, character.
In ordinary well-type pump construction no .provision is made for the dispensing of drinking of ,water, other than the attachment of a drinking cup to the pump. Obviously, this presents .unsanitary conditions, since the cup is detrimental elements which may be and still worse the one'cup is used by a multitude of persons and such condition fosters the spreading of communicable diseases.
" My invention provides an efiicient and economically produced drinking fountain which may be used with a well-type water pump to avoid the disadvantages above mentioned, and to provide other sanitary features consistent with good drinking fountain manufacture. My invention has great application in areas where the only supply of water is from wells, and as examples,
my invention may be used on farms, golf courses, and in rural districts.
Referring to the drawing which accompanies this specification and forms part of this application, there is shown, for purposes of illustration an embodiment which my invention may ,,assume,.and in this drawing:
Eigurel is a broken elevational view showing m invention as applied to a \ve11-type water pump,
I ,Eigure 2V is, an enlarged longitudinal section ofaportion ,oflthe apparatus shown in Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section corresponding 33 of Figure 2, with Referring particularly to Figure 1 of the drawing,.,the. apparatus herein shown to disclose the invention comprises a well-type pump it! having apump cylinder 1! disposed in the water of the-:well-W. A tube l2 has fluid communication with the pump cylinder l I and extends upwardly through the ground G and is-threaded into the ,lower end of areceptacle I3, as shown at H .;(-see Figures 2 and 3).
.A reciprocable pump rod I5 is adapted to op-' 1 eratethe piston means in the cylinder H in the ,usual manner, and this rod extends upwardly ;in spaced relation through the tube 12 and the receptacle l3, and hasconnection with a pump- ,handle 16. Thus, operation of the pump handle IS in the usual manner will cause reciprocation of the rod l5 and-effect pumping action ofjthe piston'means in the cylinder H, so that water is drawn upwardly in the tube 12 and delivered 5 to the receptacle l3. Water rises in the receptacle 113 until it reaches the level of the'lip H of the outlet spout l8, whereupondt-flows outwardly of such spout. The entire apparatus may be held imposition by a flange ill-which 1 is slidable along the tube l2 and is "bolted-{to this tube in position to engage the upper surface of the ground G, or the adjacent surface of a concrete apron which is sometimes provided in thearea surrounding the pump.
My invention provides a drinking fountain which is automatically operable when water is delivered to the receptacle I3, water b'ei'ngdelivered for drinking purposes when a certain level is reached in' the receptacle, and'flow of 20 water continues ire-substantially uniform stream until the water in the receptacle drops to a certain lower level, whereupon the stream'is generally abruptly interrupted. I
Asbest seen in'Figures 2 and 3, the receptacle -j'i3 hasan "interior boss formed at itslower end. The boss has a bore 2| which isthrea'ded at'its lower end to receive a bolt 22 which closes the lowerend' of the bore "2|, Sand 'also'forms means-for the attachment of a bowlorcatch basin- 23. *The bowl '23 has a drain passage .24
' directed inthe same "general direction as'w the may also collect waste; water "irom-ithe'outlet rspout'ili.
Intersecting i the *bore 2 I, 'is a; 'thre'aded open- .ingifiil'ltUWhlCh is threaded a'water'dispensing -;=nozzle,:- such' asthe water "bubbler 21 herein mi-shown. The. bubblerffl': hasahood 2a to protect fthe -outlet :nozzle' rfrom accumulation i of r dirt and other deleterious matter.
Secured: within'the upper endof the bore, 2| '(see'Figure? 3) is 'oneileg '29 of a siphon tube -38; the bightof the "tube being disposed below the: levelof the lipl'iof .the outlet-spout I8 and merging with a downwardly extending deg SL-"lhe 1 leg titer-minates within :a bore .40 .formedina-valve,--body--4l, the lower-end of the bore .40 communicating with the interior of the receptacle I3 ataupointspaced from the bottom thereof. As will be. clearly seen in Figure 3, the -siphontube 8 establishes a line of water communication between the interior of. .the .re- .oeptacle .l 3.,a1'1dthe bubbler. 21, andsuchline [of communication is formed with an opening to the atmosphere at its lowermost portion to provide escape for trapped air and a drain for water. In the embodiment shown, such escape opening is formed in the bubbler 21. as shown at 32, so that Water may drain into the bowl 23.
The valve body 4| has a bore 42 intersecting the bore 40 and accommodating a valve plug 43 of the rotatable type. The plug 43 has a diametrically disposed aperture, so that passage of fluid through the bore 40 may be blocked at will. A nut 44 holds the valve body 4! in position with respect to the receptacle l3 and also clamps a dial plate 45 against the exterior surface of the receptacle. A valve rod 46 extends from the valve plug 43 and a pointer and operating handle 41 is connected to the exterior extremity of this rod. Suitable packing pre vents leakage of fluid along the valve rod 45. The dial plate 45 is provided with spaced projections 48 and 49 which limit movement of the pointer 41 between the two positions of the valve plug 43. If desired, the plate 45 may be provided with'the legend Drink adjacent to the projection 48 to indicate that the valve is open and that water will issue from the nozzle 21, and may also be provided with the legend Pump" adjacent to the projection 49 to indicate that the valve is closed and only the spout [8 will issue water.
