of the strap 34 will actto space the dosed end section 32 away from the arm I2 and thus draw the cleaning element away from the opposing cleaning element 16,: When in use upon a windpw pane, as will be described in more detail hereinafter, the position of the parts illustrated in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2 will occur, thus bringing the two cleaning elements into substantially juxtaposed relation.
" The metal strap 34, in combination with the closed end section 32 and the arm I2, forma handlewhich is grasped by the hand of the op-' erator; When'the handle is tightly gripped or squeezed, the'intermediate portion of the strap 34 and the arm I2 are moved toward one another againstthe yielding resistance of the projecting end sections 36-36 and assume the position shown in'Figs. '1 and 2. As a result of this squeezing action; the cleaning element 20 is moved by member'24 toward the opposite cleaning element I6. In use, the U-shaped structure formed by arms I0 and I2 and the closed end I4 thereof is mounted in a window opening so that the arms overlap upon opposite sides of a window sash indicated at 40'; The wiping'elements are brought into position on oppositesides of the 7 window pane'42 and when the handle is tightly gripped'by' theoperatorythe cleaning elements I6 and 20 will :be compressed into engagement with the opposite surfaces of the window pane, The dotted outline of the device Fig. l illustrates an initialposition of the parts prior to the squeezing operation. Thereafter, upon squeezing'oif the handwhich grasps the handle, the framemember 24 will be moved'inwardly toward the window pane and into engagement therewith;
In the operating position, it is desirable to lock the cleaning elementsjn engagement with the window pane. For, this' purpose, there provided a releasabl locking detent comprising a plate member 44 which hinged 'at 46-tothe edge of; one of the side sections of the member 24.-- The plate 44 is provided with two downwardly turned flanges 48 and 50 which, when .thedetent is swung to the position indicated-in Fig; 2, will. overlap upon the strap.34,and the s1} spring is" illustrated 'as being in thefform its extremities respectively bearing against the adjacent side of the member 24 and against the dowpane, the detent may be allowed to return to its locking position, holding these elements in close engagement with the pane.
Fig. 3 illustrates a modification of the invention wherein there is substituted for the cleaning elements I6 and 20, wiper blades 55 and 58. These blades are preferably formed of resilient material, such as rubber, and are mounted respectively upon base members fifl and 62", which inturn, are'secured to the inner faces of the arms Ill and I2. Theuse of the device of Fig. 3 is similar to the embodimentof the invention previously described; i
