the edge of. the rule or square thereby enabling the latter tobe used inthe conventional way.
Another object of 'my invention is 'to *provid a .device of the character .herewithin described which includes means for maintaining the scribingassembly parallel with the edges ,of said rule or square during the operation thereof.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin described which includes an indicating marker projecting rearwardly from the scribing assembly, which marker indicates,,by means of a conventional measuring indicia engraved upon the rule or square surface, the exactpos'itionor-distance that the scribing point, has travelled thereby permitting a line of a given length to be scribed.
Still another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character herewithin :described which includes an actuating finger grip positioned upon the scribing assembly so that twisting or 'canting of said assembly is eliminated.
A still further 'object of my invention is to provide a device of the 'characterherewithin described which iseconomical in manufacture, simple in operation, and otherwise, well suited for the purpose for which it is designed.
With the foregoing objects in view, and such other objects and advantages as will become apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates as this specification proceeds, my invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts all as hereinafter more particularly described, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsinwhich':
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view-of a straight-edge :with 'one "embodiment of "my device in situ thereupon.
Figure 2 is a perspectiveview 10f -a.rset square situ thereupon.
with an alternative embodiment of jmy. device a scribing device incorporated therein in order to facilitate the scribing .of lines uponsuch material as paper, wood, or the like. The rnajority of these previous devices sufferiromseveral disadvantages the most important of Whichi that, once incorporated, they interfere withthe normal use of the straight-edge or set square.
Furthermore, the prior devices, do not include efiicient means for varyingthepressure upon the scribing point neither do they incorporate efficient sliding actions which will permit ready movement of the scribing assembly along the straight-edge orse'tsquare ,yetat the same time prevent undesirable cantin in relation to the sliding surface with the subsequent jamming of the scribing device occurr ng.
My invention overcomes these disadvantages as well as providing a scribing assembly which is adapted for vuse upon either a conventional straight-edge or arset square commonly gusedin woodworking and the like. I Proceeding, therefore, todescribe my invention in detail, ;it will jbe seen upon reference .to V the accompanying drawings that I have ill strated :in Figure '1 a str i 1.0 having a front edge H upon which may be engraved suitable measuring indicia as indicated at '12. The rear edge L3, also engraved with indicia 12" corresponding exactly with the indicia {2 upon the forward edge thereof, isalso provided with an outstanding portion 14 hearing three recessed apertures l5 within which the finger tips of the operator maybe placed in order to steady the straight-edge during operation ofrmy scribing assembly. v V Q lMy scribing assembly orjblock, collectively designated it includes a base portion-H and :a hinged portion [8. The base portion 1 comprises a substantially g-rectangular plate i 9 having a pair of lugs 20 upstanding from the upper surface thereof between which is pivoted *for limited vertical rotation, the aforementioned hinged portion 18, by means of pin'2-l.
The scribing block 46 'is adapted to slide longitudinally along the upper surface 22 of the straight-edge re, means being provided upon said upper surface .to maintain saidnscribin'g block in position and in parallel relationship with the edges H and [3 of the straightedg'e. "Themeans mentioned mortise groove 26 but without any ap preciable side play therebetween. Further lateral stability is given to the base portion IT by the incorporation thereupon of a down-turned lip 28] situated upon the rear edge of the plate and slidably bearable against the outer edge 29 of the a aforementioned strip 23.
The hinged portion I8 also comprises a substantially rectangular plate hinged between lugs 29 as hereinbefore described and being provided with a double-stepped under surface 30 also to provide'lateral stabilityto the scribing block. The double-stepped under surface includes an upper step 3| which rests upon (when in the position' shown in Figure '1) the uppersurface 32 of the aforementioned strip 24. The vertical wall of the lowerstep 33 slidably bears against the outer edge 34 of the other strip'24 thereby complementing the action of the downturned lip 28 as here'- inbefore described.
