Referring to the drawings, the numeral I designates a jointer stand and Z the jointer frame. The jointer frame 2 is provided with the rear stationary bed plate 3 and the forward bed plate 4, which bed plate A is adjustable upwardly and downwardly in relation to the bed plate 3. - Pivotally connected at I 8 to the upper side of the supporting-plate B is an arm I9, extending overthe' member I l and connected to the flange I3 bya link 25!, therefore the operator can adjust the device upwardly or downwardly-to the proper elevation according to the scale 2| carried by the flange l2 and the stationary pointer 22 carried by the supporting plate 8.
In applying the device to the fence, the bed plate 4 is adjusted downwardly as shown in Figure 5, preferably one half inch, and it will be seen that the lower edge of the supporting plate 8 has one portion thereof downwardly offset as shown in Figures 2 and 5 to rest on both bed plates. Secured by means of a bolt 23 to the upper side of the adjustable bed plate 4 is a multiple fingered pressure member 24, the ends of the fingers of which are bent downwardly at ninety degrees as shown at 25. The other edge of the member 241s provided with 2. lug 26 received in the notch 21 in the lower edge of the supporting plate 8, hence it will be seen that the member 24 can not pivotally move, and these parts, as well as all of the attachments it continues to the left through the machine.
It will be seen that successive pieces of material can be accurately planed to a predetermined dimension. It will also be seen that by simply loosening the locking screw iB-the'operator can easily and quickly adjust the device for planing to a different size.
From the above it will be seen that athickness planer attachment is provided which may be easily and quickly attached to a conventional form of j ointer fence and jointer without modifying the construction of the fence or jointer.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. The combination with a jointer, said jointer having a stationary bed plate and an upwardly and downwardly adjustable bed plate adjustable into and out of the plane of the stationary bed plate, a rotatable cutter between said bed plates, a fence extending upwardly from the sides of the bed plates, of a thickness gauge carried by said fence, means for adjusting said guage upwardly and downwardly in relation to the bed plates, said thickness gauge comprising a supporting plate secured to the inner side of the fence, a thickness guage vertically adjustable on the supporting plate and material engaging spring means carried by the adjustable bed plate and adapted to engage the under side of material passing through to maintain the upper side of the material in close engagement with the under side of the thickness guage.
2. The combination with a jointer, said jointer having a stationary bed plate and an upwardly and downwardly adjustable bed plate adjustable into and out of the plane of the stationary bed plate, a. rotatable cutter between said bed plates, a fence extending upwardly from the sides of the bed plates, of a thickness guage carried by said fence, means for adjusting said guage upwardly and downwardly in relation to the bed plates, said thickness guage comprising a plate secured to the inner side of the fence and extending upwardly above the fence, a horizontal guage member carried by the plate, said horizontal guage member having a slidable connection with the supporting plate, lever means for raising and lowering said horizontal guage member, cooperating scale and pointer members carried by the supporting plate and the guage member, upwardly inclined spring fingers carried by the movable bed plate and extending inwardly towards the cutter, said spring fingers forming means for engaging the under side of material passing through the device and maintaining the upper side of the material passing through the device in sliding engagement with the under side of the gauge member.
.3. The combination with a jointer, said jointer having a stationary bed plate and an upwardly and downwardly adjustable bed plate adjustable into and out of the plane of the stationary bed plate, a rotatable cutter between said bed plates, a fence extending upwardly from the sides of the bed plates, of a thickness guage carried by said fence, means for adjusting said guage upwardly and downwardly in relation to the bed plates, said thickness guage comprising a supporting plate carried by the fence, the movable bed plate being below the elevation of the stationary bed plate, a supporting plate attached to the fence, a vertically adjustable guage member carried by the supporting plate, the bottom edge of said supporting plate engaging both the stationary and adjustable bed plates, inwardly and upwardly inclined spring fingers carried by the adjustable bed plate, a bolt extending through the outer side of the spring fingers and into the adjustable bed plate, a lug carried by the other side of the spring fingers and disposed in a notch in the lower edge of the supporting plate carried by the fence.
