This invention relates to fastener forming and inserting machines of the type in which fasteners are formed from a continuous length of wire or the like and inserted in material to be secured. This is a division of our copending application Serial No. 722,824, filed September 8, 1947, and issued as U. S. Letters Patent No. 2,565,104, on August 28, 1951.
The machine of the present invention is particularly adapted for soling shoes, and has features in common with the machine disclosed in the copending application of Wright et al., Ser. No. 595,766, filed May 25, 1945, and issued as U. S. Letters Patent No. 2,520,521, on August 29, 1950. A in the case'of the above copending application, the present machine may also be modified for use in woodworking operations, and differs over the machine disclosed in the prior application in the incorporation of improved operating elements which provide substantial structural and 1 operating advantages as described more in detail below.
The present invention is illustrated, with particular reference to the above mentioned improved features, in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation, partly cut away, of a fastener forming and inserting machine constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a corresponding side elevation;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of the guide means provided for positioning material to be secured in relation to the machine of the present invention;
Fig. 4 is a plan detail, mainly in section, illustrating the arrangement of the extending guide arm of the guide means shown in Fig. 3:
Fig. 5 is a corresponding detail showing the adjusting elements of the guide means positioned for varying the disposition of the extending guide arm;
Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional detail showing further the arrangement of the adjusting elements for the extending guide arm; and
Fig. 7 is a sectional detail taken substantially on the line L4 in Fig. 6.
Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing, the fastener forming and inserting machine shown comprises a suitable frame structure MG made up of a vertically ext-ending base portion IDI adapted to support the machine on a floor or similar surface, and an upper frame section ID2- carried at the upper extending end of the base portion lili. The upper frame section 102 is arranged to support an operating head I03 andan associated plunger mechanism Hi4 adapted for cyclic actuationof a knife assembly, indicated generally at 680,,for fastener forming and fastener'inserting operations as described in our above noted copending application Serial No.
The plunger mechanism Hi l comprises a plunger I05 carried in a crossarm I08 which is mounted to extend from an operating rod Ill! supported forreciprocating movement by the upper frame section IDZ/ The operating rod .107 extends downwardly to the base portion I0l for associationwith a connecting arm I68 whichis actuated from a crank mechanism at [09 driven by a motor unit It. The motor unit I It] may be equipped for operation with; conventionalelectrical connections (not shown) arranged through a conveniently disposed switch box as at Ill. A clutch mechanism H2 is interposed between the motor unit I10 and the crank mechanism I09, and is arranged for actuation fromalfoot-pedal il3.- This arrangement-is suchthat depression of the foot pedal 1 IB resuIts-in actuation of the clutch mechanism H2 to connect the motor unit H0 for driving the crank mechanism 109 with consequent reciprocation of theoperating rod IE1 through connecting arm 103. A motor unit and related operating elements of the type just described above are also incorporated'in the fastener forming and inserting machine disclosed in the above identified copending application Serial No. 595,776, andreferenoe is made to that application for furtherdetails.
The upper frame section HiZ also supportg a wire'mounting reel H4 from which'wire- H5 for forming fasteners is trained through a tubular guide i 16 to the operating head Hi3, and a lever arm assembly 50!! arranged for actuation by the lunger mechanism 104 for feeding the wire H5 from reel l M to the operating head I83. In addition, the upper frame structure )2 supports a guide means 800 for positioning material to be secured in relation to said machine, as described further below; and a work support I H such as is disclosed in our above identified copending application Serial No. 595,776.
The guide means 809, which is illustrated in detail in Figs. 3 to 6 of the drawing is of the same general type as disclosed in the above copending application, and in United States Patent 2,315,382, issued March 30, 1943, to Ajouelo et al. but incorporates an improved arrangement for adjustment of the guide means.
As described in the above noted prior application and patent, the guide means 800 comprises a bracket member 80l pivotably mounted on the upper frame structure I02 and adapted to assume several positions for guiding material on the worksupport l-l-l inrelation to the operating head 103; or" swing to a retracted position when not in use. The bracket member 80l which is adapted for functioning in this man-- ner in accordance with the previous disclosures, is further arranged to carry an extending guidearm 802 for sliding movement in. association with means for adjusting the extending: disposition of the guide arm 802 andlocking it"in place when adjusted. The guide arm 882? is formedwith beveled edges 803 to fitcorrespondingiy un dercut grooves 804 in the bracket membenafl which accommodate the guide arm 8021101: slid ing movement on the bracket member 80l. We claim:
1. In a fastener forming and inserting machine adapted for forming fasteners from a continuous length of wire and inserting said fasteners. in material; to be secured, a guide means for positioning said material to be secured coma bracket member mounted on said machine; an extending guide arm carried for sliding movement by said bracket member, said guide' arm: being, formed with a toothed portion in the: nature of. a rack, a shaft member carried by said. bracket member for sliding movement transversely with respect to said guide arm, said shaft member having a toothed portion forming a pinion disposed-for engagement with the rack portion of said guide arm; apawl member yieldingly positioned on said bracket member for normally locking said pinion against rotation where by said guide arm may be maintained at a fixed extending position, and a cam element carried on said shaft member for displacement of said pawl member upon sliding movement of said shaft member whereby said pinion may be released for rotation to adjust the extending position of said guide arm.
2. A guide means for positioning work material ina; fastener forming and inserting machine, said guide means comprising an extending guide arm'slidingly mounted on said machine for adjustnient of its extending disposition, an adjusting shaft member mounted on said machine for rotation and for sliding movement transversely with respect to said guide arm, said shaft member being connected in geared relation with said guide arm, yieldable means carried on said machine for normally locking said shaft member against rotation, and cam means carried by said shaft member for displacing said yieldable looking means upon sliding movement of said shaft member to allow adjustment of the extending disposition of said guide arm by rotation of said shaft member.