In operation, assuming the valve plug 43 is in Drink" position, as water is pumped into the rece tacle I3. the level of water will rise not only in the rece tacle but also in the leg 3|. When the level of water in the receptacle reaches the bi ht' portion of the si hon tube an, water will flow from the leg 3|, through the bight portion, down ardlv throu h the leg 29 and out ardl of the bubbler 21 in a stream as shown by the dotted lines S. The siphon action will thus be started,
' and water will continue to flow from the bubbler 21 until the level of the water in the receptac e I3 drops to uncover the lower end of the bore 40 which in effect is the lower end of the siphontube leg 3|.
Continued pum ing durin the time the water is flowin from the bubbler 2 will cause the level of the water to r se a ove the biaht ortion of the siphon tube 3" so t at water will flow from the out et s out ill in the e ent it is desired tocollect water in a pail or the li e. Anv air in the siph n tu e i -ea' ilv vented th ou h the o enin 32. so that the flow of water from the bubb er is free of am; s u ts which otherwise may be cau ed b tr p ed air.

Thus, when the ap aratus is not in use, a l ater is automaticall drained therefromv and therefor no water remains in the apparatus and. the po si i it of d mage done by freezin water is ent rely eliminated.
It will be noted that the lower end of the bore 40 is some distance above the outlet end of the bubbler 21, so that a suitable head of water is provided even when the level of the water approaches the lower end of the bore 40. This is desirable since it provides a stream of drinking water of sufficient heighth at all times so that the unsanitary danger present in contact of the users mouth with the nozzle is avoided. Further, when the water level drops to uncover the lower end of the bore, the stream from the bubbler is interrupted abruptly, thus preventing the unsanitary danger involved in following a dwindling stream to th nozzle.
It has been found desirable to provide a valve for controlling flow of water through the siphon tube to further enhance the sanitary features of the drinking fountain. Without the valve, when a person is pumping water for disposal from the spout l8, the tendency is to cover the outlet of bubbler 28 with a finger, or otherwise close this outlet, and obviously this presents unsanitary conditions. The valve herein shown is located in full view of a person operating the pump handle l6, and it is an easy matter to turn the valve to desired position.
In View of the foregoing, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that I have accomplished at least the principal object of my invention, and. it also will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the embodiment herein described may be variously changed and modified, without departing from the spirit of the invention, and that the invention is capable of uses and has advantages not herein specifically described, hence it will be appreciated that the herein disclosed embodiment is illustrative only, and that my invention is not limited thereto.
I claim:
1. For use with a water pump having a receptacle into which water is pumped, said receptacle having an outlet opening and an outlet spout, a water drinking fountain comprising a siphon tube establishing fluid communication between the interior of said receptacle and said outlet opening, whereby fluid pumped into said receptacle flows through said siphon tube for drinking purposes and also through said outlet spout, and valve means for controlling fluid-flow through said siphon tube so that fluid-flow through said siphon tube may be interrupted when it is desired to dispense fluid through said outlet spout.
2. For use with a well-type water pump having a receptacle into which water is pumped and from which water is delivered through a spout opening, a water drinking fountain comprising a Water dispensing nozzle carried by the lower end of said receptacle, a bent tube within said receptacle and providing siphon means, one leg of said tube being in communication with said nozzle and the other leg of said tube terminating an appreciable distance from the bottom of said receptacle so that a head of water is at all times maintained within said receptacle, valve means carried by a side wall of said receptacle and having a valve body disposed inwardly of said receptacle and having a port connected to the terminating end of said other leg and another port communicating directly with the interior of said receptacle, a valve plug movable Within said valve body and operable to interrupt flow of water through said other leg and thus control operation of said siphon means, manually operable handle means connected to said valve plug and disposed exteriorly of said receptacle, the bight of said tube being disposed an appreciable distance above the lower end of said other leg so that an additional head of water equal to the height of said bight above the terminating end of said other tube is required in said receptacle to start siphoning action of water from said receptacle to said nozzle, whereupon water issues in a substantially steady stream from said nozzle when said valve means permits flow of water through said siphon means and at a substantially uniform height and flow of water is interrupted abruptly when the level of the head of water uncovers said valve means so as to stop water flow before the stream of water appreciably diminishes in height.
3. For use with a well-type water pump having a receptacle into which water is pumped and from which water is delivered through a spout opening, a water drinking fountain comprising a water dispensing nozzle disposed exteriorly of said receptacle, a bent tube within said receptacle and providing siphon means, one leg of said tube being in communication with said nozzle and the other leg of said tube opening into said receptacle at a point spaced from the bottom thereof, the bight of said tube being disposed on a level substantially equal to the level of said spout opening so that water issuing from said spout provides visual indication to an operator thatsuflieient water is in said receptacle for proper siphoning action.