A'scribing p'ointi35i's situated upon' the front end 35 of thefhirigjediportion and extends downwardly therethrou'gh'and is adapted to lie adjacent the edge ll'of the'straight-edge, projecting slightly below the under surface of the straight-edge sothat it will engage the surface upon which the straight-edge is resting. This scribing point may either take the form of a sharpened steel pin (for use upon wood or metal) or a lead pencil 'point which may be grasped in a conventional chuck (not illustrated).
A finger grip 31 projects upwardly from the upper surface of the hinged portion l8 to permit sliding movement of V the scribing block along thestraight-edge, thi'sgrip .being positioned so that it may control the pressure of the scribing point as well as eliminating any canting of the scribing block Within the mortiseslot 26. In operation,'the straight-edge is positioned upon the work to be inscribed whereupon the finger tips are placed within the apertures [5 thus holding the straight-edge securely in position. The hinged portion [8 of the scribing block is then raised and the scribing block slid along the mortise groove 26 to the position at which the scribed line is to be commenced whereupon the hinged portion is lowered to the position shown in Figure 1. a
The scribing block is then moved along the straight-edge by means of the actuating finger grip 31, downward pressure being applied to the hinged portion so that the scribing point marks the material upon which the straight-edgeis being used. In order to facilitate the accurate measurement of the line being scribed, I have pro vided an indicating marker 38 extending rearwardly from the down-turned lip 28 and bearing upon the indicia scale I2 provided upon the rear edge of the straight-edge. As this scale corresponds to the front scale [2, and as the scribing point is in transverse alignment with the indicating marker 38, the indicating marker allows the operatorto inscribe a line or mark of a predetermined length.
Proceeding now to describe the alternative embodiment illustrated in Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have shown a conventional set square 39, having a stock 40 and a straight-edge 4| situated at right angles thereto.
The straight-edge 4| is provided with a scale 42 upon the front edge 43 thereof and a corresponding scale 44 upon therear edge '45 thereof in a similar manner to the straight-edge hereinbefore described in the previous embodiment.
My scribing assembly or block collectively designated 45 in this embodiment, also includes a base portion 41 and a hinged portion 48 pivotally secured'for limited vertical rotation between lugs li] upstanding from a. substantially rectangular plate 50 from which the aforementioned base port-ion 41 is formed. A tenon 5| is provided upon the under surface of plate 50 slideably engageable within a mortise groovev 52 formed within the straight-edge 42 of the square, it being understood thatthe dimensionsof the tenon and mortise groove are such as to permit easy sliding movement without undesirable sideplay existing.
The hinged portion'48 comprises a substantially rectangular plate hingedas aforesaid and is provided with a pair of scribing points 53 extending downwardly therefromTadjacent the front edge :33 of the straight-edge in a similar manner to the scribing point 35 hereinbefore described.
A finger grip 54 upstands from the hinged portion and enablestheoperator to slide'the scribing assembly. alon -the straight-edge and to enable the operator to supply sufficient pressure to the scribing 'po'ints' 53 to'cause them to inscribe a line on the surface of the work upon which the set square is being used.
The operation or this embodiment is similar to that hereinbefore described but it will be noted that, when utilizedwith 'a set square, the two scribing points 53 provided permit the inscribed line to commence substantially adjacent the butt end 55 of the square, an important consideration when the device is being used in wood or metal working, An indicating marker 56 is also provided extending from "the rear edge of the base portion 55 which acts in 'asimi'lar manner to the marker 38 hereinbeforeidesc'ribed. I
' In conclusion, it willfbe, 'een that'I have provided stops 5'! at the extremities. of the straightedge in order to prevent undesirable displacement of the scribing block th'erefrom.
Since various modifications can be made in my invention as hereina bove described, and many apparently widely different embodiments of same made within the spirit and scope of the claims without departing from such spirit and scope, it is intended that allmattercontained in the accompanying specificationshall beinterpreted as illustrative. only andnot in ;a limiting sense.
